    My interpretation of the movie is that we experience humanity through the eyes of an alien. Everything looks familiar, but also detached. Like the scenes in which she's walking through Scotland and she just observes the people and their lives. I think in the movie, the aliens ate the meat or used it as some sort of liquid. I also thought they used the skin as hides or covers. The baby scene at the beach to me is a reflection of nature and how uncaring it is. The waves didn't help the baby, nor the rocks. It made me recall how brutal and indifferent nature truly is. The cake scene was my favourite, because it looked like some sort of weird, delightful, odd element that the Alien Creature tried to enjoy, but she couldn't because she has no digestive system and I guess it's like eating couch foam to us. The alien tries to become human, but this leaves it open to be attacked by humans.

    I watched it yesterday and these where things that I did not like, but I really also did like the fact that it was clear that she felt really guilty abut the affair and really tried to restore the relationship with her man (to her capacity). So much more realistic and female friendly then other movies. Many critics online say that the movie justifies cheating as a woman, but to me the movie did not do this at all! As a Dutch women I am proud of 'our' Haline Reijn!

      Thanks for commenting! And yeah, she clearly loved Jacob and wanted to keep her family and I loved how we see them deal with this. To say it is a movie that condones cheating is selling it short. This is the first Reijn movie I've seen but now I want to watch the rest of her movies!

    The Blu-Ray of the 1979 version (which is the first Dracula film I ever saw) has both the theatrical version (with the full colour palette) and the Director's Cut (with the muted colours). The 1977 version is actually my favourite version. It does lag in places, but that's because it's following the book quite closely.

  • @TorontoJediMaster
    @TorontoJediMaster 12 часов назад

    @24:41, one positive thing about the 1992 version was that it explained Renfield's insanity and connection to Dracula, as well as giving a nod to the 1931 version. It's mentioned early on that Renfield was a partner at the law firm Harker works for. He, apparently, had gone to Transylvania to meet Dracula and (either there or after returning) cracked up and was put into Seward's asylum. Thus, Harker (the junior most solicitor at the firm) is sent in Renfield's place.

    There is so much to discuss and appreciate about this movie- you're right, the marketing made it look more like a slightly-more-sophisticated '50 Shades of Grey' than the unpredictable social commentary that it was. That amazingly awkward hotel scene where they're both trying to figure out their roles was....something else. I wonder if Romy's psychological desires are in any way rooted to her having been raised in a cult (since cults are all about control- or it could be because of shame around sexuality in general). I also liked Kidman's line about resenting her husband for not knowing who she really was. Recovering from being a people-pleaser is a lifelong process- unlike in the movies, it's something that you have to keep reminding yourself to do until it becomes second nature. Speaking of which... I might be alone in this, but I found Esme's speech at the end really off-putting. It kind of sounded like straight blackmail, and that Esme was blaming Romy for the entire affair (again, coming back to that trope of the woman always being the one to get punished for having an affair). She implied that she had lost respect for Romy because of the affair, but would continue to keep up appearances as long as she got what she wanted. The part about "creating more opportunities for women" in the company didn't make much sense, since there didn't appear to be a power gap between women and men at that company at all (or if there was, maybe I was too dense to see it). I 100% agree that the score/soundtrack was absolute fire. The use of breathing that sounded kind of like throat-singing in tension building scenes was fantastic- as was the "Father Figure" scene! (I'd also be curious to get your take on the Milk Scene!)

    • @WhytheBookWins
      @WhytheBookWins 2 часа назад

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I thought Esme's speech was a wake up call for Romy but I see what you're saying and how she almost blackmails her. But she did keep saying they would talk about Esme's future but with Romy being obsessed with Samuel she kept putting it off. And it does seem like most other ceo's were men and we have the image with her in the elevator with just a bunch of men. And the milk scene seems to be an example of their back and forth power dynamic? He "tells" her to drink the milk, but rather than shy away she downs the whole thing. Only to then be told good girl which seems condescending. I'm glad you liked the movie!

    • @AndrewandShelbyNagy
      @AndrewandShelbyNagy Час назад

      @WhytheBookWins I want to see it again, haha! My husband hated it, unfortunately 😆 Though he had his own interpretation of the Milk Scene- that it was Samuel essentially telling her to go to bed, since he chastised her for drinking too much coffee. That's a good point, there were still more men in executive positions within the company, although she was CEO. There are few fan theories about the movie that I've heard- one is that Samuel's character represents AI (with his ability to sense what people want/need, and to fulfill it), and that Jacob represents a real person- someone imperfect, but who is capable of creating a real human connection.

