I used to LOVE going to the bike show at the NEC. Haven’t been for many years now. Too expensive to: get in, eat, buy anything……there was a time where these shows were a place to pick up real bargains - not anymore. I’d rather save the £100+ it would cost me and spend it at the local bike shop…
If I hadn’t been a complete biker since 1975, I’d have stopped buying anything motor biking years ago…… greedy corporate bastards one and all…..

Oh Dick, I thought your title was directly, personally, addressed to me! And the answer would be “yes”. Frankly a cheek to ask so much money to come and look at what firms are trying to make me buy. Or would be, if I hadn’t already put myself beyond their clutches by doing up a couple of old models they stopped making years ago! Keep the wheels going round Mate, and ignore the ‘market’. Les

Earlier in the year i got rid of my Tiger 850 to take the cash out of the bike. I purchased a brand new Royal Enfield Scam 411 to bimble around the lanes of north wales where I live too! This bike was less than half the price of a new Tiger but it still puts a massive smile on my face! Cheap, simple, fun! Surely that’s what many motorcycle manufacturers have lost sight of with the ever growing sales targets and constant need to push new trends onto consumers. I don’t need 101 rider modes or features to enjoy being out on a bike, maybe I’m getting old!

I went to MCL as a group in a coach from Thunder Road Cwmbran for £40 all in and they did a great job. I took sandwiches and a drink and quite enjoyed it as it was pretty quiet. Hel and Airvest spent time with me to talk and i bought a vest and brake lines, so I am happy with the visit.

I had a good day at the NEC having pre booked my ticket and parking for £23 and £10 respectively. My friend and I went to the National Motorcycle Museum the day before the show and both of us got in for £7.50 instead of £15 because we wer NEC show goers.
I do agree with a lot of your observations particularly the price hikes. I think that the attitude of most producers of motorcycles and everything else is that the public are expecting prices to go up so lets put our prices u[p as well. It's all down to inflation you know! The only way to reverse this trend is to stop buying the product, and if we all convey to dealers that we are sorry but this is too much then they mignt reduce prices. After all from the manufacturers point of view why sell for 8k whien people are willing ot pay 10k for it.
There were very few new new bikes at the show as most have just had cosmetic changes for 2024. The 1300 GS is a new bike as is the 450 Himmey which is worlds apart from the outgoing model. There are 2 little new Triumph's the new BSA and a raft of 350 Enfeilds. The golden generation of motorcyclists is aging, a few of my friends having bought big retro bikes to relive their youth are now looking at these new singles as they are smaller and lighter.
I am lucky enough to have several motorcycles one of which is a BMW Funduro which is also a single cyulinder machine and capable of knocking the spots of most of these new offerings. I do however like the new Himmey.

Harley never bothers. The big trick about the show is that it isn't the manufacturers staffing the booths. It's the dealers. And many dealers can't foot the expense.

PCP has killed the pricing, there’s nothing exciting and everything is lavished with tons of useless high tech twattery that nobody actually needs.. the industry is in dire straits… nobody has got any money to spend in a cost of living crisis and the industry doesn’t k ow how to respond.. it’s so so sad…

Both the mrs and me have loved going to the bike show over recent years, until we went to the nec campervan show , with a much larger show ( covering 6 halls ) free parking, and ticket prices of £12 each, showed us just how much we are being RIPPED OFF with motorcycle live .

The industry would, of course, claim that it’s just catering to the current market. Looking at the attendees it certainly wasn’t packed with under 25s…. and there’s the underlying problem. No amount of TFT displays, rider modes and retro paint schemes will fix that.

The UK, however, is a different animal as the rush to get a drivers license or a motorbike license is not the high priority for teenagers that it is in the USA or other transport dependent countries.

In 1976 a new Kawasaki Z1B was £1,249, more than the price of some cars, but the goalposts have moved significantly since then. The Z1 was top of the tree, but now it's becoming commonplace for run of the mill bikes to cost more than cars. Also, I thought that the majority of visitors (yes I went) were probably the same people who went in the 70's and 8o's, maybe because they now represent the only people who have the money to buy them!?!

However, I also ride an E-mountain bike and if you think the cost of new motorcycles is crazy, have a look at the e-bike market. I agree, you can’t compare the Indian made 400s to the Thai produced products. But I did think they were superior aesthetically and in apparent quality to the new Himmy. I think you are so right - most of what the industry is churning out is really uninteresting. They keep adding more and more power so you need more and more expensive hassle-prone tech to control it, and there is very little actual innovation going on. More and more adventure bikes for people who never go off road and more and more retro bikes which aren't as interesting as the originals! Like you, I think that the Kawasaki Hybrid tech looks interesting, though I don't think they are putting it in the right bikes yet - can't see sportsbikers going for the Ninja Hybrid for one thing. It would appeal to more practical bikers who might buy a Versys (or a Suzuki V-strom), a commuter/ light tourer, or even - whisper it - a maxi-scooter!

    • @I_am_Thursday
      @I_am_Thursday 7 месяцев назад

The problem is is that it's cheaper to run the ice 650 which has better performance. I disagree about innovation mechanically, if it ain't broke don't fix it, decades of evolution have got the fundamentals as good as it gets. Remember weird bimota steering or god help us suzukis rotary damping. Where it is shit is there are no good looking designs or drab boring colours. There's not one bike out there that makes me want it on looks other than impractical sportsbikes or dirt bikes. I'm frustrated by useless unreliable tech also but what pisses me off is if you want to avoid those bikes you're left with a so called budget bike where the componentry is crap as one is expected to aspire to ride a flagship 1200 like all the office boy fashionistas... who do 600 miles a year if they're lucky. I want MT07sp's etc.

