The reason the potato was so widespread in Ireland wasn’t so much as we had shit soil (it’s actually really fertile so that’s nice), it was more that they were the most calorie dense, nutritious thing that we could grow a lot of easily. They grew in really dense clusters and didn’t need a lot of land for a good yield, so every tiny cottage could have a little patch and that would be enough to feed the whole family. Plus the English exported everything else so thanks guys that really helped.
Well said. Far too many people chalk the potato famine up to "Irish incompetence" when it was a british fuck up that ultimately caused it (and allowed it to continue, in my opinion)

0:53 I'd just like to clear this up, our soil was and is actually some of the best in the world, we grew so many potatoes BC there was a land shortage on account of England stealing our country and using most of the land for beef(which the mostly dirt poor Irish people couldn't afford) and cash crops, potatoes just gave a lot of high calorie food for very little comparative space and effort to grow

Listen, losing all those chestnut trees was crazy and it’s wild that no one noticed but also, it’s literally happening to the ash trees in North America right under our noses and not a lot of people are talking about it. I found a plant like that last summer. Small flower with no leaves, but it was completely white. Almost translucent. I did some research and it turns out that they feed on the mycelium in the soil. Even cooler, the Indians crushed them and used the resulting liquid as eye drops. They also chewed the flower heads to get a result similar to opium.

I came to the US from Europe and it took me a couple of years to realize there are no chestnuts sold anywhere in winter. That was really bad news for me, because I grew up near a chestnut forest and I loved them as a kid. I was devastated to find out about the blight and I stock up like crazy whenever I can find some store that sells imported chestnuts. Raise awareness guys, bring back the chestnuts!!

I have actually seen one of the remaining American Chestnut trees, its this little stump with a shoot coming out. Apparently it goes through cycles when it grows. Whenever it starts growing, the blight gets it and gets it down to the stump, then it repeats that process.
This episode is comedy gold, in terms of Sam O'Nella videos.

Not really "slight modification". It forst undergoes alkaline hydrolysis, is then activated with some reagents and after that is reacted with diethylamine. But yes, it is synthesised from ergotamine.
