An underrated gem from my childhood. I always loved this show, it felt super unique back then and looking back on it now, I think it still is, even with so many other robot-based shows existing. The art style, Shannon's design, the way the show combines human and robot problems for Robot to face... I found myself realizing it's also got a pretty realistic depiction of the public school experience for the Weird Kids. As a Weird Kid myself, I always related really hard to Robot Jones, and as an adult I now know it was my then-undiagnosed autism. Teachers consistently misunderstand Robot and his unique needs, except for Mr. Mitchel who manages to help in that one episode thanks to his relevant expertise. I know I'm reading way too hard into this funny little old cartoon, but I think it says a lot about it that it's still so relatable after all this time--and I know it's relatable to pretty much everyone regardless of any conditions because being a teenager, and being an American middle-schooler, are just bizarre experiences for us all.

One other thing to praise about this show is its soundtrack. The mixture of synthesizers and rock gave it such “cool 80s/90s” feel. Compared to the other Cartoon Network shows of that era, there wasn’t anything quite like it. Now as an adult, I love synthpunk and electronic-rock and I think this show is partly responsible for that.
This was one of my favorite shows when it was on. I played the heck out of the Follow That Brain web game, and I just so happened to recognize the Junior voice because it was an option in a Talking Number Maze game on my school computers.
Jokes on you! Robot Jones was my first crush and I remember him very very well 💝 I watched it a lot in first grade, I actually had PU to PE/Vaccum friend recorded on a VHS for a while. Ironic since the PE episode terrified me as a kid lol. It lingered in the back of my mind for years but in middle school my interest in it reactivated. I had a printed screenshot of him in a heart shaped frame next to my bed lol. Middle schoolers are a different species. For a long time the show was actually lost media, the entire thing not having been archived properly. It’s only pretty recent that the show has been properly backed up, uploaded and archived. Great video, it’s always nice to see one of my favorite cartoons getting some appreciation. Thankfully nowadays the show has a small but very dedicated fanbase, so it’s not as forgotten as it used to be.
Robot Jones is still one of my favorite cartoon characters. I'm so glad it was rediscovered, and it's nice that there's so many people out there who have an appreciation for the show!
I've only seen the pilot episode and I thought it was hilarious and quite unique. For all the reasons you mentioned. My son was little at that time and I remember that there were a LOT of great new cartoon series then. Competition was stiff, to say the least. I think Robot Jones may have been TOO good to succeed. That happens from time to time.
Robot Jones was one of my all time favorites growing up. Main episode I could catch as a kid was the Rubix Cube one since that always got reruns when I could watch, but got lucky with the rest over time.
I remember watching the Rubix Cube episode sometime in 2005, apparently the show was still being reran at that point. I'm also surprised there's nothing citing that maybe the show got cancelled because the Principal is basically Hitler. More shows should take the Shannon approach instead of having generic popular girl who's out of the main character's league.
Robot Jones is certainly a little gem from CN that has a strong art style and characters. Another underrated show on the same network with teenage robots that definitely needs more attention is Robotomy. Robotomy has a very strong influence from the movie Superbad from it’s humor and structure. It also shares some traits with the Adult Swim show Superjail! like how both shows have similar art styles and how they tend to crank up the violence.
Its bizarre how those birds attacking the one-off bully make me think of anonymous Twitterites cancelling someone for bullying a 'differently abled person'. This show was really ahead of it's time
Robot Jones was a show I liked when it first came on. Unfortunately, the voice change for him kind of threw me off, like I know now it was because there was some kind of lawsuit with the voice to text function, but it just seemed more iconic without having addressed the issue, like "Oh, it makes him sound more human than it did before, so he'll blend into society more." Also, I remember the ending being so dirty to him, but other than that, it was a pretty good show, and I was glad to see him in that one episode of O.K. KO, since they still cared about him there.
Apparently this show was originally conceived under the premise of basically "The Terminator" meets "The Wonder Years". Oddly fitting, considering what Greg Miller had planned for the ending.
Thanks, it was super fun to revisit that long lost show! The next video drops tomorrow and is about the Garfield TV Holiday Specials. Check it out if you like lasagna!
I enjoy the way the bullies wear hats inspired by DEVO and I wonder if the lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh worked on this show at all because he's done the soundtrack to....pretty much every kids show ever.
I do not think I have seen anything about Robot Jones before. Thanks for making this video to inform people about the show because I enjoy finding out about old media and similar stuff. This video does a good job of showing what the show is about.
I loved the season one voice of robot and his parents, could not stand the second season voice and they went back a redubbed season one in it for reruns (likely there was litigation with MS) but that killed the show for me.
Oh man I remember watching this show a lot (especially the pilot) and I think the main thing that turned me off from the show near the end was the replacement of the text-to-speech voice with an actual voice actor. I think that that voice actor did fine, but there was still charm in that robotic voice for a character. Also I think if something’s gonna end, it should go out on a high note, which this short-lived show did. It shouldn’t overstay its welcome like SpongeBob after the first movie in my opinion. Overall, an entertaining and thoughtful analysis on a truly underrated show.
