I love Norman Lindsay, one of my absolute favorites. There's a funny story about how, when he was working from his home in Australia, so many of his nude female figures had the same distinctive look because living out in the middle of nowhere as he did, he only had one woman willing to model for him! He kept her in steady work, though!
Hello and I think that was his second wife, Rose. There's a fetching photo of her in her undergarments next to Norman, who looks pleased with himself,on google. The dreadful film 'Sirens' depicted him as having a gaggle of lovelies at his disposal, but that's Hollywood for you.

@@petebeard I am an illustrator, who up till recently had a really limited concept of the time period you are talking about and only ever scratched the surface with artists like Aibrey Beardley, Charles Gibson and Maxfield Parish. I have been digging and wowing at some of the amazing work I am seeing. You are doing a great work. Its appreciated.

Norman Lindsey was so versatile. His pen & ink was beyond strong. Also his positioning of characters with flow & energy to his line work. Another new Illustrator to investigate. Thanks Pete👍

A couple of notes on Lindsay. I first discovered him around 1976 when some of his work (including, I think the crucified Venus) was part of a show at the university art museum. His novel "Age of Consent" was made into a movie in 1969 by Michael Powell (director of The Red Shoes etc.) and it starred the young Helen Mirren (24 playing 16, I think), who was spectacular (James Mason played her lover). Lindsay himself was played by Sam Neill in the 1994 film Sirens, in which Lindsay's studio, with a seraglio of models, is invaded by a young preacher (Hugh Grant) and his vaguely unhappy wife (Tara Fitzgerald). Both movies focus on the female characters and have, I think, quite wonderful nude scenes.
Every video expands our image of history through satire. One observation that becomes increasingly clear is the domination of 'exotic desirable ladies and horny men'. Thanks for your work and research.

So much treasure! At the start I thought Sullivant has a bit of a Magic Pudding thing going on and then. lo and behold, here's Norman Lindsay. The Magic Pudding is the match for and the beating of any Lewis Carroll and though I came to it late in life (at fifty odd) I love it deeply. It was published here as a hardback by NYRB in 2004 and book search companies can usually find it if you don't do s/h book shops.

It would seem that like me your tastes in illustration are wide-ranging. From Baumer to Lada is a fairly large stylistic leap, and one it's pleasing to know you appreciate. Regarding Lada I have no proof but I suspect that he just wasn't very good as a draughtsman. I hasten to add I dont think that matters at all and I would take work such as his over any number of American realists every time. And yes - Phil May of the Pretty Things, along with Dick Taylor and I can't remember the names of the other members. The first crappy band I was in used to play Rosalyn and Don't Bring Me Down constantly - and badly.
@@petebeard Playing things badly is the secret to later playing them well. Hahahaha I couldn't agree more about Lada - not about his quality as a draughtsman but the perfection of his illustrations, particularly in the Svejk context. Art, painting and drawing, is like music, in that you can fall in love with something without even really knowing why sometimes. I love Peake because I loved the Gormenghast books first and then realised I preferred him to Tenniel in Lewis Carroll. Lindsay was similar in arriving as a Magic Pudding package. Baumer I took to for lots of reasons but partly because the illustrations in early Just William books had such perfectly delineated flappers ( like Robert Brown's girlfriends or incidental characters) with long necks and sleek Louise Brooks type bobbed hair and perfect calves drawn with two swift lines........ Anyway! some of Baumer's stuff reminds me of that kind of stuff. I have an old friend who hates Norman Rockwell and though we haven't talked about it in depth I suspect it is at least partly because she was lured to the States into a marriage that has since had huge problems and she has lived through the Trump descent into chicanery, 'Karenism' and hatred and she has learnt to hate America and hates Rockwell as being representative of that. I suppose I might have overthought it and she literally just hates Rockwell but that seem so unlikely I can't bring myself to believe it. Hahahahahaha

Hi there and thanks for liking. My knowledge of comic book artists is pretty patchy so I tend to steer clear. But I suppose it depends n who you mean. If it's the modern stuff the creators usually fall outside the years I've set myself as parameters for the unsung heroes (born 1850-1910). Frank Miller and Bernie Wrightson are about the only ones I'm familiar with. But if you sling me a few names maybe I can put a piece together...

Certainly nothing came up in my various searches but that of course means nothing, and it's more than possible he did.
I love the work of Lindsay, but it's hard to find a book of his art that's affordable. Age of Consent was made into a film in 1969 starring James Mason as the Lindsay surrogate and a young Helen Mirren as his nude model. A more specific movie that romanticized Lindsay's hedonistic lifestyle was 1994's Sirens with Sam Neill playing Lindsay himself. I don't remember much about the latter, except for a lot of beautiful women in pastoral settings.

Interesting that Lindsay's estate keeps a tight control on release of his work in book form, what they do deign to release are way too expensive unless you're a collector/enthusiast with deep pockets. Thank goodness the internet provides a bit of a workaround! His masterful technique and enormous output is fantastic!

There are numerous reprints of ''Lysistrata'' that are only a few dollars and well worth the money. I had a copy and also a copy by Picasso, his contribution to the Illustrated Editions collection (Heritage).
Hello and most of them can be found with a google image search. A few tips though - also try the same search with duckduckgo and you'll get some google dont necessarily show. And you can usually find more by putting in titles of books or magazines they have worked for. But don't expect too much - Pepin is particualrly hard to find stuff by unfortunately.

Yes the Freudian element of his work really resonates. The diverse nature of illustration and its uses never ceases to amaze me.
