There are more than a few identifiable, potentially ban-worthy threats in Generation V OU: Latios, Magic Guard, Reuniclus, Thundurus-T, Keldeo, Spikes, Scald... Rattling off a list is easy, but more difficult is determining what to suspect, in what order, and why. I want to explore what I will call "convergent brokenness" - i.e., similar threats in the metagame which accentuate each other's strengths by leveraging and exploiting a limited number of viable checks. In response to convergent brokenness in a metagame, it may be wisest to suspect the most broken threats in a tier first - even if all our acknowledged, listed threats eventually get banned. This is an inherent limitation of attempting to corral a bunch of threats into a single-file line for suspect testing. There is value in suspecting the most broken threats first, as it reduces the likelihood of engaging in unbanning no longer broken Pokemon in the future, but perhaps I am placing undue weight on this factor alone. Speaking of undue weight, I, candidly, may not care enough that some broken Pokemon keep the tier balance sand castle from crashing down, as it were. My primary goal is arriving at a healthy metagame regardless of the number of steps it takes. As stated in the video at 11m 47s, "Latios's biggest strength is enabling Alakazam and Reuniclus." Reuniclus and Latios, among other options, overload common metagame Psychic checks like Tyranitar. Sure enough, against common Psyspam Sand teams, one of the tier's premier archetypes, the Psychic check's - often Tyranitar's - role of navigating Latios/Alakazam/Reuniclus is overloaded and exploited by this team design, as these Pokemon learn Water-, Fighting-, and Bug-type coverage moves which help wear down common checks for themselves and each other. However, Spikes, Latios, Reuniclus, and Magic Guard are common elements of Psyspam Sand - all of which could, even individually, be suspect- or ban-worthy. Admittedly, Reuniclus is not merely broken on Sand, given that Hail, Clefable, etc. viably support Reuniclus as well. But notice that a pattern emerges of other Spikes, passive damage, and Magic Guard Pokemon (all potentially suspect- or ban-worthy features of the tier) contributing toward furthering Reuniclus's unhealthy game plan. Likewise, Latios, not only broken on Sand, is a staple of the tier's other strongest team archetypes, Rain and Hyper Offense, as well. Latios also works best in conjunction with Spikes, Magic Guard, passive damage, Thundurus-T, Keldeo, etc. (again, all potentially over-centralizing aspects of the meta) in order to shine. It should be clear at this point that my claim is Latios is an unhealthier presence in BW OU than Reuniclus. They are, among other threats, convergently broken and, therefore, we ought to suspect the most apparently broken aspects of the tier first. I can already anticipate the criticism that this perspective stymies meaningful progress in the metagame. I'm willing to be corrected here and am open to opposing input, but, at this moment, while I am convinced Reuniclus is unhealthy for BW OU, I'm not convinced that it isn't, on some level, the product of other, unhealthier forces. I'm not opposed to suspecting or even banning Reuniclus, but it might be best to suspect the most broken threats prior to doing so. tl;dr if we can agree Reuniclus is unhealthy and thus deserving of suspect testing, can we agree more unhealthy presences in the metagame are, therefore, more deserving of suspect testing?
I love that you brought up Sableye to act as a point for saying that Reuniclus is a problem. Damn Sableye is an otherwise awful Pokemon that just so happens to beat some Reuniclus sets.

I was astonished to see they actually managed to make any tiering decision, much less a GOOD one when they banned cloy, here's hoping that continues with reuniclus.
Personally, I kind of want to see what would happen to the meta if spikes itself were banned. Everything seems to revolve around Spikes (Latios, Excadrill, Magic Guard Pokemon, Thunderus-T) and more. So banning Spikes literally makes the most sense. You would be able to have more pokemon in the tier because a lot of these other pokemon would more manageable and whatever is broken past Spikes you can look at that. Hazards have always been stupid in competitive since their introduction. People are literally claiming that Skarmory is better than Tyranitar in Gen 3 despite Sandstorm solely because Spikes are that stupid to deal with. Gen 4 you have some people even wanting Clefable banned because it ignores hazards. People complaining about HDB in Gen 8 solely because they can't use Rocks and Spikes to break everything because the broken shit isn't getting worn down by hazards.
Been discussed already, and it isnt going to happen. Spikes, and hazards in general, are just well liked in singles to punish switching and keeping games going at a good pace. Doubly so in gens where Regen and Pivot moves exist. So hazard immunity can get lot of criticisms. Gen 8 has and continues to gets a decent amount of flak for long turn count games and hazard immune pivots.
@@theimpersonator7086 The thing is everything is linking back to hazards. I understand that its more than likely very improbable to ban Spikes but since almost if not every problem relating to Gen 5 is because of hazards and pokemon not being able to switch in safely because of them. I just think that Spikes as a whole is the issue. It would 100% completely warp the entire meta game but a lot of stupid broken stuff would not be broken anymore because they're not taking insane residual damage for coming in. There's 2 options where this stuff might go. Option 1: Keep Spikes and start going through the list of bans. First Reuniclus, then Thunderus-T (Volcarona potentially might need to get looked at I'm not sure), then potentially Latios/Sand Force Excadrill, Keldeo, potentially Alakazam (throughout the span of years of course) and hope the meta game stabilizes with enough bans. Option 2: Ban Spikes, bring back Deoxys-D for a retest and potentially Deoxys-S depending, and keep every other pokemon that is up for a ban and start looking at problematic pokemon that are broken even with no Spikes. Banning Spikes seems extreme and there's no doubt it would completely shake up the meta game to its core but since pokemon are only broken because they are getting worn down too quickly it just makes the most sense. It would create longer games but it would make games more consistent which is what Pokemon player generally wants leaning into more defense. I like more offense personally because I do not want to play pokemon games that last like 30 minutes because I have better things to be doing and I just wanna play a few games. But purely from a balance perspective it would fix more things.
