Detroit Mint has released a great new kickstrater bit.ly/2OEncE1 Watch, a reimagined Bullhead Chronograph. I loved the film Once Upon a Time in Holly wood and this watch reminds me so much of Brad Pitt's watch in that film when he played the stuntman Cliff. I have it here on an excellent cuff watch strap by my friends over at Man Cave Leather www.mancavelea...

Thanks for the review and the heads up. Just got onto the Detroit Mint Kickstarter site and ordered the brushed brass version for $250 plus shipping. This seems like a great bargain for the hand wound chronograph. I can testify to the decent quality of the Seagull movement being used for this project (it's a good one that is used in my Seagull 1963 chronograph). I really think using this manual chronograph is the way to go. I don't think I've ever seen the Seiko Automatic movement (NE88) come in under about 16.5 mm on any watch yet. It's a thick one. I'm also glad that Citizen is getting some love for the older chronographs from the 70's. I own several and always wondered why they never got the love that Seiko got. Plus those old Citizen's are Flyback chronos as well!

Hey! You will have to let me know what you think of it when you receive the watch. I would love one of the vintage citizens (I think they make the best quarts watches) but I know a lot have been messed about with. I wouldn’t trust knowing enough about them not to get stung on one of the bullhead vintage ones

Did the watch end up having the seagull movement? On the website now they are showing a quartz movement.

Red Monkey Designs make great straps and made the strap for the Brad’s watch. I have three of their watches and cuff straps do wear out over time. However Red Monkey repair their straps for free and I’ve sent mine back to them in LA from the UK with no hassles. They only charge for postage. I found a bulkhead in mint condition gold so I’m sending it to Red Monkey for a strap to be fitted. If you want an alternative I’d also look out for the Red Monkey cuff strap watches.

Hi Celon, I looked at red monkey and they only ship them with a quartz watch and not on their own? Also the cuff leather looks considerably thicker than the one in the film. I wonder if they used a different leather for the one in the film. I can’t speak to the quality of them so thanks for sharing your experience.

The Casual Watch Reviewer Brad’s was custom made by them they’ve made two watches for him. Check out the Red Monkey watch he wears in the film The Mexican also a leather cuff watch. They do custom straps too and if you have deep pockets like Brad’s you can ask for thicker leather I’m sure!

@@CasualWatchReviews I can, the straps on www.redmonkeydesigns.com are EXACTLY what Brad wore on the film, he's made watches for Brad for years. They also DO offer it with the band only :) you just have to use the 'bullhead discount code'.

Really intriguing watch, thanks for the review. As a resident of southeast Michigan myself, I think it's fantastic that a Detroit-based watchmaker is doing interesting things like this. And if they don't follow your lead and start offering a cuff-style strap like that as an option, they're missing the boat--great look.

I love this watch. I’ve been hankering for a Bull head for ages. I would be happy with a Meca quartz, but a hand wound is just fine. All that is missing, is those divine vertical day / date complications from the original, and the wild colours.

I've embarrassingly been away from the channel for so long. There's a lot of content that I've missed. I really like where you have taken the show, Sam. As for the watch? I like everything about it except the font choice. I don't feel like it compliments what the watch is about. I would like to see a hacking/hand wind movement too, just to bring the case height down and bring an even more retro vibe. Great content as always.

I am not really into bullhead chronographs and I would think that the cuff style strap would be sweaty - but I have to say this watch looks really cool! And at ~$200-$250 it is a really interesting value proposition. Thank you for another awesome review Sam 😊

Hey Jeffrey, the cuff strap is unfinished on the back so I don’t think it will be that sweaty. Maybe if it was finished or maybe polished on the back? Its an interesting design for sure and I’m glad I got to review it!

Hey Sam, this is a great watch, especially for the money even though I would prefer the brushed finish. As you know I’m a big vintage Seiko bullhead fan and my blue one is on its way from the restorers. But it would be cool to compare this new bullhead to an original Citizen bullhead where this one obviously got its inspiration. Tell Dave well done!

I too am a big fan of the Seiko bullhead styled watches as an alternative I got a TicTAC Movement in Motion which utilizes I believe the Seiko made VK61 movement, which in my option is a Seiko under a different name. I'm new to this micro brand of watch but interested in adding one to my growing collection. Thanks for the review Sam.

That's an interesting watch, and cool to see somebody remake a bullhead in that Citizen style. It's so thick, that combined with the 14mm case I feel I might find it a big big for me, even with a 7.25" wrist. That's too bad about the limited availability of the Seiko chronograph movements. That explains why I don't see them more often in independent brands.

Great vid, about time the Citizen Challenge Timer ( to give it it's original name) got some love, it's a beautiful watch and an astounding bit of engineering for the early 70s (not 1969 when the film was set!). I'm a bit of a geek for these and have been for some time, happy to help if you need any additional information as I've spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to get parts etc for a couple of restoration projects. This bloody film is excellent but has pushed prices up but you can still pick up a good one for sub £500 and I'd thoroughly recommend it, the movement is seriously bulletproof, high beat and smooth as anything you'll see from much better regarded Swiss makers.
As for this modern interpretation, it looks pretty good, lovely design and clearly heavily influenced by the citizen original. However it's miles too big in all dimensions! 42mm is too big and not in keeping with the type of watch it's a homage of nor current trends for watches to be a bit smaller. The case is very tall, designed for an auto movement clearly but not reduced in line with the thinner manual wind movement they've opted for which is a shame. See through case backs are a bit passe unless you're going to stick a very nicely decorated movement in there, and for the price this seems unlikely ( although if it's like the one in the seagull 1963, I would absolutely understand why they did).
I applaud what this company are doing, I hope it does well. This is my first visit to the channel (promise I won't bang on this long on all your vids) and enjoyed the review, thanks! I'll shut up now....

@David Diegel Nice, you did well to find the gold ones from the film in any decent condition, these are mostly beat up or badly restored. I currently have two I'm restoring, one silver bullhead and one octagon plus two 'donor' bullheads for parts. If you need anything, hit me up I might have what you need.

Hiya mate nice review, as others have mentioned the font on dial doesn't work for me and some other dial colours would look better, I also think a bit of brushing to the case sides would take this watch up a level. I'll be looking out to see more on these 👍

It’s as close as any one has got to it. This was before citizen started making these again so he did a good job. Theirs are only quartz and you’re limited by the configuration of the movements for the position of the dial on mechanicals. You can tell how much work has gone into this.