Here's my cast for a Robot Jones reboot/revival, noting I would move forward 30 years: Robot Jones - Jason Statham (action fantasy sequences) and Corey Taylor (main voice: language warning) Socks - Bradley Cooper Cubey - Benedict Cumberbatch Mitch - Ed Harris Shannon - Kate Upton (action fantasy sequences) and Grey Delisle (main voice) Pam - Margot Robbie Stacy - Tara Strong The Yogmans - Josh Peck and Steve Buscemi I should also mention that older Robot is not entirely a 100% reliable narrator about his younger years.
@@ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose That's fantastic to hear - thank you very much. At the least, I always had Corey Taylor as a perfect fit for a frustrated Robot in his early 40s (note some Slipknot and Stone Sour tracks could describe Robot's life), and Statham would be for his tough guy/cool kid fantasies (Upton, logically, is Shannon in these, before they are interrupted - much to Robot's disgust). Further, I also have two of the original cast return, while Buscemi works for the Yogmans in their 40s (I have them repossessing cars for a living for some reason), and Cooper gives off the vibe of Socks being the friend who would be telling Robot "Screw life's problems, let's have a beer."
WHTRJ has to be the most underrated CN classic. Really need to give you credit for reminding me of this long-lost nostalgic road that I've neglected going down, for so long. Enjoy my sub for this, my friend. You earned it.
I’m really glad it brought back some good memories for you! I’ve got some videos in the works that hopefully will give you those same sentimental feelings again.
I still remember this she fondly even 22 years later as I was a preteen, and I was my little brother at the time as late as 11 o’clock on Friday nights that’s how iconic the show was despite not being popular as I kind of think of it as like a precursor to nickelodeon my life as a teen and dad show was pretty good too, and like Roma Jones wasn’t very popular either time as I saw a trench thousand and everything was kind of like all about like futuristic and all robots being sentient and even AI I mean, even hearing Jones voice actually voiced by a computer that does the whole speech thing that was from music wow it’s like a computer talk and I remember in my keyboarding class in high school my teacher well we didn’t do the voice thing, but she would text us in class with her own stationary computers pretty much the same room and she would know what we were doing, and that was crazy for me in my teens as the state of nowadays now everything is accessible on Weather. It’s pretty much GPT or even AI and all that yeah that’s accessible more than ever. I believe that is kind of like, the quality control even if it doesn’t seem like it can transcend pretty much animation even if it has the 80s look of school rug which I still love because I used to watch a lot of that in middle school as part of seventh grade I believe it was pretty good to see that kind of stuff stuff because I never grew up in the 70s or 80s and seen that now it’s like wow and she was so different back in those decades and I loved the heck out of it.
you can tell you watch too much robot jones when that "mall of the world" scene in mitches vs the machines just sounds like robot jones having a family reunion lol
@@dragonchampionacheron1064 I’m actually working on a collective “kids” video including the underrated Tom & Jerry Kids, Flintstones Kids, Muppet Babies…lots of stuff coming up!
small note but i feel like, if it was on nick instead, it would've done a bit better, idk it just seems like it would fit it art wise a lot better with shows like rugratz and others on there.
_Whatever Happened to Robot Jones_ is elaborate enough with its story, showing they are a series of misadventures the kids understand with adult humor in mind, and is very self-explanatory--whatever happens to Robot Jones usually happens; it's an irony joke. For the show heavily influencing its set. this wouldn't be unprecedent for David Stern and Greg Miller to collect inspiration from other mediums and parody those within this show to reflect this era. One such case might be in the title of which could be parodying the BBC's "Whatever Happened To the Likely Lads" a sequel show to the discontinued _Likely Lads_ series, which reunites its titular pair of rather friends that step into innocent mischief. In synopsis, the parallels between this show's characters and Robot Jones couldn't more clear with Jones working to coexist with humans and be like them. Additionally, to fully understand the cancellation of Whatever Happened to Robot Jones, it has more to do with its airing rather than animation style and popularity. Evidently Sheep in the Big City and Cow and Chicken has designs roughly similar to Robot's but were popular overall--had Robot Jones aired earlier along with them then probably his show might have fell on good terms, it's pilot shot off around the time Spongebob, Ed Edd n' Eddy, The Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Jackie Chan, and Grim Adventures airing, coupled with the two-year hiatus given by network executives, gave the former leeway in placing their marks on television. Moreover was its sensation further sabotaged by competing against these soon to be titans. But then to--later in 2002--compete against the likes of Kim Possible, The Proud Family, Teen Titans, The Weekenders, Time Squad, and Codename: Kids Next Door, any attempt for this nuance of '70s and '80s memorabilia couldn't built under pretense. Perhaps, if Greg Miller pitched his show earlier in the '90s, this show might have stood a chance against its counterparts. Cause I know enjoyed it...would've been nice to hear more of Rip Taylor as McMcMc.
Request: talk about making fiends and Sunday pants and sheep in the big city and nightmare Ned and kitty bobo show and it’s such a beautiful day by don hertzfeldt in another video Edit: I forgot vib-ribbon and superjail and little inferno and chalkzone and pinwheel and the misfortune of being Ned

