Matt I’m going to share your channel with the a-ha fan base. There hasn’t been a reactor going through each and every album from start to finish. Love the look on your face when morten hits the power singing lol. Also love your set up , reminds me of being in an old record store when I was growing up. The next track I’ve been losing you is one of my all time favourite a-ha tracks. It’s about someone who has murdered their partner/wife/girlfriend. But wrapped inside an insanely catch rock pop tune. I promise you won’t be able to get the chorus out of your head 😂
Wow, that means a lot! Thank you so much! And oh my goodness, I can't wait for the next song in light of that remarkable description! Cheers again, appreciate you greatly. And yes, so many more a-ha reactions to come! :)
scoundrel days is an incredible album. my favourite parts of this song is certainly the final chorus where Morten Pal and Magne sing together they create a great harmony
Yeah i love that part too. There's a live performance from one of their early '90s tour where after some guitar solo they join all 3 voices in the same part before the end (Morten almost huging in his arms Pal while sharing the same microphone) singing in unison and sounding so beautiful. As if he felt the pain that Pal was in when he wrote those words. It's a 'painful' ,desperate love song. One of my most favourite Aha tracks ever.
@@christianoazzuro6711 Johannesburg -94 might be the concert you are thinking about. Morten is enjoying Påls guitar work, and then they come together for the ending of the song. Such a sweet moment. The guitar is between them, though.
@@ahkkariq7406 Yes actually that was it and i just revisited again.Really sweet moment knowing the rather hard conflicts they had while working together in their creative proccess and their 'stubborness' that were some of the reasons that led them to disband for some years. That moment felt to me as if Morten was saying'ok,lat's forget our little 'fights' and 'bitter' words come here my precious friend, you know i apreciate you and don't wanna loose you'.Maybe that's my wrong impression but sometimes body language speaks louder than words.
Great song, and love your reaction to it, and happy that you think it is great too. As others have noted, live versions of this are priceless, especially the ones where Pal does an extended guitar solo near the end. This is my favourite live song. Non stop fist pumping action !!
I have a special weakness on this song, cause i was in a similar state that Pal was in when he wrote the lyrics. So i can understand his feelings.Musicwise this was a fast grower on me. Charmingly melancholic but also vibrant. And Morten's performance singing out these words was a shot to the heart for me.I also keep in mind a specific line that sounds quite 'self critical' possibly regreting for some kind of egoism or unfair behaviour ...'what have i done what lies i have told?I play games with the ones that rescued my soul'.And i also like it when Morten reaches the point where he sings 'Oh when she glows in the dark and i'm weak/struck by the sight,of this breathtaking beauty on which i can hide'...he suddenly turns his voice from punchy to 'airy, mellow' following the impact of the lyrics. For me Scoundrel days / Swing of things, are my two most fave standard ones off the album.
I've often wondered if I'd not grown up listening to these albums what my reaction would be, do they have an impact or was I just in a formative phase so that is why they impacted and mean so much to me... You might be providing a glimpse of that answer... So thanks for taking the time, I'll be watching along.
When you follow up the "Scoundrel Days" title track with another powerhouse like "The Swing of Things" you've basically said, "There's not going to be much filler on this album. The lyrics in the breakdown are super romantic and relatable. The vocal layering and backing is perfection. I've got another odd thought about certain songs which is what I call "you can't go back from here." It's that moment when you know that the artist(s) took the song to the very heights that were possible and what follows is all that can follow and be right. There are not very many songs that achieve this, and if there were it wouldn't be so special. A lot of times when a song hits that point it goes back into the chorus with a renewed vigor, which is fine, but not so masterful as what a-ha did here. It's the instrumental part just before "What have I done..." it creates the despair that he's about to express and pays off with a heightened variation of the chorus rather than just repeat with renewed vigor. There are reaction channels that approach songs from composition and music theory standpoints and it's a shame no one has ever done a good breakdown of "The Swing of Things."
This one is such a fantastic song…such a great contrast yet a perfect follow-up to the title track. Scoundrel Days was edgy and kind dangerous sounding …but this is just so smoothly sophisticated in its syncopated swing. This song was another one written by Pal as a vehicle for his angst at the separation between him and girlfriend Lauren and his uncertainty about where their relationship stood. Witnessed by the words in the song…”oh how can I sleep with your voice in my head, with an ocean between us and room in my bed”
Good for Pål, he got the girl of all his longings and worries. Their separation was transformed into some great lyrics. One of the other band members was joking about it, that Pål should have had Lauren on the other side of the Atlantics more of the time. Now they have a grown up son, True August, who has made some very interesting music.
"The Swing Of Things" You say the world's an eventful place You give me news I don't want to know You say that I should care That I should speak my mind Oh, but how can I speak of the world Rushing by With a lump in my throat And tears in my eyes Oh, have we come to the point of no turning back Or is it still time to get into The swing of things Let us walk through this windless city I'll go on till the winter gets me Oh, "sleep..." you wrote "sleep, my dear" In a letter somewhere Oh, but how can I sleep with your voice in my head With an ocean between us And room in my bed Oh, have I come to the point where I'm losing the grip Or is it still time to get into The swing of things Oh, when she glows in the dark And I'm weak by the sight Of this breathtaking beauty In which I can hide Oh, there's a worldful out there Of people I fear But given time I'll get into The swing of things Yes, when she glows in the dark and I'm struck by the sight I know that I'll need this for the rest of my life What have I done What lies I have told I've played games with the ones that rescued my soul Oh, have I come to the point where I'm losing the grip Or is it still time to get into The swing of things
The amount of people who argued with me over the years trying to pretend that what he sang didn't sound like "Oh, but how can I sleep with your voice in my head, with an ocean between us and POO in my bed?
I know I'm coming here late but the first 3 tracks on this album might be my 3 favorite a-ha song 😅

One reviewer at time said about scoundrels days that it has the best opening 1 2 3 punch. The first 3 songs are just amazing

7:10 Perfeita definição!
Pure pop perfection.
The best part about the story is that they got married and have lived happily ever after! 🥰 True story!

Again, as good as The Swing of Things is on the album, some of the live versions turn this into something truly epic...

6:06 Do meio para o final, a passagem mais linda da música pop...
swing of things is epic live.
"The Swing Of Things"
You say the world's an eventful place
You give me news
I don't want to know
You say that I should care
That I should speak my mind
Oh, but how can I speak of the world
Rushing by
With a lump in my throat
And tears in my eyes
Oh, have we come to the point of no turning back
Or is it still time to get into
The swing of things
Let us walk through this windless city
I'll go on till the winter gets me
Oh, "sleep..." you wrote "sleep, my dear"
In a letter somewhere
Oh, but how can I sleep with your
voice in my head
With an ocean between us
And room in my bed
Oh, have I come to the point where I'm losing the grip
Or is it still time to get into
The swing of things
Oh, when she glows in the dark
And I'm weak by the sight
Of this breathtaking beauty
In which I can hide
Oh, there's a worldful out there
Of people I fear
But given time I'll get into
The swing of things
Yes, when she glows in the dark and
I'm struck by the sight
I know that I'll need this for the rest of my life
What have I done
What lies I have told
I've played games with the ones that
rescued my soul
Oh, have I come to the point where I'm losing the grip
Or is it still time to get into
The swing of things
The amount of people who argued with me over the years trying to pretend that what he sang didn't sound like "Oh, but how can I sleep with your voice in my head, with an ocean between us and POO in my bed?
Could have been a Johnny Depp quote ;-)
Oh wow, I heard "and YOU in my bed" but that is admittedly much funnier.
