    Great video Dan. Please could you do a video on playing behind, on or ahead of the beat and the relative merits of each or not as the case may be. You are one of the best bass educators on the net - keep up the good work.

    Great Q&A Dan. I fully agree with sessions like this. There’s a lot of people out there picking up a bass for the first time and need to ask questions that they we’re afraid to ask.
    Well ask away guys, this is the place. Any knowledge gained is a good thing. Learn from the best that way you know it’s sound advice. 👍

    this was a minor note in video for you, but was a lightbulb moment for me. i have been having trouble memorizing 1 position up from the 2nd finger pentatonic scale. i didn't realize that second position of the minor pentatonic scale was THE SAME as one of the positions for the major pentatonic scales.

    • @OnlineBassCourses
      @OnlineBassCourses  4 месяца назад

      Yes, that’s a big one when you get it! Minor and major scales are related which is why that’s the case. It makes learning those scales so much easier…

  • @unclemick-synths
    @unclemick-synths Год назад +2

    2:59 this is sooo important regardless of instrument. Learning the formula for each scale and mode means never having to waste money on one of those "all the scales in all the keys" books. Same for chords.

    • @unclemick-synths
      @unclemick-synths Год назад +1

      @@JM-pu8pl I don't understand why those books even exist. I can't imagine being in need of notation or tab to be able to play a scale or a chord.
      Edit: in retrospect my comment sounds arrogant but IMO the correct way to learn scales and chords is by formula e.g. the major 7th chord is 1 3 5 7, the major scale is tone tone semitone tone tone tone semitone (tone = whole step, semitone = half step).

    Any advice on hunting for a good deal on a vintage bass

    • @OnlineBassCourses
      @OnlineBassCourses  Год назад +1

      Definitely to play one as they all feel different. Check the truss rod for movement. Depends what vintage. If you want a good playing bass, you can do without certain things. If you want an investment, check all parts see original.
      Buy from a reputable seller.
      Be prepared to spend decent money!

      You could use Moises to isolate the bass or a slowdown software. Take it section by section and figure out the key/chords. Sounds to me like it follows the guitar a lot. Cool song by the way! I can hear an inversion in there. Once you figure out the key, you can totally decipher the bad notes pretty easily. (Ok maybe only easily if you figure out a lot of songs by ear…).

    I've got a question! What do people use compression pedals for, particularly in live situations? I play a Fender Jazz bass and find that when I play on G string (especially as I move up the fret board), the highs are loud without much low end. Is something compression pedals help with? I play in a live band.

    • @montyburns4831
      @montyburns4831 Год назад +3

      Hi Jenn. Compression can be used for tone shaping and smoothing out inconsistency like the ones you're experiencing. It can also be used to control or eliminate extraneous noise, this is more commonly called limiting. For managing issues like the one you describe a mix of eq and multi band compression can work wonders but it's a whole new techy rabbit hole to go down. Most of these issues can be managed with grinding away at your fundamental technique and I think this is why actual, proper pros like Dan often eschew compression. FWIW I use a TCe Spectracomp, I've modified one of their compression/expander templates to fine tune my tone and to 'enrich' the harmonics before it goes into my T21 VT Bass preamp. This gives a nice warm, even, pseudo tube sound through my little class d amp and/or house pa.

    • @OnlineBassCourses
      @OnlineBassCourses  Год назад +1

      Hi Jenn. Monty’s answer below is excellent. I’d definitely focus on technique first. Sometimes Fenders have dead spots so, if you believe there’s no issue with regards your technique, it could be worth getting the bass professionally set up.
      Highs and lows are mainly controlled by EQ but I’d work on producing a tone you like from your instrument plus your hands. I hope that helps…
