    Yeah, this is definitely the Hollywood version of something like Zone of Interest.

    So something I've heard is that a ton of the people in Germany had no idea what was actually happening in the concertation camps. A) it was because the camps for the average citizen that wasnt military had no clue it was a thing and b) for the family of people who were in the military were told like the propaganda film shows and the soldiers who were in the camps etc were forced to secrecy. This is why after WW2 the allies forced German citizens to see the concertation camps after the war and many Germans were aghast at what had happened.

      yeah I've heard that and that makes sense. Specifically the wife living next to Auschwitz not realizing what it happening is what I don't believe.

    When I was seven, there was a girl not allowed to play with me because of Psoriasis. We lived next door to each other, a wooden fence had kept us separate, we could not see each other's faces. We would spend almost every day talking with each other.

    • @CA-vy8et
      @CA-vy8et 2 дня назад

      Was she not allowed to play with you because your parents thought it was contagious? I have psoriasis, as a kid I got bullied a lot because of it and a lot of parents didn’t want their kids around me because they thought I had some contagious disease.

      I think her parents thought I was contagious. I was bullied, too.
      Every time I moved to another apartment complex, I had to have a doctors note to attend school and use the swimming pool.
      When I was fifteen, I was accused of having AIDS. (In the mid to late 1980s)
      Our health teacher/couch listed the symptoms. The color of my psoriasis spots were dark pink.
      I had psoriasis spots on my back, I wasn't allowed to change clothes in the bathroom stall. It was embarrassing to change into my gym clothes in front of my classmates.

    Great video, and refreshing. I like that you touched on the cheapness/cheesiness of trying to make the mom more likable, when it's highly unlikely that she wouldn't have supported her husband in his role. I've seen the movie, but had no plans to read the book....this may have changed my mind. :) Have you considered branching out to review movies on their own? I would have liked to hear your take on 'Jojo Rabbit' (I saw that movie twice, and LOVED it. It was so quirky and full of heart, without getting into sappy/cheesy territory, as so many Holocaust films do.)

    • @WhytheBookWins
      @WhytheBookWins  8 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks! And Jojo Rabbit is based on a book as well! Another one I keep wanting to cover, but I already know the gist of the book and I think that has kept me from actually reading it. (the book is much darker than the movie)

      @@WhytheBookWins Oh cool! I had no idea. "The Reader" would be a good one to cover too, keeping in with the Holocaust theme.

    When I saw the film for the first time a few months ago, I was SHOCKED. It made me sad, yet mad, but also I understand why the ending happened the way it was. It was from the lens of Bruno who was naive and they really did a good job of presenting that in the film!

    I know it's fiction but the historical inaccuracies are a little frustrating. It's also kinda strange hearing them with British accents when they're meant to be Germans.

    I like the mother not liking her daughter being so pro-nazi in the movie even when her husband is one of them. Actually, that was my favorite part of the movie when I watched it today! It shows how little the atrocities of the war affected her when she was far from the camps, but now that she has to smell the bodies burning and see how people are treated *in person,* it's a different thing. It goes to show how hypocrite people can be when they know about war crimes, but just choose to ignore them since they don't affect their daily lives (when she was in Berlin).
    Also, the feminist message in the movie is strong, and I really really liked it! Great video!

      @@WhytheBookWinsit seems you're assuming she has a modern "love marriage". I think you have to consider marriages in the historical context. Wealthy marriages have traditionally been arranged. She may have felt she had no other option than to keep quiet about her feelings. Just as the boy had to lie, it does seem believable that she may have just played along to avoid dying.

    I read a lot of holocaust fictional and non-fictional books before reading and watching this text, so I was actually disappointed a little, especially as I had heard that it was supposed to be a really moving story from others. I think the ending was still quite powerful though, and of course very saddening.

    In the book the father tells Gretel and Bruno that they'll be returning back to Berlin.
    but in the movie the father tells them they're going to be moving Gretel said where at home? Ralph said No, not Berlin not yet instead they'll be moving to Aunt Lotti at Heidelberg. Bruno is against the idea of moving out, he plead his dad too let me stay but his dad said No! This home not safe here for kids of your age!? Ralph will be staying here working.

      @@WhytheBookWins You are wrong about it being unlikely the wife would not be a Nazi like her husband. They got married 10-12 years before the war and although Hitler may have come to power, there was no talk at the time of extermination camps. The Nazis tried to hide what they were doing, it is likely the commandant tried to hide the full extent of what he was doing from his wife. You also didn't mention a few significant things. 1. the young Nazi officer murdered him because he spilled some wine. 2. When it was found out that his father fled to Switzerland to get away from the Nazis, he was sent to the Russian front where it was likely he would be killed. Other things as well.

    The Boy in the Striped Pajamas movie is basically a "Mom, can we have The Zone Of Interest?"
    "We have "The Zone Of Interest at home"
    Zone of interest at home