It doesn't matter how good other shows can be. Regular Show may have the best potential, Ben 10 may have the best epicness and Marvel What if... may have the best animation. But for me, Ed, Edd n' Eddy will always be my all time favourite show. And i wish it could come back one dsy so season 6 can be completed or Peach Creek was an official sequel.
Ed, Edd, & Eddy is one of my all-time favorites! Although we probably will never see a revival, I’m glad we got a wonderful send off with Ed, Edd & Eddy’s Big Picture Show.
@@ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose i more than agree. Ed, Edd n' Eddy's Big Picture Show is the best movie ever and best series finale ever. Though i still wish season 6 could've been complete.
Actually the original voice of robot jones wasn't windows text to speech. It was actually Apple Macintosh's Macintalk text to speech program. Other than that flub, great review
if robot jones got the proper attention like steven universe and other cartoons had it would be at most rivaling spongebob and im serious about that, maybe not completely but they would be close. edit:: maybe not like as good as spongebob but it would definitely be good
In an alternate universe, Robot Jones went on for over ten seasons and multiple movies and I made a video about the cult favorite SpongeBob SquarePants.
This show, along with Time Squad, Cyber Chase, Megas XLR, Grim and Evil, and Pokemon are among some of my earliest memories as far as entertainment goes. I remember liking all 5 quite a bit and dropping everything I was doing to catch episodes whenever they'd flash. Tbfh, I don't think the show's failure had anything to do with itself and more the incompetency at those who marketed it. As a kid I *always* knew when Dexter and SpongeBob would be on, but Robot was always of a "maybe, maybe not" type deal. It was a show I *wanted* to watch but never could because of how they hardly advertised or even promoted it. Looking at the other shows my sister and I loved back then but inexplicably found off the air mere months later, all share the common thread of being unfavorites among the network brass. Time Squad hardly ever showed in promos, Robot would air late, while Megas would always air far too early for the majority of people to catch. It really just reads as the executives trying to tank these shows because they didn't dig them.
No. "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" won. It didn't become "Grim and Evil" until after the contest. There was even a skit where Hector was talking about how they won, and Grim says "No. Actually, 'I' won, along with Billy and Mandy".

