    Yesterday I booked a few days in Inverness followed by a couple in Glasgow, so I'll be booking train tickets shortly.
    Found this video while researching the route and it was certainly very well presented and informative. Some train costs are eye watering.
    My wife and I shall be travelling from Newcastle and surprisingly there is a single LNER train direct from NCL all the way to Inverness, which we'll probably take. It is actually quite reasonable too.
    We'll be returning via Glasgow, so we'll no doubt be on the Scotrail service to GLQ.

    Great film. I was luck to have lived in Perth for 3 years (1967-70). Could see the Highland Main Line between a couple of houses on the other side of the road. Have had many trips that way since, and to Inverness. Great place and particularly the public lounge bar of the hotel next to the station. There's some great bus routes from Inverness to, including the one to Aberdeen. By preference have always used the slower service via Cullen the Moray Coast.

      Cheers Peter, oh Perth is lovely I think - very interesting station and plenty of opportunities for onward travel. Yes there will be a few more adventures from Scotland to come I’m sure!

      Hey thanks AFUK. As always, split ticketing is the way to do it. It shouldn’t be necessary really but the complexities of UK rail fares is mind-boggling and if you don’t know how to play it, you just end up getting ripped-off.

    • @wilsonator2008

      I remember when I went from Leeds to Leicester back in 2019 and it cost me like £20 less to split fares at Sheffield and then go down to Leicester from there.

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  3 года назад +2

      @@wilsonator2008 I’ve never done that route Josh. Is Sheffield the less-obvious but cheaper route or would it be normal to go via Doncaster, Newark?

    • @wilsonator2008
      @wilsonator2008 3 года назад +2

      The only tickets I remember being available for that day were via Sheffield and the MML. If I went XC to Chesterfield and EML from there to Leicester it would’ve cost more for basically the same trains

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  3 года назад +1

      @@wilsonator2008 yep, I guess it’s all about searching out these fares which I kind of enjoy to a point. I mean I can get from Wolverhampton to Euston for £7 with West Midlands Trains which, although it’s slower than AWC, is pretty good value tbf!

    Another really interesting video. Splitting tickets, even taking non standard routes can work out cheaper. I travelled to Leeds last week. The direct Edinburgh to Leeds LNER or XC worked out at £75. But taking Aventi West Coast to Carlise then Northern Trains to Leeds cut the cost in half. It also had the advantage of travelling down the gorgeous Settle Carlisle line.

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  3 года назад

      Hi again Patricia. Yes, I’ve never done the Settle - Carlisle line (it’s on my list). I agree, if you put the work in you can get some good deals. Not that I’m advocating ‘playing the system’ but you can also effectively employ the rail equivalent of ‘skiplagging’ to leverage lower fares (especially good tactic at Crewe this is where I’m normally continuing my journey). Rail/sail is also a good one and that’s just started up again at least to Belfast. Shrewsbury to Glasgow to Ayr to Cairnryan then over to Belfast on the ferry = £48.

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  3 года назад +2

      Yeh, Milton Keynes seems a good point for splitting tickets. Also, I’ve found Preston good for doing that when going further north. Not sure of the reasons why tbh but if it saves money 👍

  • @CongletonMike
    @CongletonMike 3 года назад +2

    I got £53 from Crewe, one change via Edinburgh. Its actually £35 with a railcard. I also managed a return for £57.90 with railcard

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  3 года назад

      Yes that’s pretty good Mike, I’m impressed! Actually the Shrewsbury to Crewe bit is probably more expensive (per mile) than any other leg when you add that bit on.

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  3 года назад +1

      Hi CT, yes split-ticketing is the way to go, is easy and gives me great satisfaction in avoiding some of the rip-off fares you *could* be sucked into paying in this country! The camera, well I’d just started using a DJI Osmo Action which I decided was slightly better than the Gopro at the time because it has a front-facing screen which is good for doing the on camera talking bits. I think the new GoPro has two screens now but is quite a bit more expensive. Hopefully, you should notice some improvement over my older videos which I just made with an old iphone6! Thanks for the comment, much appreciated 👍. Mark
