i found it incredibly frustrating how he didnt realize that earlier. If it was just a rearrangement of letters, the killers first and last name would have a grand total of TWO vowels. it would be unpronounceable

Frankly, I want to know why it is that when you try to investigate a murder, the cops are always out to kill you. That doesn't make sense to me.
There is an in game reason but I can't remember
It is good to point out that detectives aren't part of the police in this, they are free lancers who everyone hates because this is dystopia so detectives are messed up usually
The world is a climate-apocalypse corporate dystopia where Starch Kola (Put some life into it!), the conglomerate, is President. As in, the corporation itself holds the office. Also there's something about England and France historically not separating in the medieval era I think, it's all background lore stuff.
Anyway, the deal with law enforcement is that it's theoretically entirely privatized now. I'm not sure of the limits of it, but in the tutorial case you play a ex-detective out of a job due to that, for example. As such, the enforcers aren't your colleagues and you technically start the game with no legal backing to your investigations, even though City Hall is happy to pay for murderers being found out on a freelance basis. With the new update, one of the new higher-social-rank perks is actually the ability to investigate crime scenes legally, so that's neat.
You don't start the game as a registered detective.

Relating to what Tomato was talking about people's expectations for early access/indie games; gamers really take for granted how insanely difficult and time consuming developing games is. I see this entitled attitude where people give negative reviews for games like Deep Rock Galactic because season 5 hasn't come out yet. Like bro, the updates are free, and it took me like 400 hours to get all the cores for all the weapons, I am satisfied with the $20 I spent.
Consumers need to get over this expectation that games will entertain us forever, they won't. Sooner or later a game will stop receiving updates, and most of us will move on like it never existed.