It's a definite underground classic. If you haven't watched the full series yet, you're in for a treat!
Bro I always thought this show came out around 1993-1995,didn't expect it to come out in 2002,the show really is underrated and deserved more love
It seems like it could have come out of any decade!
i remember this show. i used to sing the theme song.. and drew a lot of the robot in my drawing book :) i loved it so much!!!!
Robot Jones was one of my all time favorites growing up. Main episode I could catch as a kid was the Rubix Cube one since that always got reruns when I could watch, but got lucky with the rest over time.
It's an easy show to sit down and watch! Got to keep on cubin...
Totally agree about Shannon, she’s the best! And such a unique character design.
I agree. This show is so underrated.
💯👍🤖
Robot Jones is certainly a little gem from CN that has a strong art style and characters. Another underrated show on the same network with teenage robots that definitely needs more attention is Robotomy. Robotomy has a very strong influence from the movie Superbad from it’s humor and structure. It also shares some traits with the Adult Swim show Superjail! like how both shows have similar art styles and how they tend to crank up the violence.
Two shows I haven't heard of. I'll definitely have to give them a watch!
Me and my brother actually followed this show on it's different time slots. It's a gem
Now that’s dedication!
Its bizarre how those birds attacking the one-off bully make me think of anonymous Twitterites cancelling someone for bullying a 'differently abled person'.
This show was really ahead of it's time
It was a great show and that's one of my favorite "What the" moments!
Listen. The "Nudist and Mr Pendleton" has lived in my head for over 20 years... too good!
A really great, funny, and flat out cool original song!
@@ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose absolutely! Sounded like it was right out of the psychedelic rock era! Done so perfectly!
THIS SHOW IS A MASTERPICE! but you might burn me at the stake ofer this but i like the bobby block voice more.
I like both voices, so you'll hear no disagreement from me!
@@ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose thanks for not wanting to kill me!
I like how Robot jones art style feels old school 1970
I'd love to see more cartoons with that look!
That OK KO special brought back a lot of characters from obscurity. It sure was great to see. And with his original voice to boot!
Apparently this show was originally conceived under the premise of basically "The Terminator" meets "The Wonder Years".
Oddly fitting, considering what Greg Miller had planned for the ending.
Funny enough, the original ending of the series was supposed to be Robot Jones leading a robot army to overthrow Earth!
@@ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose Yup! Although I can't help but wonder if he would've spared his friends.
I remember liking this show too! 🇺🇸💐
Good video, Mister! 🇺🇸💐
Thanks, it was super fun to revisit that long lost show! The next video drops tomorrow and is about the Garfield TV Holiday Specials. Check it out if you like lasagna!
I agree with you I think it’s the best cn show ever to exist
I enjoy the way the bullies wear hats inspired by DEVO and I wonder if the lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh worked on this show at all because he's done the soundtrack to....pretty much every kids show ever.
I'm not sure if he did. It would be a fun nod to him if that's the case!
I do not think I have seen anything about Robot Jones before. Thanks for making this video to inform people about the show because I enjoy finding out about old media and similar stuff. This video does a good job of showing what the show is about.
Happy to oblige! Here's to hoping my other current and future videos might do the same for you!
Great narration and analysis of the show! I loved this cartoon has a kid and have completed forgotten about it. guess I will watch it again soon XD
Very kind of you to say! And I can attest it is worthy of a re-watch! Also, new video releasing at noon tomorrow, so stay tuned 👀
I can’t believe this show doesn’t get any attention. At least a DVD release.
Physical media of the show WOULD be nice.
I loved the season one voice of robot and his parents, could not stand the second season voice and they went back a redubbed season one in it for reruns (likely there was litigation with MS) but that killed the show for me.
It definitely was a big adjustment, I totally get where you're coming from.
request: do a video where you talk about sheep in the big city
It's on the list! Have a few more videos coming out before that one.
@@ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose noice! also i have a request about making fiends and sunday pants and nightmare ned
Thank you! And yes, sometimes it’s better to burn out too soon than too late.
Here's my cast for a Robot Jones reboot/revival, noting I would move forward 30 years:
Robot Jones - Jason Statham (action fantasy sequences) and Corey Taylor (main voice: language warning)
Socks - Bradley Cooper
Cubey - Benedict Cumberbatch
Mitch - Ed Harris
Shannon - Kate Upton (action fantasy sequences) and Grey Delisle (main voice)
Pam - Margot Robbie
Stacy - Tara Strong
The Yogmans - Josh Peck and Steve Buscemi
I should also mention that older Robot is not entirely a 100% reliable narrator about his younger years.
I LOVE it!
I watched it today and it’s actually amazing. I love it….
It's SO good, right? Glad you found it enjoyable!
THIS SHOW IS SO UNDERRATED I RLLY HOPE THT CN PICKS IT BACK UP

WHTRJ has to be the most underrated CN classic. Really need to give you credit for reminding me of this long-lost nostalgic road that I've neglected going down, for so long. Enjoy my sub for this, my friend. You earned it.
I’m really glad it brought back some good memories for you! I’ve got some videos in the works that hopefully will give you those same sentimental feelings again.
@@ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose I'll be waiting! Patiently, of course. Take all the time you need.
It definitely brings people back to a simpler time!
Robot jones came out 2002 along with kids next door that's was cartoon network 10th anniversary that year

I'd never heard of the Likely Lads, I'll have to check it out. And yes, maybe if it had aired in a different era it might have taken off!

This shows' title is basically this video's title. They predicted the future.
Just as the prophecy foretold...
It doesn't matter how good other shows can be. Regular Show may have the best potential, Ben 10 may have the best epicness and Marvel What if... may have the best animation. But for me, Ed, Edd n' Eddy will always be my all time favourite show. And i wish it could come back one dsy so season 6 can be completed or Peach Creek was an official sequel.

if robot jones got the proper attention like steven universe and other cartoons had it would be at most rivaling spongebob and im serious about that, maybe not completely but they would be close.
edit:: maybe not like as good as spongebob but it would definitely be good
In an alternate universe, Robot Jones went on for over ten seasons and multiple movies and I made a video about the cult favorite SpongeBob SquarePants.
I LOVE the Rubix cube episode.
Wow I didn't even know the show even existed
Welcome to the small club of people that do!
Way better than MGPAM which has the exact same premise with different settings
WHTRJ for a new generation, I suppose!

No. "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" won. It didn't become "Grim and Evil" until after the contest. There was even a skit where Hector was talking about how they won, and Grim says "No. Actually, 'I' won, along with Billy and Mandy".
Sounds like it was my mistake then!
Robot Jones and Dexter's Lab were my favorite. The Bobby Block dub should have never happened.
