  • An updated look at the severe storms for tonight and tomorrow for the Great Plains and Mid-Mississippi Valley.
    Tonight:
Supercell storms develop in northern Kansas and Nebraska after sunset. High helicity values and mid-level lapse rates indicate a decent threat for tornadoes and very large hail.
To the south, a cap in place over Oklahoma and Texas means storms will struggle to develop here. Not as good hodograph curvature in this area means that any isolated supercell that can break through the cap will pose mainly a large hail threat. There's a chance no storms will develop over Oklahoma.
    Tomorrow, April 16th:
Large cluster of storms moves east through Iowa and northern Missouri tomorrow morning into the early afternoon. The linear setup of the storms will help lower the tornado threat, but given the extreme helicity values over Iowa, we could be talking about situation where we have multiple low-end tornadoes embedded within the squall line.
To the south, an isolated tornado possible over northern Missouri with even lower probabilities to the south of that. Otherwise, large hail possible once again over Iowa especially.
A secondary squall line might develop along the cold front tomorrow evening in western Iowa and move eastward through the state, renewing the threat of large hail and maybe an isolated tornado. This will also clip northern Missouri.
