Scream is a 1996 American slasher film directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson. The film stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich, Jamie Kennedy, and Drew Barrymore. Released on December 20, it follows high school student Sidney Prescott (Campbell) and her group of friends in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California, who become the targets of a mysterious killer in a Halloween costume known as Ghostface. The film satirizes the clichés of the slasher genre popularized in films such as Halloween (1978), Friday the 13th (1980) and Craven's own A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Scream was considered unique at the time of its release for featuring characters aware of real-world horror films who openly discussed the clichés that the film attempted to subvert.

The movie is 'predictable' because all slasher movies after it copied it. This revamped the slasher movies and set a new template. Before this, there was only ever one killer. We were SHOCKED when there were two.
Thank you for saying it. Hearing him say that it was "predictable" was such a damn shame and made me shake my head. I'm so glad I was able to see this back then and appreciate how brilliant of a game changer it was to forever change the cinematic landscape for slashers.

A shame modern audiences don't recognize Drew Barrymore. Back when this came out, people were shocked she was killed off in the beginning. Considering her face was on all the posters.
One of the thing that modern viewers miss about the opening is that girl was played by Drew Barrymore -- a big name actress. Killing a big name actress like her in the opening minutes was a shock, everything thought she would be the main girl.

I knew she wasn't the lead as she is in no other scenes in the trailer and the original trailer had the whole first half of the opening scene in it!

@Ariel Dancing Queen Not only was she on the poster, but she was front and center. The promotional purposely was making Drew seem like the main and final girl, only to be killed in the very opening scene. Drew had the brilliant idea, they took the risk, and it paid off in the end..
Not to mention she was showcased in all the advertisements. Everyone going in thought she was going to be the heroine - NOPE. They killed her 5 mins in 🤭
when this came out everyone expected drew barrymore to be the final girl since she was the biggest name in this film. so imagine everyone's absolute surprise when she died first, LOL. scream is my favorite franchise, its so good!

I love that it makes fun of itself - with the rules and with Drew Barrymore. I remember an interview when she was talking about it and didn't want to be a head star in a horror movie. when they told her the reality of her character's fate, she loved the idea. it messed with everyone that she was pushed as the lead and on posters and then boom........nope

Ghostface is voiced by Roger L Jackson in all films. You can't go by the voice. During filming, Roger was never in sight of the other actors. It made it more real for the actors

After Scream, a lot of scary movies tried to emulate its success. Scream itself pokes fun at the horror genre and slasher tropes from past films, so many things are meant to feel predictable. But, it also innovated many new tactics in horror storytelling. Scream redefined slasher films and revitalized the entire genre.
If I remember correctly, that line David Arquette says, “My whole life”, after Gale sees the car and asks if that’s what he’s looking for, was improvised. He actually meant that.

6:20 I love that final question, because it's a trick question. Because we later find out there are two killers, we know that both of them were at the front and back doors, meaning that they were setting up poor Casey to be 'wrong' no matter what. They set up this whole twisted game and then they rigged it.

they did a good job at the red herrings because at first you think it’s billy because he’s so suspicious but then after sydney’s attacked you think it can’t be him because he couldn’t have changed out of the costume and run out of the house that fast but then the phone drops so then you thinks it’s him again and then he gets “stabbed” so you think it’s not again 😭
another thing, you can tell who’s the killer and who’s the one talking on the phone because billy’s the cinephile and is always quizzing everyone about movies while stu just acts out the kills.

I knew when Stu went to the kitchen to get more beer because it was only one of two options: either he sent Tatum to get more beer when they didn't need it, or he went to the garage with her literal dead body hanging from the cat door and didn't care... But Stu shocked a lot of people. They made Billy super obvious to make the second killer twist a surprise. In 1996 it was basically unheard of in the genre.

It's funny you both thought she was going to die early in the movie, but this was a surprise to a lot of the audience, partly because Drew Barrymore was a big star. She was offered the role of Sidney but said she wanted to play the first girl because it would be more surprising when she died.

I've been watching horror films since I was 5 (over 30 years) and Scream is the only film to ever scare me. I saw it when I was 10 and it just stuck with me. That's why it's my favorite film of all time.
That’s because Scream is the most realistic, if not the only realistic, horror franchise in horror slasher movie history, and Ghostface can exist in real life, that’s what makes it so terrifying. Scream is the best!

Fun Fact: Matthew Lillard ad-libbed the "My mom and dad are going to be so mad at me." line. Director Wes Craven thought it was so funny that he kept it in the film.
Scene 118 Fact: The party scene near the end of the film runs forty-two minutes long. It was shot over the course of twenty-one days from the time the sun set to the time it rose. After it wrapped, the cast/crew jokingly called it "The longest night in horror history." and had "I SURVIVED SCENE 118" (which was the name of the scene during shooting) t-shirts made.
Bait And Switch Fact: Drew Barrymore was originally cast as Sidney Prescott (eventually played by Neve Campbell). But Drew insisted that if she played Casey, a victim in just the opening scene alone, then it would make the audience think anything could happen. Barrymore being given top billing and appearing on the poster was meant to mislead the audience. Thus one of the most hated horror tropes was created.
The “fucking hit me with the phone dick” was also ad-libbed, Skeet was supposed to just put the phone down, but because of the excess of blood it slipped out of his hand

How can you bring up caller id? Lol you have to remember this came out back in the day when that didn’t exist. When you answered the phone you had no idea who was going to be on the other line. This movie was ahead of it’s time when it came out. With the fact that there was two killers and the meta of them talking about horror movies as they are in one. And the main one is how innovative it was. This movie had EVERYONE terrified to answer their phone at night when alone. This changed how people thought. Something that you will sadly never be able to witness by watching it in the current time. Glad you all liked it though

I remember back in the '90s, when phone message machines became popular, I just couldn't believe there were people who wouldn't answer the phone even if they were home! As the years passed, though, there were other ways to contact people (assuming you even wanted to any more), and most phone calls were now scams, ads, wrong numbers or morons, so -- answering the phone became a rare occurrence.

