So I do own this knife and I very much enjoy carrying it, especially in gym shorts where I try to go as light as possible just to be comfortable. However, you are 100% right about the price and it completely overshadows any positive aspect that the knife might have. I bought this second-hand for about $300 and for that price I am not upset with the purchase. The thing that I think you have the most valid point on though, is that whilst a knife doesn't HAVE to have a purpose (it can be cool just for the sake of being cool), it has to be at least worth the value that the company is asking for it, and that's gotta be true for every knife from 20 bucks to 2000... or the person has to really, really want the thing. There are ton of overbuilt knives where people could argue that those don't have a purpose either, but you can feel the value - they're made of premium materials and have way more material involved than something like the Narrows. I would be curious to hear a CNC machinist chime in here and give a potential breakdown of this thing because it's the only place where I could see that extra $200ish dollars coming into play.

Pretty much par for the course for the pricing wizards. Explain the price of the Paysan just for one example. It just can't be explained with any sort or justification. But we all love the Paysan, Drunken, and many others. We the consumer is who sets these prices bc we're buying them. This particular model doesn't appeal to me personally but to some folks I can see how it would, and I'm a hiker.

Benchmade so innovative they decided to make a knife so thin it's uncomfortable 😆 It's like a company sent out a knife with only liners and no scale material attached. I mean Benchmade could have had it as an option to be used without scales and sold different scales to go on top of it in all types of materials.

Edit: I have the knife and I like it. It's an extremely practical EDC. I like the raw titanium. I like the look of it. Reminds me of Star Trek, like something that would have come off the Enterprise. It's well made. It's razor sharp. I got it at a discount. It works for me. And I'm not really a "knife guy" if that matters. I have a couple fixed blades and a couple pocket knives. I don't want a big bulky pocket brick, I want something sleek and simple. Mine locks up perfectly, it is perfectly centered. This fit the bill.

I own the “Barnes” James brand knife that was referred to in the video. I don’t own a Narrows, but I have handled one and was considering getting one up to that point. FWIW the Barnes is an awesome knife! I got 15% off from their site and paid 550.00 which is too much for a knife that is not custom or at least mid tech in my opinion. However I wanted an integral knife and I am a titanium fan too, so when I got the discount I pulled the trigger. After 1 year of carrying the Barnes it has become one of my of my very favorite knives. It has a glassy smooth action, fantastic milling, and the heat treat on the m390 is some of the stickiest I have EVER experienced. It is also my only Chinese (Reate) knife and I was little ashamed that I bought it. But not now. I have an XM 18, and Umnumzaan, and a 247 wayfarer and it is every bit as good as any of those. As for the Narrows I found it sooo thin that it seemed uncomfortable in hand under even moderate usage.

Do you guys like mixing up parts on your knives to "customize" them?

    It is quite literally saddening, even heartbreaking to hear your reaction to this knife. You are normally so upbeat and happy to see a new knife, yet in this video I can feel your dissatisfaction through the screen... I'm right there with you, as a Benchmade fan myself, watching their knives balloon in price from just a few years ago is soul crushing. I remember the G10 Griptilian at $187 seeming expensive to me when it came out, but I bought it anyway because I loved it. Now Benchmade comes out with the PSK, another design I'd love to add to my collection, but it's mind bogglingly priced at $450....? What is happening??? At some point I'm just gonna have to stop collecting because Benchmade has just lost the plot... ;~;

IMO, with Benchmades known QC issues, I’d say $300-350 would be acceptable. Still too expensive for what you get in my opinion. But at least I could point to the materials and the fact that it’s US made. As it stands, they’re out of their minds.

For 500 bucks this better come with a show girl 🤣 smh 🤦 benchmade your prices make it so I can't buy you. 😑 I like spyderco tho. 🤷‍♀️ its insane i have so many knives on preorder for pretty cheap like 70-135 dollars and kizer and qsp has what this knife has but one knife 500 bucks no. Winters knives and maxace actually worth the money.

I watched a disassembly video, and was disappointed that they have bearings riding on titanium without steel washers. That seems dumb. Should’ve stayed with PB washers.

I was fortunate to find the DLC version on the secondary market for $255 USD.
IMO you could justify a price of $275-$300 at the absolute maximum. No one should pay full price for this.

Can't do Benchmade. So overpriced. Charging $220+, for manual opening, non-automatic knives, made with D2 and aluminum? I don't think so. I can get very similar, or better, knives for less than 1/2 the price. I like their designs, really. But those prices are just arrogant. Too much arrogance in this country, these days. And before anyone wants to pop off at me, about any cred, I AM former military, and a chef for three decades, and I have spent my entire half century of life owning and using knives. I got my first little slipjoint from my great-grandfather at 4 years old. And, yes, I did cut the shizzle out of myself, many times. LOL.

