Greetings from Omaha, Nebraska. I started playing stringed instruments in 1960 at the age of 18, Guitar, Mandolin, Electric Bass and Acoustic String Bass. I played rhythm guitar in several Mandolin-Guitar Duos and Electric Bass and String Bass in a variety of Jazz and Dance Bands for 25 years. I had to stop playing live music in 1995 due to an onset of Tinnitus and Hyperacusis (Sound Sensitivity) but still play my guitar softly at home.
I am mostly self-taught and play mostly by ear, in a jazz style, and I like to sing along. My guitar is a Gibson L-48 Acoustic, Archtop that my dad bought new in 1955. I play finger style using flat-wound, medium gage steel strings.
I love all kinds of music but am particularly fond of Jazz and the Great American Song Book. Most of the songs I perform are American Popular Songs written from 1920 - 1950. One of my main goals is to keep this music alive!
I try to answer all my viewers’ comments!

Greetings Carl, Here's telling you I subscribed to your channel a couple of days ago, I suppose - subscriber #295!! Thanks so much for your rendering of this fabulous 1943 song and the preceding much appreciated review. A key point you made is the merits of understatement in it - so a toast to Mesrs van Heusen and Burke!! I'm pretty sure I first got to know it about 20 years ago via the 1996 Karrin Allyson c.d "Collage" on Concord Jazz - it really stood out!... I had actually been checking out quite a few YT videos of assorted performances and was particularly gratified by your commentary but didn't quite catch your name - it sounded like Carlo Steffano!! - it was I think when following through on an revisitation of their 1944 hit "Like someone in love" that actually nailed down correct spelling of your name & your channel among the long list of YT vids. You might enjoy these versions in Swedish and Finnish (to be continued) ...
ruclips.net/video/7Z8ngeiD0Vw/видео.html in Swedish, literally - "it could happen this evening"; ruclips.net/video/8PRSHAKbEx4/видео.html in Finnish - siltä "se tapahtuu" - that's how "it happens", Timo Kiiskinen's album is actually titled "Chet" !!
Much respect, sir. Beautiful arrangement.
How are you holdin' up, Carl? Hoping for a new video soon!
Thanks 🎉

Wow I really love the performance at the end, really beautiful
Thanks for your very nice comment and I'm glad you liked the song. I recorded it early in my RUclips career when I had very few subscribers, so it didn't get much exposure, so I'm delighted with your response!
Nice!

Hey Daniel, always nice to hear from you and thanks for your nice compliment. Ya, I should have paid more tribute to The Duke. I'll make up for that on a future video.