Fun fac,t it´s that Dewey (David Arquette) and Gale (Courteney Cox) were married and had one daughter after this. Since 2012 they´re not together but they initiated that relationship. You can see the chemistry.

Love your Scream reactions. Early on you say people in the 90s were gullible. Absolutely, but I will say that in the horror movies of the 70s and 80s they were picking up hitch hikers like it was a safe and normal thing to do. A lot of behaviors are just so different decade to decade and it is fascinating. I would argue that we are currently innocent to the next decade's behaviors to horror and making us this decade feel out of the norm.
I can tell y’all are very young, because back then we didn’t have caller id back in ‘96 that was a luxury for most. You had to answer every phone call then. Especially if you didn’t have call waiting you got a busy signal trying to call someone who was on the line.

All of deputy Dewey's facial expressions are hilarious. This movie was meant to be a horror/comedy. But in all the Scream movies Dewey's facial expressions are just great.

Not everyone had caller ID in the 90s or bothered to get it. So, most of the time you wouldn't know who was calling. You literally just picked up and said hello to see who it was. I'm not even that old. I'm 32 and I know and remember this when I was a little kid back then.
Fun fact: the Ghostface voice is the same voice actor as Mojo JoJo from power puff girls😂

Some of this movie has to be taken in context. At the time horror as a genre was dead. All the 80s slasher icons weee pumping out self serious trash sequels. This movie was the first real “meta” look at the genre itself. The characters in the movie had actually seen previous horror movies and knew the tropes of it. This subverted those expectations at every turn. It did things like put Drew Barrymore as the main face on the poster because she was the biggest star and then killed her in the first 20 minutes. It was shocking at the time. Things from this movie that seem clique now are only that because almost every horror movie from the late 90s and into the mid 00s when the remake craze took over were knock offs of scream.

My favorite movie/franchise of all time. Scream WAS my childhood. Sidney is THE final girl. Scream without her isn’t Scream for me.
Rose McGowan had to act like she couldn’t fit through the animal door….she was small enough to go through without a problem…. They even had to staple he shirt to the frame to help with support….
One thing, that EVERYBODY is overlooking - Billy called STU. Because in jail he was observed during phone call, but MOST IMPORTANTLY, he got VOICE CHANGER, that Billy in jail/arrest did NOT have. 🤷🏻♀️

This movie is “predictable” because it literally changed the entire genre of horror movies. It took horror movies from “dumb slasher” into the meta, definitely look into video essay that talk more about this movie it’s super interesting and has so much back story to it!
When Billy crawled up the bed at her and she says omg she was seeing the blackest eyes the Devils eyes like in Halloween the intensity in his eyes he probably never looked at her that sinister way before maybe she didn't think he was capable of doing that lol

fun fact the actor who played tatum was actually able to go through the cat door. ALSO MAJOR QUESTION, what if sydney figured out about billy about the phone call at the police station so everyone would think it wasn’t him (she says “oh my god” and then looking at billy in his face as if she figured it out) but as soon as she does ghost face appeared and stabbed billy she was mislead since it turns out it was billy was in on it aswell.

The father being missing was hinted at in the scene where Billy is talking to Sidney about the exorcist and he turns up the radio not just to prevent him to hear his conversation but to drown out any noise Stu would make when he knocks the father out before kidnapping him
The cops allow one phone call but he had to use the voice changer for the call you'd think the cops would have taken everything from him why would they let him keep that lol plus don't cops monitor those calls So they'd hear him making that call thus knowing he's the killer. Obviously the other one did the call lol. You can hear a difference when both say hello Sidney lol

Tatum is shown to have two twin beds in her bedroom, 'Cuz Kevin Williamson's original idea was to have Tatum have an Identical Twin that was out of town that would appear in Scream 2- also played by Rose McGowan and I wish they would have went thru with this!

People would still talk on the phone with a stranger these days tbh. It’s a trend to put random numbers in and text it to see if the number belongs to someone and try to have a conversation with the person
Great reaction, subbed! This is my all time favorite movie, I saw it in the theaters when I was just 2 years old (my mom was FURIOUS with my aunt) and I actually remember it. I've loved horror ever since!
I'd like to think if I were in that kitchen in the opening scene, I'd have the presence of mind to grab that flaming hot popcorn pan and use it.

I just realized (after watching many of the reactions) that when gf is talking to Casey about horror movie trivia it's a clue to who the killer is except the roles are reversed in the 1st and 2nd movies. He mentions the killer in Friday the 13 (Mrs. Voorhees sp?) since Jason doesn't show up until the sequel but in the Scream movies it is the son who is the killer getting revenge for his mother in the 1st movie and the mother who comes in the 2nd movie

Before the principal was killed when he asked the janitor if he saw something, the janitor is Wes craven the director for scream and all the Freddy Krueger movies, and he was dressed like Freddy Krueger.

@@MrParkerman6 I understand what you're saying, but that's purely subjective. Scream 5 did significantly better than Scream 3 (reception and $ wise), but there's a shit tonne of people who rate Scream 3 over 5 (myself being 1). What one lacks, the other makes up for. That's why I consider the franchise consistent. We're all not going to love the same sequels. But the fact that all of the sequels are so loved individually is what makes the franchise so consistently good. Most horror franchises truly tank. Scream is not one of them.
And I'm crossing my fingers that Scream 6 will deliver enough to make itself unique from the others. It absolutely has the potential.
