  • What's shaking, people! I'm back with another a-ha reaction as we continue our journey through their sophomore album Scoundrel Days (1986), this time with the song "The Weight of the Wind." As you'll see, this is another evocative and literary-style title that had me intrigued in advance even if it remained opaque, and once again, the sonics did not disappoint! So join me as we listen to another top-shelf tune from this remarkable a-ha record. Cheers!

For me, the song is about not letting yourself be pulled down by heartbreak. The person you have lost is gone forever.
It was another RUclipsr who was the direct reason for my rediscovery of a-ha. His fabulous analyzes of the music captured me forever in the a-ha universe. You do the same thing, but you open the door to songs that I never really noticed before. Thank you.

The song is about jealousy, as stated by Paul Waaktaar Savoy who wrote the songs lyrics and music. I find it to be one of the best songs on the album, and the very best on «side 2» of the vinyl / cassette version of Scoundrel Days along with Soft Rains of April imho.

It almost transcends the rest of the album in a weirdly anonymous way. It will always be at the very top for me.

'Your face looked new against the town, you've come to loose some memories/like you i've came to touch new grounds, but you want to lose the weight of the wind/the one that you love WILL NEVER BE FOUND!(you've lost her forever)/you speak in to the falling rain / words you'ld lost but found again'... And i also like the way he 'viciously' whisper-sings 'in your jealous mind'(i see their snakey arms entwined,so clear and cruel,in your jealous mind) ...Always loved this track. It gives me smth like a 'speed of the wind' sense.

Mysterious and dark, that's what i like in aha. Especially after bright song like We're looking for the whales. Quick jump from light to dark and back. That is usual in their early works before 2000. Then they become more smooth.

Such a powerful track. Much like Roland Orzabal you've probably realised by now that you can expect crazy vocal flourishes out of nowhere, at any time in their songs.

    • @mattsnider2667

Well said, I'm beginning to see that (or hear that, I suppose). And yes, that is absolutely something I've come to expect from Roland! I remember thinking some of his higher flourishes "must be" a female singer, but multiple TFF fans were like, "nope, that's Roland!" 😂

That's amazing, thank you for sharing! And I get it---I've had songs I've known for years suddenly hit me a lot harder for one reason or another. And it's a testament to the quality of this song that it can still move you so powerfully despite your familiarity with it.

It's a great song. I think the lyrics are about someone carrying some dark cloud with them and are unable to let it go. I must say, that after my project to make modern DM sound palatable, this video is a welcome reminder of what good synth and an actual good vocal performance are, so I thank you for that.

The themes that seem to exist throughout "Scoundrel Days" are separation, distance, isolation, cities foreign to the protagonist both visited and dreamed of, loss and search, leaving and arriving, truth and lies, and I'm sure there are some I've never picked up on.
I've heard Pal as a lead singer and his voice has similarities to Morten's. He certainly doesn't have the same range, but it makes it hard to know if it's layering or traditional backing vocals. Magne does a little lead singing later on as well and his voice also compliments Morten's well.

Pål and Magne complement Morten very well together. Pål is down there, and Magne is up there. Morten and Magne harmonize so well on Bluest of Blue from the latest album, one of the most beautiful things I've heard from them.

@@ahkkariq7406 I agree completely. I listened to "True North" at work Friday night and it's so good. It seemingly works in the same compositional space as "Cast in Steel," which I loved.

@@floydmcmondo I love "Cast in Steel", too. For some reason it didn't get the same good reviews that this new album has got. I don't get it. I actually like Morten's songs on Cast in Steel very much, along with the others.

    One of my favourites...a lost gem! Morten's voice is so powerful on this one! I just noticed (after 36 years!) that there's a line that sort of ties in with a line in Manhatten Skyline;
    (TWOFTW)
You speak into the falling rain
Words you'd lost, but found again
    (MS)
    The wind and the rain
Bring back words of a song

NoCanDo (Lori) just mentioned that she is waiting for me to lobby for Driftwood - so here goes! Driftwood is the B-side to The Sun Always Shines On TV single release. It is a treasure! Since you already did the whole of Hunting High and Low, you HAVE to react to Driftwood as well - it is quintessential a-ha!

It’s actually going to be very interesting when you go from their 3rd album to the 4th. The 4th album is where they ditched the synth pop totally , and after the overly poppy production of the 3rd album. Though the 3rd album has some great tunes , the tile track and out of blue comes green.

  • @tristramcoffin926

I always loved this one more for its percussive nature and Morton's yearning. However, there really isn't enough pan flute synth in popular music.