@@yourdagan Skarmory's defensive profile coupled with Spikes is what makes it so powerful. It generates insane offense with insane defense. Tyranitar's sandstream is meta game defining 100%. But just as crucially you need Spikes and the single best spiker is Skarmory by a massive margin. The argument really comes down to what is better Spikes vs Sandstorm and honestly you could swap Tyranitar or Skarmory at #1 and it wouldn't hold too much contention but the fact that its even being discussed at all compared to Tyranitar just being plainly #1 from before shows how big of an impact Skarmory and its spiking has been in Gen 3 OU completely reshaping the game in Gen 3 OU because its so strong just like Sandstorm.
dumb thought but why not worry seed on ferro or celebi if you want an extremely specific reuniclus answer that can't be as easily PP stalled as perish song or skill swap...? (im not advocating for it but if PP is really an issue for the hyper-specific reuniclus answers then this would be a solution without that problem... or at least make the games go even longer lmao)
because you then waste a moveslot that ferro really needs to cover other mons. And even then, ferro can just switch out (unfortunately not a permanent status).
Always thought it’s wild how gen 5 remains an unstable mess, so much jank and broken aspects accepted at face value, even gen 9 has settled into a more stable meta at this stage which is mad when you think of the mental power creep and Tera as an (unbanned) concept. It is somehow a more fulfilling competitive experience than current gen 5, even post Cloyster ban. Please make it make sense. Pure ineptitude at this stage, every other meta is better ran than this. Power creep as an excuse can only go so far, gens 6, 7 and 9 are all settled meta and they were also power crept messes initially!

Have you considered that I really like reuniclus and don't want to see it go? That should count for something
For reference, quixotic is pronounced “quicks-sah-tick.” I loved Don Quixote when I read it, so I made sure to learn how to how to say the word named after him.
another day another storm another rain double (meaning)
I'm only now discovering that BKC is the one that comes up with the film references and jokes in the FalseSwipeGaming videos because of the intro mentioning Mizoguchi lol
Story of the Last Chrysanthemums, Street of Shame, A Geisha, Women of the Night, Life of Oharu, Crucified Lovers, and so many others ugh he's so great
@@BKCplaysPokemon One of the GOATs. So hard to pick a favorite but Sansho the Bailiff is just too beautiful. And by the way, keep up with the good work!
is this guy some kinda failed film student
I was astonished to see they actually managed to make any tiering decision, much less a GOOD one when they banned cloy, here's hoping that continues with reuniclus.
I wonder how often bkc rants about gen 5 Ou to people IRL
It's not Spikes, it's Skarmory's defensive profile. Every other Spikes user is easier to faint.
Shoutouts to Finch for opening back up the thread, job isn’t done yet
dumb thought but why not worry seed on ferro or celebi if you want an extremely specific reuniclus answer that can't be as easily PP stalled as perish song or skill swap...?
(im not advocating for it but if PP is really an issue for the hyper-specific reuniclus answers then this would be a solution without that problem... or at least make the games go even longer lmao)
because you then waste a moveslot that ferro really needs to cover other mons. And even then, ferro can just switch out (unfortunately not a permanent status).
One of the best intros ever
I was pissed at this video because my second favorite Pokemon is Reuniclus only behind Pawniyard.
Then I realized that I don’t play Showdown 🤷♂️
Could u make a video on why rain is fucking dead? Or is it just reuinuclus?
Gen 5 ou should pull a dlc or new gen and unban all the not egregious shit to see where the tier goes. Btw bro got mad romantical for the intro.
For whatever reason we pronounce quixotic like a native English word (quick-sotic) even though we don't for Quixote
Hey, bkc, any chance you could pass me a bw ou team?
Truthfully, if you're playing gen 5, you aren't there to have a healthy meta.
I'm not claiming to have knowledge on the Gen 5 meta, but from what I hear it's way more balanced in the lower tiers (not a high bar)
@@rjante2236Most gens are like this. OU has a different standard and is under more scrutiny than any of the other meta games.
Reuniclus was a big reason why i never played gen 5 OU. thank you for this
The intro was absolute kino
"Quixotic" is pronounced like 'exotic' but with 'quick' instead of 'egg'
goated intro
Already over a decade of me thinking blob should be banned :/
Quixotic comes from Don Quixote iirc, so just pronounce it like you would the name
I'm starting a motion to rename it Rainiclus because of how it rains on your parade
13:03 Double regenerator vs double magic guard having 344 turn match . Sounds extremely unfun.
Ban latios
Huh. It's almost like banning the best physical setup sweeper caused other threats to become more dominant.
How about unbanning some thing from ubers and see what happens
“Here the fuck is why”
????
if you think it's broken remind yourself it does have to hit focus blast
As a person who doesnt play gen 5 ou i think you shouldnt ban reuniclus because hes just a funny little blob guy that did nothing wrong.
YES THE SUSPECT TEST HAPPENED WE DID IT
The last of romantic men...
BKC
You know what could help against ruiniclus? Cloyster