@Mozzer_999 Wife has a 34,000 mile 7 year old Street Triple that's had no issues. I've owned a Speed Triple and a Tiger 800 without problems.
Everyone at some point has issues with bikes. I prefer the Yamaha bikes personally for quality and reliability but Triumph's are up there.

The MCN SHOW is a disgrace. It gets smaller and more expensive every year. It used to be in 4 halls and now could easily fit into 1 if it weren't for the needless nonsense arena. The ticket, food and drinks plus parking would get you to a better experience elsewhere and as few of the manufacturers bother to attend I wonder why we keep turning up for this sideshow.

At the price point the mfgs are asking for base motorcycles, I'm wondering how Harley is *still* the only union made motorcycle in the world (that I know of). Surely the plant workers for Bimmer, Honda, Ducati, etc must realize they're getting the shaft at this point. It's better to line the worker's pocket than the fat cat bosses and marketers who keep us rehashing the same thing year after year after year. The alleged gambit of unrestrained capitalism from the Rothbard/Thatcher/Reagan/Clinton types has always been innovation and opportunity but in nearly every sector we're seeing the opposite.
Tangential, I know. But this keeps rattling around in my head every time conversations about the alleged greatness of our consumer goods comes up.

Used to go many years ago, but not any more. Way too expensive just to get in. The programme used to be free as well, now they want to charge you £5 for a digital one full of adverts. I can remember coming back from Earls Court, where it used to be held, with bag loads of goodies, sadly not the case at Birmingham. Would have cost close to £100 for me to go.😮😮 No sorry, I'll just go to my multi franchised bike dealer, and see them there for free. Motorcyce Live has been a rip off for years.😢😢

Bikes costing more than cars is utterly fcuking ludicrous, and the spending doesn't stop at the purchase price, then there is dealer servicing which has also reached the level of cars, as have the spares. Followed by epic depreciation! No wonder biking is receding rapidly in popularity. As for the NEC, I just refuse to pay for the parking extortion racket and catering. I'll stick with my classics. Although there is one new bike I really do like, the MV Brutale Nurbergring, but not at £30k plus!

I have been riding bikes for 60 years , used to work for some large bike shops, so know the road, I have not been to the NEc for 20 years, since the internet and you tube came into being there was no point in going somwhere where you get right royally ripped off and leave with a bad taste in your mouth. it was interesting when you could buy end of lines or cheap stuff in the market place but those guys have been priced out of attending, i will be surprised if the do the show next year, far better to go to proper shows like eicma

My thoughts exactly. The show is too expensive and the bike industry is in the doldrums. I get the impression the Japanese are either complacent or can't see a future in bikes (that's big bikes in western markets, not the eastern commuter stuff) so they're doing the minimum necessary. It's almost like the 60's all over again where a flood of small imports saw off the British bike industry, except this time it's China doing the flooding and Honda et al sitting on their hands.

Unless you have to absolutely see a bike you can't wait to see in a few months (when they/it arrive/s in the dealers) when it's free why bother. £47ish to enter and park a car, to say nothing of the rip off drink/food prices once you're in there. The days of many retailers and good deals is long gone only a fraction bother going these days. All of these national shows XL, NEC etc are nothing more than a rip off and that's not just bike shows either. As mentioned by another Classic & Motorcycle Mechanics shows, or Carol Nash sponsored shows are way better.

Don't go to the NeC these days. Too expensive especially the car park which they hope you'll forget about by giving you a free bus ride to the exhibition centre. New bike don't really float my boat these days either. Must be getting old. Bought my last new bike in 2003. Since then it's been used stuff. Last purchase was a 05 Fazer 1000 for less than three grand. Whole lot of bike for the money and I'll defy anyone who says they need more power or speed on the road. Just can't justify spending ten grand plus on something that's not used every day.

Dick, you are forgetting that the average bike rider is incredibly conservative and does not want - or at least distrusts - real innovations. OK, Mr.Average might be persuaded by adaptive cruise control and quickshifters. But as far as real innovations are concerned such as the Yamaha Niken, Honda DCT gearboxes, Honda DN-01 hydrostatic drive , and all Maxi-Scooters and EV's- they are filed away under strange curiosities. They are dismissed simply as "Not Motorcycles As We Know Them". Even the BMW Telelever and Duo-lever still get distrust and wierd looks from the man-in-the-street as well as some journos and we've had Telelever since 1993.
So tell us - what game-changers were you looking forward to at the NEC or hoping for in 2024?

Years ago it was a buzzing place and show. Last year was utter rubbish no atmosphere like a stroll round a showroom and quite empty. Tiny in size compared too. Decided this year no chance. The motorcycle bubble will burst like the cars and housing.. never had new bike or car never will. The mcycle generation are getting older in this country at least there will be so much of an over supply bikes be worth nowt. Wheres the industry lobbying govt for youth motorcycling. Oh yeah it’s dangerous isn’t it. Judging by uninsured immigrants/ auto thefts but having a 250cc motorcycle is bad for you

What struck me was how bland and ugly most new models are. The latest sports 600s are easily out performed by any 600 from the 1990s. Parallel twins replacing in line 4s with less power, less torque and less fun. Adventure bikes as big as a truck to travel around the world at £20K+ when in reality it will spend most of its time at 20mph in Wales. The spirit of biking has been lost by corporations devoid of any passion for their own products other than to hit ESG targets.

Sanity check…£20k now buys a good used 7 or 8 yr old low miles top spec Lexus RX450h….or a bike from bmw or ducati that doesn’t do anything a bike couldn’t do 8 years ago except be likely worse on reliability😂.