❤
Thanks Roey, Glad you enjoyed this great old tune, kind regards, Carl.
Lovely cover, recently heard the ella fitzgerald version and I've been obsessed with it ever since. Can't wait to cover it myself. Thanks for the background information you provided in the beginning super informative.
Thanks Diego for your thoughtful comment, a couple of versions I liked on RUclips: one, a Verve 1956 recording by Billie Holiday backed up by a small ensemble of Jazz greats, and another, more recent, live performance by the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, featuring Anastasia Ivanova. I think you'll like both!
Hey Diego, I thought you were commenting on "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me", sorry for the mix-up, thanks, Carl.
Nice to see you Bob. Steve Shipe and I had lunch today at the Sons of Italy. I hope all is well with you and your loved ones! Mike Anderson I did subscribe.
Hi Mike, Nice to hear from you and I’m glad you and Steve are keeping in touch. I have many fond memories of you both, especially back in the 80’s and 90’s, before automation and the globalization of manufacturing decimated the Tool & Die trade. We were all so proud of the skilled work we brought to so many projects and you guys were a big part of that. I hope you and your family are well, say Hi to Steve from me, kind regards, Bob.
One of the greatest albums of all time Ella and Louis
Yes, one of my favorites also, thanks for your comment!
Commendatore Distefano. Internet is as fascinating and dangerous as life itself... the ugly and the divine clash on a daily basis. if it wasn't for your comment on a "speranze perdute" rendition on youtube, i would've missed another beautiful soul tipping the scales ever so slightly in favor of the beautiful. your authenticity commands respect yet, at the same time, induces blissful serenity. cent'anni, commendatore.
Hi there, what a beautiful, eloquently composed complement! Thank you very much. Since you enjoyed "Speranze Perdute", please check out Brazilian Choro Guitarist and Mandolinist Marco Ruviaro on RUclips. I think you will like the music!
How are you doing now, Carl?
Hi Oscar, nice to hear from you. I Just had another eye surgery, which appears to be successful, but is going to require several weeks of recuperation, so I'm hoping to resume posting some videos sometime this month (September 2024). Thanks for your concern, Sincerely, Carl.
@@carlr.distefano7928 I wish you a speedy recovery, Carl. When you’re feeling better I’d love to hear you sing and play Welcome To My World. Or maybe a Dean Martin song? Houston would be a good one. Take care, Carl.
@@oscarlarsson2828 Thanks for your well-wishes Oscar. I have at least 3 songs on my RUclips channel that Dean Martin sang: "Return to Me", "Two Sleepy People" and "Walkin' my Baby Back Home". Thanks for your interest in Dean, he was also one of my favorite singers! Check out his harmony parts on "Two Sleepy People".
Disney!!!
Yes! Thanks for listening and commenting, Kind Regards, Carl.
Superbe.
Thank you Sir, much appreciated, Best Regards, Carl.
Beautifully played.
Thanks Timothy, for your very nice comment, glad you liked this great old tune, sincerely, Carl.
Wonderful rendition, Carl. Hearing about your family history mentally put me in the kitchen with you and your uncle, almost hearing in my head the music you two must have been playing together... And since you mentioned it, O Marenariello has indeed seen an English version in 1945. Johnny Farrow adapted the music and Marty Symes wrote a new set of lyrics. They titled it 'I Have But One Heart'. It's been a big hit for most crooners of the time, but you might know it from The Godfather soundtrack, where Al Martino first sang it (and later re-recorded it for his follow-up LP). Best regards, Nik
Hello Niki, Glad you enjoyed this timeless Neapolitan Classic and thanks for your heartfelt comment regarding my Uncle Litzo and our special relationship. Yes, I am familiar with "I Have but One Heart" which I posted on my RUclips channel in Sept 2022. I think you'll like it as it includes a section of the lyric in Napoletana, Best Regards, Carl.
Beautiful work, sir
Hi Pablo, Nice to hear from you, glad you enjoyed this delightful little song. I'm grateful to Kubric for saving it from obscurity!
Nice to see you 👍 here by youtube again with a beautiful song.
Hello Mattheus, nice to hear from. Thanks for your kind remark, Best Regards, Carl.
Good to see you! This is beautiful thank you!! 🖤 Will still be praying for your eyes. 🖤
Hi Night Shade, thanks for watching and listening. My eyes are slowly improving, thanks for your prayers.
@@carlr.distefano7928 That's good to hear! 🖤
That was just wonderful, I really enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing Carl. Take care, I hope your eyes feel better soon!
Hi Rosemary, glad you enjoyed the song. My eyes are doing better, thanks for your concern.
What a great performance. Your articulation and timing are impeccable Carl. Especially considering the cataract recovery. Thanks for posting this "plaintive melody."
Thanks John, what a lovely comment, I really appreciate your support, sincerely, Carl.
Great to see you back !!
Thanks so much Big T. Nice to hear from a loyal fan!
Im gonna try to learn this i got my guitar a week ago see how it goes
A word of caution: Don't try to do Too Much, Too Soon. Learning to play the guitar is a long, slow process that starts with very basic fundamentals and slowly adds new building blocks. Find a good teacher that will help you on your journey, good luck, Carl!
Thank you very much again dear Carln for another wonderful song and another sweet performance. I will definitely watch “Singin' in the Rain” again and pay more attention to this fantastic melody. I'm worried about your eyes. please, take care of yourself. Love , Pamen.
Hi Pamen, It's always nice to hear from you as I sense your deep love for the music and message in so many great songs. Your appreciation makes all the hard work worth it! And thanks, also, for your concern about my eyes which are slowly improving with each passing week. Best regards, Carl.
oh you sensitive old geezer. You remind me of an old Ned Flanders. With the moustache wagging along to the rhythm.
Amazing, thank you so much for sharing!!!

Young man, thank you for this amazing song you must be a very good grand father.
Thanks for your heart-felt compliment, so glad you liked this great old tune, Sincerely, Carl.
Your style is so unique, very sensitive, not like other versions without a bit of touch! Definitely the best interpretation I've heard :)
Hello bonacera, always nice to hear from a fellow player, thanks so much for your beautiful compliment. It means a lot to me and makes all the hard work worth it!
Beautifully done, sir!
