  • All UV lights are not created equal. They’re used for different manufactures different dyes that full fluoresce at different light wavelength spectrum.
If you use a UV light for instant in the 365 nano meter range on a dye that’s in the 400 nanometers range it won’t work as well but it will work because the spectrum decay above and below the highest point of 365 nm there will be a little bleed off of some of that other spectrum.
But when you match up the perfect light for example 395 nm with a fluorescent dye manufactures UV trace dye that was specifically designed to Flores it’s brightest at 395 nm you get a extremely bright dye that is very easy to see even when there is the tiniest amount of dye showing that you would normally would never see you with any other light.
Most shops and most technicians just think there’s one UV light and just because it glows they think it works.
And if you have the wrong mismatch of light and dye and you’re not perfect dark conditions for example a little sunlight shining in or a very bright shop there could be dye right in front of you and you shine your uv light on it and it could be very weak and a very tiny amount and you will see NOTHING !!!...
I have proven this point in many shops with their UV dye or their UV light watching them look for leaks and they see nothing.
Wasting the technicians time and if he’s on a bonus it’s even worse.
Wasting the shops time of billable hours but of course they bill the customer and say they find nothing but the leak was right there in front of them but they could not see it.
So the customer gets charge $$$ for nothing he gets screwed glued and tattooed ripped off and Wallet gets mugged like an ATM.
So basically the mechanic or the shop is stealing money from the customer. Because they don’t have the right tools and they don’t have the right knowledge. Polite way of saying a thief is a thief.
The same when a shop buys a cheap old leak detector that is not kept up with maintenance or it was never good in the first place specially the super cheap ones that false trigger all the time.
You might as well be predicting leaks with Taro cards, sacrificing chickens, and reading tea leaves as your method of diagnostic.
But when I tell the shop owner or technician how much a good UV light cost they’re usually quiet after that don’t want to buy a good one who is the cheapest or just above that.
Luckily UV light diode LED technology has been getting better stronger and cheaper so the prices are becoming more affordable for less money. So now there’s no excuse to not have good LED UV leak detecting lights
As for leak detectors halfway decent leak detectors don’t even start to be considered good until over $350.
The better ones you’re starting around 500+ dollars.
Luckily in Automotive you only have two basic refrigerants to deal with R134 and R1234YF.
Residential and commercial refrigeration you have a lot more different refrigerants that are very elusive to try to find a leak on you cannot just use one leak detector. Or one method.

@@coldfinger459sub0 10w! You could burn off all the old dye with that. Laser protective goggles are a whole different type of safety gear. Better make sure you get those for the wavelength you're going for. Watch out for reflections. I think I damaged my retina with a laser when I was younger. Retinal specialist did a test on my left eye that was super annoying. It involved focusing on something and hitting a button when I saw the lights. Revealed that I'm a little blind the corner of my left eye but I don't notice it. If your eyes feel like they have sand in them it's a sign of recent damage to your retinas.

@@RobertLanghorn like when you’re a teenager in your welding for the first time can you use two weak of glasses or no glasses and all wake up the next day with the burning Send in the eyes experience that once.
Put wide dispersion lens over the focus beam so it doesn’t have a direct focal power but could light the hell out of under a hood of a car.
But still definitely need high-grade protective laser glasses.
I seen a demonstration of cheap laser eye protective glasses and quality professional ones before.
The most dangerous UV lights are when you put the filter on it and you can’t see any visible light if you don’t know you’re looking at it or reflecting back in your eye off of something shiny.
I think UV laser light is the most scary dangerous thing if you think of it because you don’t even know it’s there.

It’s not necessary for this manufactures dye. But the glasses are for UV protection because ultraviolet light is bad for the cornea of your eyes. Some manufactures dies if you don’t use the light you won’t see the die specially if it is over diluted.
The glasses help enhance the glowing of the dye make it brighter. If I would take the glasses and put them in front of the camera lens you would see the day I get bright.
There are some types of dyes from manufacturers with some lights if you don’t use the glasses you would barely see the dye glow especially if you were in a bright location out in a parking lot on a bright day or a very well lit shop.
There’s been many times I’m in other shops and one of the technicians are looking for a leak with their UV light and they don’t see anything.. I go get one of my UV lights and shine it on the same car and the leak glows out brightly.

Which one is better to find the 134a or 1234yf leak ?
    365 nm or 395 nm ?

Excellent question. 365 nm for 395 nm this has nothing to do with the refrigerant itself.
The light wave length in the UV spectrum for the UV fluorescent dye has to do with the wave length that the dye manufacturer chooses to use in their dye.
Some manufacturers use the 365 nm
Some manufactures use the 395 nm and even up to 400+ nm
Are use dye from a manufacture in the 365 range.
But I get a range of vehicles from other shops that use different manufacturers dye so I own all the lights.
But you do not have to worry because if you get a very strong light in the 365 nm range.
That only means that that particular LED diode and filter are at its peak strength at 365 nm.
There is light bleed over in the lower range and upper range that’s still fluoresces the other dyes.
If you can only afford to get one light I would recommend getting the 365 nm.
