What I like most about this is how it not only respects Nightcrawlers beliefs in the Lord, but also brings forward the negative things people have done too.
Nightcrawler isn't dismissive when Logan calls out all the bad things, but rather acknowledges it and how he felt but he chooses to be better and set the better example.

@@asuas3115 I agree. It appears to me that church goers often conveniently (and completely) forget about Scriptures like Matthew 7:1 and Luke 6:24, which basically say the same thing (don't go judging others and calling them sinners when you're just as much a sinner as they are). Those are two of my favorite Scriptures because they remind me that it's all well and good that I'm a man of faith, but shoving it on others and acting like I'm better than them for having faith is not acceptable. This is why Christians have a bad reputation with secular folks, because we often bring it on ourselves by being more judgmental and closed minded than we're supposed to be and why I don't go to church, because that mentality really bothers me and I'd rather avoid it to maintain my sanity.

  • @Dalton_Boardman2000

I'm an atheist but that didn't get in the way of me enjoying the heck out of this episode. Nightcrawler is such a fascinating character. An unholy looking man who found comfort with himself through faith despite others of the same beliefs hating him for his appearance and abilities. I appreciate how nuanced it was, especially for the 90s. Believing in the same God didn't make the others justified in their prejudice. All men and women alike are capable of being the monsters they think they're fighting against no matter what they believe in. I also LOVE how he lightened Wolverine's bitterness. Logan has been delt a bad hand but Nightcrawler made it possible for him to finally have a moment of peace and come to appreciate life in a more positive way.

what made this genius is that Kurt wasn't doing what most modern Christians think is going to help someone (e.g. "if you don't get right, you're going to hell!"). in fact, when Logan shows resistance, Kurt never even chastises him-- he shows understanding and patience, and only ever asks Logan to give it a try on his own terms, when HE'S ready. that was likely what led Logan to do exactly that.
it would absolutely be shown on TV today. it's not shoving faith in your face, it's not begging you to convert, it's just showing you what "good faith" (in EVERY sense of the word) can do. when Logan viewed Kurt's faith IN good faith, it allowed him some comfort in a world where such a thing is scarce and always has been for him.

You saying “most modern christians” is just from your own experience, not the full truth. The type of religious beliefs you speak of is simply a toxic believer, which is found in all religions, however you’d mostly see it in islam as evidenced by the influx of religious motivated terrorist attacks.

Goes to show that faith is what matters most, as well as acts. If the faith is not there, the acts are meaningless. Even as an atheist I love that ending with Logan. Kurt's also been one of my favorites forever, for his steadfastness and endurance in the face of what life has thrown at him. Plenty of people find other ways of being at peace or finding meaning in life without religion, but it's clear that for Logan - someone who actively rejects the things he wants in life - this is something he really wants. He just needed someone to show up who was just like him but hadn't given up.

I think this scene shows why Wolverine and Nightcrawler are such good friends. His respect for Nightcrawler was due to him being a good man who rejects violence and someone Logan could come to for consul. Logan may be violent in nature, but he’s ashamed of it, due to how death he witnessed, weather by old age or his own hand. Unlike most mutants, Wolverine is not ashamed of being a mutant, just that he was a killer and wants to have life outside of the blood shed.

They allow themselves to be dictated by the outward appearance and THAT is NOT the gospel which is what makes Nightcrawlers testimony so beautiful…while everyone else looked at him and called him a demon God looked at him and called him an angel.