It's hard to overstate how radical those moments are in a mainstream movie starring an A-list actress. @gigi-ij1hk 14 часов назад

      Well, not really. Incels assert that ALL women want to be dominated, or that they SHOULD be dominated whether they like it or not. The film is only interested in what Romy wants and does not in any way suggest that her desires are universal among straight women. Ironically, part of what's keeping Romy from being honest with Jacob is the shame she feels for wanting something that seems degrading or retrograde. A previous generation might have been ashamed of wanting sex at all, while Romy and Jacob's generation has decreed that sex is good, but only if it falls within certain parameters.

    I actually read the book very long ago back in High school and when I was obsessed with the musical. Let me tell you, the book is a lot darker and more political compared to the musical. In the same way Notre Dame Des Paris by Victor Hugo is also different from the Disney movie (prejudice and separation of church and state), this book really has a lot of differences than musical. Some have complained that it does contain R-rated sex scenes but a majority of the book talks loads of things about racism, fighting for equality, fraudulent politics and how gaslighting the public into thinking one group is an “enemy to the people” damages both the individual and everyone’s connection in the process. It really should be studied in schools in the same way all the other classic books have in English Literature class.

Even Spielberg said he had to re-imagine the humans when they were making the film, because all the people in the book were just awful. The one thing the book was able to give was the sharks perspective, which was an interesting point. The shark wasn't evil, it was just being a shark.

    These are facts, look them up: By 1830, there were 3,775 black slaveholders in the South who owned a total of 12,760 slaves. Half of the black slaveholders lived in cities with most living in New Orleans and Charleston South Carolina. In particular, New Orleans had a large, relatively wealthy free black population. So saying that Louis couldn't be a plantation owner at this time is factually and historically incorrect, They could have very well set this show in the proper time.

    Totally agree with you. I do think that the ending of the book regarding Will's family is sad, but also more true to life as this job would take a large toll on his relationship with his family. Completely agreed with the casting of Manhunter - except Philip Seymour Hoffman, who made you strongly dislike him and yet feel like no one deserves what Dollarhyde did to him.

    I absolutely adore and am obsessed with the TV adaptation. It’s brilliant!!!!!! I don’t want the book regurgitated on screen- I want something new and incentive- and this show does that beautifully.

    Interesting take on the characters but I have a different take as a Gay man who was married to a woman for 19 years before coming out. I related to Lee because there were stark similarities between our lives, except for the drug addiction. I came out in 99’ and involved myself in the sub-cultures of the gay community, or leather community, mainstream gay and the drinking culture. As a newbie, I quickly realized that some younger gay guys were looking for sugar daddies, while some bi-guys had girlfriends, had sex with men too but were in it for the financial aspect of befriending a gay man but never really into loving one. Neither type wanted a committed, younger/older relationships that actually exist for love and companionship. I pegged Allerton as bi guy with a girlfriend. While Allerton may have been physically attracted to Lee, he couldn’t love Lee and have a relationship with him. As for Lee, I related to how his addiction to alcohol distorted his reality. I went into AA at 58 and have been sober since but I’m not sure Lee ever kicked his habit. I didn’t make excuses for his behaviors or actions but saw him as a lonely and troubled man who used alcohol and drugs to escape reality. Yet, I saw both Allerton and Lee as lonely and troubled men who needed to take control-but one representing the younger version and the other the older version of the same person. Addiction = a need to control things according to AA and therapists. My takeaway is I see the snake as addiction and the scene of Lee & Allerton becoming one (after taking the root mixture) as a metaphor that they representd one person and not 2 separate characters.

    I agree with everything but have to disagree with Johnson's performance was very good.

    My favorite line in the book reads 'We were more at home in dreams than with wives.' This, to me, the point of the story, the eternal struggle for youth.

    The nameless thing in the attic that is in the book , the people that did the film did a good job to make this nameless thing the fusion between the mother and Jack (very disturbing but it's lovecraft ) and I think they tried to translate how the two talk at each other between the walls (to if here, they talk to each other but very differently how they do not super good sounds that can be a sort of translation of the demonic language). For me , the scene the most disturbing of the film was the fusion between the mother and the son. After this fusion, all the strange other animals are still strange and gross but the most impactful of them all is the spider Mother/Jack monster

    Welcome to the world of Micheal Mann. He is an amazing director. That cast was perfect. William Petersen is good in everything he does.

    Paraphrase “My father wove a tapestry of obscenities and curse words that as far as we know are still hanging over Lake Michigan” 😂 I love that movie! I’m a POC and the parents in the movie reminded me of my paternal grandparents. My grandmother was a stay at home wife. She was so sweet but firm and my grandfather worked as a military contractor. He thought he was the boss but we all knew the truth. They were joined at the hip. When he died, she followed him 9 months later. The official cause of her death was cancer, but we all know it was from a broken heart.

    The painting of the "The Thing" movie poster, and all the other paintings, are by movie poster and book cover artist Drew Struzan, it was a nod to him, not The Thing. The painting David is working on in the movie is the cover for Stephen King's book Dark Tower.
