Hi Mark, Yes, you are correct, but every once in a while I will alter a lyric ever so slightly, which I did here, intentionally, but thanks for the feedback and for watching, Sincerely, Carl.
Hi Anthony, Thanks for your nice comment and your interest in my guitar. It’s a Gibson L-48 that my dad purchased new in the mid 50’s, with the intention of learning to play, but never did. I picked it up around 1960 at age 18 and started to play and have been playing ever since. I also played Electric Bass and String Bass in Jazz and Dance bands for about 25 years, until 1995 when I developed Tinnitus and Hyperacusis (Sensitivity to sound) and had to stop playing live music. So, I can only play at home, carefully and softly. I even cover my Guitar F-Holes with thin cardboard that you will occasionally see on some of my older videos. I play Fingerstyle (No Pick) and use D’Addario Medium Gage (13/56) Flat-Wound Strings. Best Regards, Carl.
I didn't know the song until just now, but your delivery and execution have made this the "definitive" version, for me. For whatever reason, RUclips has been recommending a lot of really small channels to me lately, and I'm genuinely loving it. There's a lot of wonderful stuff out there below the overproduced and homogenized surface that's full of trendy, fast-paced, hyper-edited videos. Watching you play reminds me of my first guitar teacher.
Great rendition Carl, of one of the many classic songs composed by the geniuses of both Jerome Kerr and Jonny Mercer. The first time I heard this song, many years ago, it was performed by Andy Williams. I highly recommend that you consider checking out that version as I think it's amazing. 😊
that was great!! Would you mind telling me what guitar that is? I love the sound of that guitar. I'd love to pick one of those up myself here in New York. Thanks a lot ....
Hi Ellen, Thanks for your nice comment and your interest in my guitar. It's a Gibson L-48 Archtop Acoustic Guitar that my dad bought new in the mid 1950's from Hospe's Music Store in Omaha, Nebraska. I started playing it in 1960 at age 18. According to the internet, this was one of Gibson's most affordable guitars, and they made quite a few, starting in 1946 and continuing thru the 1960's and possibly beyond, depending on which source you read. I remember my dad saying that he paid $100 for it. So, adjusted for inflation from 1955 to now would be about $1,100. There are always a few for sale for $2,000 plus or minus. Even though it is considered a full-size guitar, the body is considerably smaller than say my Martin D-35 Guitar. I measured both and found the Gibson Body is 3.25" deep everywhere, whereas the Martin's depth ranges from 4" where the Neck meets the guitar to 4.56" in the middle to 4.875" at the back end. My ears don’t allow me to play my Martin anymore due to the Tinnitus and Sound Sensitivity that I became afflicted with in 1995, so I had to re-connect with my old Gibson, which is quite a bit softer than the Martin, and the Gibson is easier to play. So, I have grown to prefer it. Even though the Gibson was well cared for, it required some maintenance over the years: New frets, New tuning pegs and New tail stock. I would think many of the used ones would have needed similar repairs. I know a few guitar craftsmen, I’ll ask around to see what else I can learn and let you know. In the meantime, let me know what you think of this information, Thanks Carl.
