That 1-handed roll is the gravity blast. It's mixed down on the album, but it's on there too. Sam has a great video on his channel that explains and demonstrates how the gravity blast works. In short, you hit the drum skin and the rim at the same time on the down stroke. On the up stroke, the tip of the stick should naturally come down for a second hit on the skin. Rinse and repeat. Sex.
why is this reaction so underwatched its better quality than most overreactions out there. the guy has solid technical knowledge about music and background information while seeming genuinely excited.
This song got me over the hump, a gateway to more extreme death metal-based stuff like SYL, which I could not get into before... Kept listening to it on the album where it works so well within the whole and with Anneke's vocal line for relief and it sort of "trained" my ear... and then when it exits into Why? it's total magic! )))
Yes! The Empath album flows so wonderfully. I definitely want to do an Empath album review at some point. Funnily enough, I got into Devin via SYL first
Wearing your own merch, yep it's laundry day for me too bud. We've all been there. So yeah, I haven't heard this one yet, we'll be reacting to this one together. Gotta go music's starting.
You nailed it on that "most SYL song" comment. I was just thinking that. I'm guessing 66samus had some influence on Devy for this one. It's crazy to see the way different musicians can influence each other's sound? Have you seen any of 66samus's videos?
Actually, Devin picked drummers that would suit the music he wrote, which is why Empath has 3 different drummers on it! Pretty unconventional. I have seen a little of 66Samus's videos. He's a great drummer! 😄
@@KarmaHoudini17 I didn't know that. thanks. Ive only seen a few of 66samus's videos too. yes hes super talented. you should do a reaction to his cover of the `1960s song wipeout. If your not down or too swamped with requests for it that cool. if thats the case I request you to check it out on your own time recreationally. ypou should also recreationally check out his video "How drummers knock" its focking hillariously true. I showed it to my old drummer and he got a big kick out of it. the comments on there are funny too.
Speaking of jazz fusion, are you familiar with the bass player, Victor Wooten? He's definitely one of the best there is on his instrument, and it'd be interesting I think to see you react to his EMGTV performance of "The Lesson."
I am familiar with Victor, of course! But I haven't taken a deep dive into his work, so there is a lot I haven't seen/heard. I'll try to check out The Lesson! Cheers

Sex.
Oh so that's what a gravity blast is 😮😯
I knew the term, but not the specifics of how to do it. Thanks for explaining!
Ohhhh yurrrrrr!!!!

🥰 I appreciate the kind words; glad you enjoyed it! Feel free to share this video around
Gravity Blast 💥 super fun beat man! It’s wild and sounds like a big engine !
that first blast is usually called a dirk blast. dirk verbeuren was on devin's deconstruction record and is with megadeth now. really good drummer.
I love deconstruction. didn't know he had a blast beat named after him though, that's rad
