Weird Trains & a Rail Replacement Bus! Welcome to my ‘Day in the Life’ Trip to Holyhead.

  • I’m in Bangkok atm and for some reason, RUclips cannot save the description to this video! Well, I’ll try again and hopefully it works…….
I recently took a trip with Transport for Wales up to Holyhead. Nothing unusual about that you might say. But in this case, I decided to try a bit of a different route via Wrexham and Shotton which enabled me to try out one of those weird class 230 trains that operate on that route all the way up to Bidston. Not only that, but, by the time I’d reached Bangor, that was effectively the end of the line! To reach Holyhead, I had to take a rail replacement bus service!
So not really routine was it. Nevertheless, here I was making this video of which the main point was to show you guys what I get up to on a normal trip. From what I pack, to how i do it, what I do for food (hopefully) and where I stay when I need to. A bit of a day in the life really!
Join me on this trip and i’d be really interested to know what you think of these new trains and let me know what you think about Holyhead as a destination. I’d wager most people don’t stray too far from the port but if you’ve ever stayed the night, let me know how you got on. As always guys, your comments are most appreciated.
    Cheers for now!
    Mark

Really enjoy your videos Mark, and I love these type of ‘behind the scenes’ videos. Please make more of them in the future. I really like the minimal edited style as it feels more ‘realistic’ and as if I’m there with you on the trip. I always look forward to your vids as they’re informative and always have a unique twist to them compared to other travel reporters. Keep up the great work! Sending my support from Liverpool 😊

Cheers Liam, I very much appreciate the kind words and the super thanks, cheers. It’s people like you that really keep me going. Yesterday, I had to block an absolute moron on this channel who, after persistently getting things wrong, thought they were being funny but just crossed the line. I don’t block many people, most people on here (like yourself) just appreciate the channel for what it is. And like I said, it keeps me going. Cheers mate 😊👍

I love the clothes bag to keep things tidy within the main luggage - essential for packing into a rucksack. I have "Packing Cubes" which are basically the same and in three sizes. I like to call them my Clothes Tuppaware.
Shrewsbury looks lovely. At least the part where you live - and on a sunny day. I've never been!

Thank you Mark for what was an extremely interesting video! But note that the train you got between Wrexham and Shotton used to be a London Underground train! It used to run on the District Line. Now it has been fitted with batteries and now shuttles between Wrexham and Bidston (which is near Birkenhead).

Hi from Australia, Born and bred in Middlesbrough but love my life in Brisbane having lived here for 50 odd years.
For our 40th wedding anniversary we went to the UK visiting friends and rellys in Scotland and England.
For something different we caught a train to Hollyhead and caught a ferry to Dublin for a driving holiday before flying to Singapore for a few days and then back to Brisbane.
We too stayed at the Travelodge overnight and loved seeing it again on your channel.
Not brilliant but I can't remember what night we stayed but we had HUGE problrms getting dinner. The couple of pubs we went to didn't do meals so we ended at the COOP

Because of your medical condition I went to the GP and was diagnosed with planter fictitious. Now I know what it is I can deal with the attacks. I find wearing slippers in the house and avoiding walking on hard surfaces in bare feet definitely helps. The pain does make walking hard and used to make going to the Gym impossible. Thank you for drawing this condition to my attention.

I had plantar fasciitus for a while, which caused horrendous, sharp pains in my feet. It went away when I stopped wearing cheap flip flops and shoes without arch support. I bought more expensive flip flops with contoured arch support and stuck to wearing only good quality walking shoes. The pains in the soles of my feet stopped immediately.

I took a ride from Bidston to Shotton last Bank Holiday, reminded me of the back of my tranny van loaded with conduit. Rattled like BillyOh! I had a Cheshire day ranger which I thought was super value for money for a days rail riding.

Love these informal vids, Mark. More of them. Holyhead? Well I did spend the first night of my honeymoon (1st wife) there in 1976 and all I recall was a pleasant resort hotel somewhere outside the centre. Nowhere to eat? That's worrying for a main feeder port to Ireland. Wonder why. Anglesey? My last UK registered car was from there i.e. SEY 171L :-) Sold it and came to Oz (via Greece). Always had a soft spot for Anglesey. You remind me of me and my days as a Lonely Planet researcher and writer (1994-2007) when I seemed to do a lot of what you do in between your main shoots - or in my case - in between research bursts on location: finding a place to eat and sleep. I relax and smile a lot when I watch your adventures. Don't stop. Paul in Oz.

Really enjoyed the 'behind the scenes' video. As regards the day and what's coming up next I had a sense of deja vu. Last June I travelled from Nottingham to Holyhead, staying in the Travelodge and got something from the Chinese takeaway/chip shop. Early morning ferry to Dublin to sample its delights and a late evening flight back to East Midlands.
To add to things, last week I had a day out in Shrewsbury sampling some of the Good Beer Guide pubs!

@LetsMakeaTrip you will also find that in the majority of cases that they leave the under entrance wheelchair lift in and leave the front seats by the door as " magic " seats for a wheelchair. ( easily removed). I hated those under floor lifts as they rattled and banged whilst driving.. also the vehicles will have been maintained to the nth degree but will have covered well over a million miles on nasty express work.

Another interesting broadcast. I was especially interested in your walking route to Shrewsbury Station. In 2019 I moved from Kent to Welshpool and quickly discovered the joys of nearby Shrewsbury which is probably my favourite town in the UK. Neighbours from hell forced me out of Welshpool last summer and I would have loved to relocate to Shrewsbury but financial prudence dictated South Ribble instead which is fine.
Haha about the guys boarding with cans at Gobowen and a vaping trio urging a retreat into fresh air at Shotton. Experienced both more than once 😂.
The coach at Bangor looked slightly malevolent with its "horns"!
I never made it to Holyhead during my time in Welshpool although the T2 bus made a useful link between Machynlleth and Bangor (via Minffordd for Portmeirion) on the occasions when the Barmouth viaduct was closed.
If you had a bit of spare cash a trip from Holyhead to the lighthouse at South Stack may have been a worthwhile option (probably a taxi would have been necessary to and from because no bus goes all the way that I can see).

Ah Welshpool. I spend quite a bit of time there atm with my other job. Didn’t think it’s a bad place (apart from the bronx) like every town I guess in that respect. I might well try a few more Traws Cymru buses and the T2 could well be an option. Cheers mate 😊

@@LetsMakeaTrip I do miss many aspects of Welshpool, the views to the Long Mountain, Powys Castle deer park, the Montgomery Canal; all of them gems. I was just unlucky to live inbetween two aggressive neighbours - these things happen but there's no point in putting up with it (and this wasn't in the "Bronx", but I know where you mean). The X75 bus is worthy of your attention (especially Berriew and the towpath walk from there back to Welshpool), the T12 to Montgomery (and the walk up to the castle and the County War Memorial), and also, the other way up to Chirk and Llangollen with the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct inbetween. (But something tells me you've already done that aqueduct).

OK mate, seeing as you asked I might as well try and have a go at explaining it in more detail for you. When I mean nowhere to eat, I’m talking about eating out somewhere, i.e. at the place, not ‘take away’ or fast food particularly. And you’re basically giving me your opinion that there’s ‘nothing wrong with eating pizza in your room’ - it’s not a fact either way. You don’t even know whether I like pizza or not - I don’t much FWIW 😂😂 Not sure why you wrote “planning” like that? If you don’t believe any work goes into these trips then that’s entirely up to you, no problem. PS, the premier inn was the plan b (you should always have a plan b).
