Social media really has been a gift to capitalism with how companies are able to pump out aesthetic clothes (looking at u shein and romwe) every time tiktok trends a new one
Now that i realize it the stark difference in those under 25 vs. over 25 is insane. Obviously this is just an estimate but i seriously believe this is the difference between those growing up on the internet vs growing up with the internet.
criminally underrated. ive been thinking and talking about this for awhile, i think social media is to blame for the alienation from society, changing perceptions over communication, more “what can i gain from you” view on friends, subcultures being watered down to “aesthetics”. i honestly never thought id say this, but im proud of texas for one thing: banning social media for minors without parental consent (even though i know plenty will just allow it not seeing the harm). thanks for putting the work into this video.
My mom would of check my phone I would of got in so much trouble. My mom was old, when I was born she was 42. So teenage years she was already in her mid 50s she didn't know shit about phones I still to this day explain to her how to do stuff on her phone like people do with their grandparents. I love my mom tho she was a single mother because my dad passed when I was 9 after two years of being in and out the hospital. She did get remarried when I was 13
@@kyleesimone Your welcome yes I have healed from it pretty well. I have been going to therapy for a while and it has helped a lot. With that My ADHD, DPD, and a ton of other thing. I am in a much better place from like even a year ago.
I have been thinking about how the algorithm has affected personal development and you really distilled it with some sharp research to back it up. Great video!!
An old fart's perspective: For mental health, do not take social media seriously. If something you do or like actually has a name to it, great. But don't take that too seriously either.
There simply is no sense of community anymore. We are the generation with the most flexibility to pave our own path and be our own person which is amazing but also isolates everyone bc of the modern independence that then leads to people looking into themselves by there selves where as back in the day u were put into a culture or religion that gave you a sense of where to dictate who you are. Freedom and liberty has so many pros but has also made people more isolated disconnected from other people not knowing who their identity is in such a isolated society tht back in the day would give you you’re identity. And ofc the internet pushing so much other people going through a identity crisis those people will themselves join this online trend of a group of individuals looking for there identity and these same people join this identity crisis group bc they in the process join this same community of people who dont know themselves and they are no longer alone bc they have found a community

This was well-timed! People really neded this take. Its true that identity can be constructed. Thats all the more reason for identity not to be viewed as "end-all, be-all". Identity and belonging are not fixed, but rather arbitrary. No matter how detailed a person can imitate a group...sometimes they simply just dont belong. And then other times, they are a perfect fit! But dont worry, loneliness isnt permanent...unless you choose for it to be that way.
People were calling eachother posers in alt-circles 20 years ago, too. People were doing it more for the aesthetic back then, too (which is why they got called posers). I don't really care if a person is in a music scene or not; they can express themselves and dress however they'd like. It doesn't hurt anyone
Disagreed on a bit: there are definitely harmful trends. A lot of (even western countries) outside america have a “face whiting” trend. Many of these products are actually dangerous. What I’m against is the implication that certain trends (old money) still have to be connected with their roots. I also don’t believe we should necessarily be against trends that mostly white people engage with. Doing this sets a precedent that all trends must be inclusive, which I rather not set.
skin bleaching is definitely a plague! growing up black, history has ALWAYS been a super important factor of my life for many reasons, a few including those which i mentioned in the video. it may be irrelevant to you, but it matters to me, and it’s just one of those things i can’t ignore. but i never said "they had to be connected." however, 9 times out of 10, a lot of things still are. for that reason, i like to educate myself before engaging in anything and stated other people should do the same. and also never said to be against anything white people engage with. the point of what i actually said was to show the ignorance of people on the internet. people are quick to hop on a trend completely not realizing how and why they got where they are today. thanks for watching though and tuning in! i appreciate your thoughts :)
Honestly every generation has had/have identify crises i mean look at how people in the 90s were obsessed with Rock and wanting to be metal and early 2000s had emo teens But the problem with gen z is the internet and how obsessed they are with it I am a gen z and when i download TikTok i started having boby issues and even through i should identify as something i am not just cause TikTok content creators are trying to make it cool and awesome especially with people pretending to have disorders especially ADHD, austim and DID The whole pronouns issues is also becoming i HUGE problem, i mean people are calling themselves "rats/rat" and "slug/sluugie" ???? It's really unfortunate as these are the people making the LGBT community look bad. And it's not just gen z even the generation before gen z is also copying gen z as they have seen how people fear these people so you see adult males calling themselves she/her aka pedophiles trying to get closer to child and the rest is already know, even when parents try to excuse them away from their children the parents are called transphobic
I hear what you're saying. The few odd apples make it more difficult for already marginalized groups to be taken seriously, especially since there's still a rampant amount of queerphobia and transphobia in 2024. Honestly, though, the few shouldn't speak for the many and any adult should be able to see that the people who overdoing it are few and far between, but it is a bit more difficult for teenagers to see this and not have strong feelings towards this.

2:30 well that argument is so annoying, my God you act like we have the Monopoly on braids. If someone wants to enjoy my culture because they like it that much, go ahead. But trying to GateKeep and control who enjoys Black Culture is wild. and yes I can say that because my skin is melanated too so. And I implore you to name one thing about Black Culture that is not shared amongst any other. And before you go to African culture, make sure you know the difference between the tribes and countries that live there not everyone in Africa is the same person.

Aesthetics aren’t the problem, social media and the way we use it are

Social media has been a plague for humanity. We are living in a state of limbo. Touch grass.
