Mr Dan, You are amazing teacher and player. Your bass lessons are very much useful in real time performances. Thank you very muich.
My pleasure! Thanks.
You got me totally hooked up. Best hints to apply theory to bass in youtube.
Thanks, Marcos.
You all probably already know this, but I learned the modes by using the mnemonic device _ I Don't Play Loud Music After Lunch.
Another one - I Don’t Particularly Like Modes A Lot
@@mattmartino4907 Haha That's the one which got my brain to remember the damned order. Finally!
@@martinheath5947 happy to help!
Thank you for this lessons
🙏
As bass players, we should be able to play the melodies. It will open your ears to enhanced bass lines and soloing.
Thank you Dan, it is amazing how many hours of practice you can get from a 10 min video lesson.
It's finally clicked! I'm an absolute novice at theory but this lesson has opened a door for me. I can't wait to get some scales learnt. Thanks Dan!
Great to hear it! It’s not that bad once you learn a few things.
And another great lesson, thank you so much!
Cheers, Martin!
Dan awesome bass lines
Hi Dan, great theory instructions to improve my bass playing skills, I play just for fun and have good time . Thanks for the lesson!
Thanks. Keep having fun!
Dan it's an inspiration to watch, /hear you play at the start of the lesson.
Thanks, William. I play things related to the lesson so hopefully you can use it for your playing too.
My gratitude for this video. The more I watch it, the more I understand it!! Excellent!!!!
🙏
Hi Dan, thank you for another great lesson. I enjoyed the tasty playing at the start. Before watching I thought you might touch on what you mentioned at the end; having a choice of modes to play over the same chord. I'd love to see how you approach that, perhaps in another video, if you're inclined to do so. Thanks again!
Yes, I'd like to hear more too about using modes that go outside the key signature.
Yes - I probably will tackle that some time!
Another Grr8 lesson Dan!
Awesome!
🙏👍
Great lesson, keep up the great work. Learning patterns in music and different modes, opens up your understanding and you can play nearly anything. I love that you focus on this as opposed to gimmicks.
Thanks very much. I’d rather focus on the music! 🙏👍
Great lesson, thanks Dan.
Beautiful melody Dan I jammed along to this one on guitar gonna practice on the bass now thank you .
You just cleared up something for me that I've probably heard a thousand times but this time, it stuck! You made it a lot easier to digest and put into practice. Thanks.
Great stuff! Thanks for the comment. 🙏🙏👍
very good video I learn easily from you Dan
Mark Smith is easy to learn from too
thanks
🙏🙏
Thanks!
This is brilliant mate, just what I was looking for as a beginner jazz bassist
Thanks! Good to hear.
Top marks again Dan, great delivery. Do you have any words of wisdom on fretless, you can never know enough - cheers buddy
Thanks, Dave! I’ve actually got a few fretless lessons on the channel if you give that a search.
Awesome Dan this was a great lesson on creating your own basslines! I am a new subscriber
Thanks very much!
Thank you Dan,that was a great teaching video.I don't suppose you have the tabs for those beuitful bass lines that you played over that piece of music .I have just begun practicing modes from your videos and to see how you incorporated them would be really helpful. Thanks once again.
Thanks very much! I don’t - sorry - because they’re mostly made up on the spot. I do have a few other mode videos you can check (do a search on my site).
nice bass tutorial oscar dela hoya.
Thank you, Pol Pot.
Ah! So that's what my music teacher was trying to tell me 25 years ago! 😅 Thank you so much Dan - so well explained. I'm loving your videos. Can you explain this though- I know it does sound good when I play notes that are in they key but not in the chord, but why?! E.g. if we're playing in the key of G and the guitar is playing Bm, why does it not clash when I play a C note?
Thanks! Chord tones are great but so are scale tones. They can be used in conjunction or separately. I find that using notes from a scale can result in a melodic bass line. But even chromatic notes outside of the key sound good. So there are no ‘wrong’ notes!
@@OnlineBassCourses okay that makes sense - so the scale notes are options that can make bass lines more interesting, but the chord notes are also an option - it's what's right for the song. Correct? Thank you!
@@s0091986 yes. Ultimately, I don’t think about any of that stuff when playing (although I find it useful when teaching and explaining these things). It’s all about what sounds good and then you learn what you like as you go. Plus you hear it in bass lines you figure out by ear.
aarg! Another lesson about modes and I STILL can't grasp it. (frustrated face emoji) . in my mind, there are only 2 scales i need to learn, major and minor and they work for any major or minor chords. if the key and chord is G i can play my g major scale. if the next chord in the song is Am, I move to my minor scale with A as the root , same scale, different root for a Bmin chord. but my basic scale notes are wrong compared to your Dorian and Phrygian. Is my thinking that I can play just my minor and major scales basically over anything wrong? I had a teacher once that told me calculus is hard but one day a light bulb goes on and it all makes sense. I just have not had that day for modes...
I think it sounds a bit wrong to me a Frank… try these lessons:

Can you explain what the numbers mean I understand the red is the root note but confused if you are supposed to be following the numbers in order of playing for the black circle numbers?
the black dots represent other notes in the given scale.
Hi, in this specific context, the numbers within the black circles represent intervals (in other videos Dan also uses them to represent finger numbers). For example, in the Am7 arpeggio at 2:52, "3b" represents the flat 3rd, "p5" the perfect fifth and "b7" it's the flat seventh. In the interval notation, each note is relative to the major scale starting at the same root, so coming back to the Am7 example, "3b" means "take the 3rd degree from A major scale (which is C#) and flatten it".
See below for very good answers! 🙏🙏
