I grew up on a small Wisconsin dairy farm. I've always felt that it is indeed possible to flourish (modestly) with a small herd of well-managed cows. I'm an old man now and I was never able to make that dream a reality for myself, so I'm glad to see you folks actually making it happen. Hats off to you, bravo! Managing a small herd of dairy cows is, to me, the highest art of agriculture. I would love to come for a visit some day. Stay well and keep on keeping on.
Michael, thank you for your words! We are so happy to have you along. Yes, we too believe a family can make a nice living on a small farm. We have been pleasantly surprised by the support we have gotten in our community and online. We'd love to have you come visit. Contact us via our email info@clovermountaindairy.com to stay in touch!
We definitely need more support (mentors, land grant college research, access to funding, small affordable equipment) for small farms. It really is about rebuilding farming communities and food security. There will always be a place for mega-farms but that should not be the default or the ideal. Thanks for your support!
@@vnthomas16 yea. I’m pressing the idea of switching to the smaller family farms like yourself. I totally disagree with what the big corporations are doing and hurting the small farms.
Thanks for taking us along on your daily routine! It makes me laugh when I see your A#1 operation and I compare that in my mind to my grandfather’s 1-3 cow milking operation back 50 years ago. I would tell you what it consisted of but you would be horrified! It’s a wonder we all didn’t die of some kind of disease. My hats off to you all for all your hard work and a excellent facility and animals! It was good to see footage of the dog, cat, and chickens. I love seeing them all!
That is very true! We really believe the milk is better because we keep them the healthiest and happiest! Thank you for the kind words and following along!
thank you for allowing me to watch your farm for a day, I myself have milked with great satisfaction on my farm in the Netherlands for 45 years, but my milk went to the cooperative Friesland Campina, where 70% of the Dutch dairy farmers are members. , so we process and sell the milk through the cooperative, nice to see how it can be done differently, keep it up and enjoy the beautiful profession of cattle farmer

Don’t know if it’s been suggested before - I would either dig a pit for the manure spreader or a ramp for the wheelbarrow or combination of both to avoid scooping the wheelbarrow every trip. Your cleanliness is extraordinary!!!
We’ve thought of a few different options, maybe even going old school with a litter carrier. We plan to add some composting someday, so that will affect our waste handling too.
It does. The actual filming slows things down a bit, and of course editing takes time too. We’re getting more efficient with experience, but we enjoy making videos and sharing our farm.
What a nice, clean operation, and your cows look very content!! I watched when y'all were building everything. The milking parlor looks great!!! Thanks for doing what y'all do!!!❤️
You are so inspiring! I have had a family cow, but have often considered having a small local dairy for my neighbors in my retirement. I enjoy your videos!🙂
We appreciate the support! We vat pasteurize, which is the lowest temperature pasteurization, and honestly, I can’t taste a difference between it and the milk right out of our bulk tank. But, I can definitely taste a difference in ultra-pasteurized milk from the store! And not in a good way!
Very very nice setup you folks have there and the parlour is top notch. The one thing I’d like to mention that I noticed and I got this advice from an old cattleman in northern BC. Keep a sharp pair of scissors or a razor knife handy at the milking stall or squeeze so you can trim the tail hair just below the tail. As you can guess it keeps a lot of things a lot cleaner and in the colder temperatures it cuts down on the buildup.

What’s your thoughts about batten strips on your barn? Labor of love.👍🏻
We decided against batten strips. The ventilation with the gaps is part of our barn design. There is one corner we may batten someday when we get it enclosed and separate from the rest of the barn.
I grew up on a dairy farm in Iowa, we would of used batten strips. -25 LOL ⛄️
What kind of herd size are you guys aiming for ultimately?
Definitely no more than 12... But we’d probably be happiest milking 6-8.