  • @wc4201

The reason for the pricing is one of these:
    1. Poor product development procedures
    2. Bad raw material buying procedures
    3. Greedy knowing the Benchmade faithful will show up and buy anything
Personally I think it’s a mix of all three. At $500 them Chinese knives by Reate and Rike are looking really good right now.

  • @bornonthebattlefront4883

The 522$ price tag has to be an internal joke or something
My guess is that it was gonna be 450$ originally (still too high, but a more reasonable price with a more reasonable margin)
    Then someone was like
“lol, what if we made it 522, cause of that joke!”
Cause 522 is such a strange number
If you could, wouldn’t you take the 20$ hit to keep it below 500?
    Really out of touch pricing

Dude I bought a full Diamond titanium Kunwu Padre with Vanax Super Clean steel for $269. Don’t tell me this knife can’t sell for $269. I know it’s American made but the parts can’t possibly cost anywhere near a Padre.

I just snagged a full dress damasteel timascus mini Evo typhoon for 525 and I’m sitting here nearly in tears laughing at this price as I flip it. I have one of my highest grails in my hand, best action I’ve ever handled, and for the same price, benchmade gives you a knife with worse quality and materials than a 200 artisan cutlery knife. Insane

I mean if this is an isolated incident reach out to them. Ask to talk to a representative or spokesperson for the company. Maybe even see if they have someone who will answer a few questions who is in charge of approving a models MSRP and what factors they consider to determine a specific models MSRP. Those kind of company's usually always have reps who would have no problem answering questions about their company.
Say your just doing research for a documentary about knives and their history. There's a couple different angles you could approach it from. For a reliable answer I'm not sure of many more options. I don't see what's wrong with atleast an attempt.

It was made for the military who get their knives for dirt cheap through GSA contracts. It is extremely light and and thin to carry. As Active Duty military, I hate it. Though i hate 90% of the knives you jump for joy with. I look at this knife the same way I look at those other 90%. Spyderco ftw

Benchmades is out of touch. It’s amazing that they make so much money. Spyderco’s pricing is much more reasonable. Many people are repeat buyers of Spyderco knives. You get to try many different steels with Spyderco. I think Spyderco is a much better company than Benchmade.

I'm the horrible Benchmade Fanboy. I love Benchmade knives. The prices just make them unattainable for me. Even if money was no object for me it would still be hard for me to justify the price and money I would spend to own Benchmade knives. Unlike the Apple fanboys I don't live in a fantasy world where I can make up things to justify the price to make myself feel better smh.

This is a knife on a diet, for reaaaally thin people ... like super models. They don't need these fat blades between overweight scales like sandwiches or hamburgers. The name is the way to be: narrow. Next is the Benchmade Salad. With green DLC, of course.

  • @JHolmes2070

I truly think Benchmade has "jumped the shark" and made a mockery of themselves at this point. For very good model they release they release 3 to 4 duds. For this one, cool design but the price tag is abhorrent. There should have been a G10 Version, then a step up to the all Ti and then a Gold Class for the fanboys. With the expiration of the axis lock patent BM has lost a large chunk of the the entry level to mid priced crowd.

As a fan of pocket knives I feel that Benchmade is out of touch with the community. The funny thing is that Benchmade makes a ton of money. It seems like they believe anything they make is going to sell. The Griptilian is my favorite Benchmade knife. I would have liked to see a Gold Class Bugout with a titanium handle and either a Damascus, or mirror polished blade. I’m not really a fan of super thin knives. Shirogorov also makes some really thin knives. Thank you for the review

The narrows and the newly released 710 are proof to me that benchmade knows their omega springs suck. I believe it is in their best interest to redesign all their models to take the flat omega style spring from new 710 and not up the cost. The axis lock used to be the thing that differentiated benchmade from everyone else. They need to use the flat springs to make them stand above the rest of the crossbar locks. I have no interest in buying another benchmade until they release another model with the flat omega springs. I’ve had too many omega springs on my 940 break to have any trust in the knife. Other brands do crossbar locks better than benchmade for less and, arguably better quality.

Exactly. If you get a custom Bugout with titanium scales & S90V it's $440 on the Benchmade site with no discounts. The Narrows at 400/420 is well within the range of what other Benchmade knives with titanium scales would sell for, and it's razor thin, razor sharp with M390 steel. Honestly the price at this range isn't crazy at all.

I was in a bar the other day and saw an ad running on one of the tvs for the benchmade water line. I think that tells a lot. Tells a lot about where your money is going when you buy a benchmade. And to me signals that benchmade knows they’ve lost the enthusiast market and have decided to branch out and scam the non-knife folk who don’t know any better. Don’t see Spyderco or Kershaw or microtech running tv ads. That’s for damn sure.
