Amazing story. As part of the lions club, I traveled to central Mexico with a busload of optometrist and ophthalmologist from Missouri. In a town called Penjamo, over the course of two days, we tested nearly 2000 people and administered used glasses to most of them. this was remarkable. Perhaps one of the most remarkable moments was when he six year old girl, whom had terrible vision, came in for an exam. Her vision was +2.5 in one eye and -2 in the other. it’s safe to say she had never seen properly in her life. After the optometrist gave me the prescription, I rummage through the well organized inventory. I was hopeful, but I had never seen that prescription, let alone in a small person’s frame. At my wits end, I finally found a pair that matched exactly the prescription and, they were “Rainbow Brite” themed glasses. When I put them on the little girl, she saw properly for the first time in her life. And a room of nearly 200 people came to tears. It was a miracle.
Thanks much!!! I just got my annual Optometrist visit and he told me to move from 1.75 to 2.5. It's 100% better for reading/computer now, but my eyes bit tired now, proabably b'z now I have to take them out for all other task. Before I was kind of OK use for other tasks around the house. I hope my brain will work it it. Anybody has this situation. Tx all
I feel your pain. At almost 50 years old, I felt I had outgrown my +1.50 I had used for the past 4-5 years and prescribed +2.00 and +2.25, left and right eye. But at 52, it seemed to get worse and now +2.50 and +3.00 and a single distance vision at +0.75 and +1.25 I use to watch TV. I’m 55 now and the prescription has stayed the same, thank God!
I'm doing it totally different. I have contacts for distance, my prescription is -2.0. I went to the supermarket with my glasses on, then put a pair of reading glasses in front of them that were +2.0. They cancelled each other out, then I'm nearsighted as normal. Problem is that I have to get too close to the computer than what is comfortable, so I just ordered +1.75 reading glasses, should allow me to back off a bit. Should work great with my contacts for when I need to read up close.
Thanks for the video! I had cataract surgery, both eyes set to plano distance with monofocal lenses. Formerly myopic in the -5 to -6 range, so I was used to really sharp up-close vision without glasses and accustomed to holding a book or phone much closer than most do. Like you said, I figured out that the strength of the reading glasses determines the given focal point. No glasses needed from so-called infinity up to about 3 feet +1.5 or +2 for the computer and general reading distance (arm's length or a little less) +3 for my preferred or habitual phone or book distance +6 for super-detailed up-close work--focal point is about 6 inches, which replicates my old vision up close without glasses.
Thank you for this. I've had lasik surgery years ago (best sight I've ever had). But Dr said 50% of patients would need reading glasses around 50 to 60yrs of age. I was unfortunate & need a pair. Just didn't understand the numbers the glasses were listed as.
great video thank for the info., here in the UK I have found power up to 4.0. as you suggested I have different ones and use the high power ones as a magnifying glasses.
That is pretty interesting, Dr. Nelson. I am getting ready to head to Walmart. With your age chart, I will know about where to start (1.5 for me). By the way, I did see a 3.0 power at Dollar General once. P.S. Word for the day: DIOPTER
Hello Dr Nelson, what happens if a patient needs two different power for reading glasses? For example, one eye +2.00 the other +2.50. My optometrist didn’t test each eye independently for reading glasses. He just got me to read from a card with both eyes open. How would you write the prescription in the ADD portion, +2.00 for both eyes or +2.50 for both?
I wear 2.0 to read anything in small print. Here's the issue. I go looking for otc glasses, and one store may have a 2.0 set with a blurred image then next store same, then next store same.... after many stores I find a set of 2.0 with perfectly clear imagery. Wth? They're all 2.0, but evidently not created equal. I thought maybe it was me but my wife confirmed the rest were just slightly blurry. Those give me headaches. Find a power to suit you, then shop around for the best clarity.
I'm 48 and I bought 3.75 strength to read anything I have to hold it literally 6 inches from my head...lol So yeah I I got two powerful ones..Maybe I'll just get the 1 strength ..I could still read good at arm length ..I think my problem is more with dry eye and strain... I could even read from 10 inches away but it's hurts my eyes.. Right now I'm dealing with Noticing a few eye floaters I've always had them they come and go over the decades but I'm just noticing them more because I'm not doing things I'm looking at the sky a lot... Also how half focals are a pain in the neck..Especially if I'm trying to work on the car and I want to see good detail if I'm laying down and looking in the direction you have no glasses do they have glasses that are full frame but for reading...Like when I was working under the dash board it's hard to see Focus ...because it's so close quarters..I tried reading glasses they don't help Because I'm looking up
What if someone has 20/20 vision in both eyes after cataract surgery and they lost their near vision. Both eyes implanted with monofocal iol set to distance. Can they get prescription progressive glasses to read, thread a needle and do computer work?
I just went to my eye dr. but without telling me they gave me a new one. UGH! With that said, they said I need 1.25 but I was hoping to get my reading glasses made because I suffer from tired eyes too. Is this just common as we get older? I love to read and if I have the time, i can read for hours.
Thank you so much. This really helped! New sub. Can we LIKE more than once? For now I'll try other methods you spoke about. I really wish I can get the form, if not a bother. Thanks for taking the time to share.
I went to the eye doctor & he gave me a prescription that was too strong(in my opinion). Since I order my glasses online, do I reduce the sphere or the cylinder?
go back to the eye doctor.....it also could be the online glasses, they are known to be less accurate, also there are many measurements that go into making a great pair of glasses that can't really be done online.
How in a nation of most people graduated with a level of 7th grade math suppose to be able to convert 12 inches into centimeters then find the reciprocal of that and come up with the answer for reading glasses? I noticed nobody else asked that question? What you only have Algebra readers on here? If you don’t know the what a reciprocal is you might be a redneck?

This is a very helpful video, very clearly and professionally explained, but… I’m confused by the messy appearance. Messy hair, unbuttoned shirt, crooked tie, messed up jack collar. You’re a good looking guy. You could look like a million bucks with a 2 minute adjustment. Fix your jacket collar, button your shirt, straighten your tie, boom… you look like doctor on a TV show. Instead you look like you just woke up drunk on a park bench and you’re lost.
Of all that you meaningful and interesting takeaways from this video, you decide to focus on this fine gentleman's look. what a sad and pathetic life you have

No problem!
I’ve seen 3.75 strength reading glasses but I use lower strength. I’m never sure which one to get so I appreciate you sending out the info. Thanks
Sir, what if I have astigmatism too? Does reading glasses need astigmatism correction?

your optometrist likely checked bother eyes independently...that will be able to give the difference between the two eyes

Could you send me a sheet to reading the distance for glasses.
What's the number for a working distance of 6 meters away?
The link does not work I try
Email link doesn’t work on iPhone
sorry about that
the link for the methods is dead - 404 error.

The highest dioptre over the counter reading glasses I have seen are +4.0.
that makes sense
