  • We went for a 90 minute cave explorer tour at Vidgelmir, the largest lava cave in Iceland. It was in September, during Iceland's summer time. Although, we have been to other caves, its one of a kind experience as its a lava tube and get to see different formation of lava rocks and geographical formations. What attracted me in the first place is the wide entrance opening down to the lava cave.
This lava field was created roughly eleven hundred years ago when we had massive volcanic eruption from a crater row adjacent to the western flank of the Langjokull glacier. The lava flow is 52km long and covers an area of about 242 sq km lasting roughly for about 3 years. It resulted in many caves of which Vidgelmir is one of the larger caves. The depth of the cave ranges from 30-40m below ground level.
The admission fee for the cave explorer tour is 6500ISK per person. We did not make a booking, just walked in there. The cave explorer tour brings about 1/3 of the way into the tube. If you want a more involved cave experience, it is recommended to go for the extended package going deeper into the tunnel.
