The building that blew up in the open was indeed the old Orlando FL City Hall. Orlando built a new one and offered the old one to any film company that wanted to pay a fee to blow it up. I was the VP of Advertising at Universal Studios and was friends with the director of all the Lethal Weapon pictures, The late, great Dick Donner (he directed all of the Grand Opening TV commercials for Universal). In addition to getting to hang around on set one of the nights they were shooting (not the night they blew the building) I was an extra in the movie (a paramedic). The final cool thing was going to dinner the next night With Dick, Joel Silver, Gibson and Glover and watching people double taking when they realized who they were seeing. And...also...The scene where Riggs & Murtaugh were getting into it on the boat in the marina was shot over in Tampa.

Well, most of it was anyway; The steel mill sequences were all filmed near Pittsburgh with some last-minute effects work shooting done in LA at the end of production.
Yeah I'm pretty big fan, lol
In fact I actually went to Dallas for the 30th anniversary screening event at City Hall there, me and some buds - We spent the weekend leading up to it scoping out most of the shooting locales. Great times.

Not only does Rene Russo as Lorna comes back in Lethal Weapon 4, Russo is also in another movie with Mel Gibson in Ransom (1996) playing a married couple whose son gets kidnapped. 2 big bonuses, though, Ransom is directed by Ron Howard, (Apollo 13), and has Gary Sinise in it. I know there are rumours of a Lethal Weapon 5, with Mel Gibson directing, but I really don't know how good it could be, or even what the story could be. Both of those guys have aged 30 years since Lethal Weapon 4 came out, and Murtaugh was already supposed to be in his early 50s at that point. I love all of the actors in these movies, but 30 years is a LONG time. I think it's best to just leave the quadrilogy as it stands.

I love the opening with Riggs and Murtaugh arguing over the bomb. It's silly and absurd, but still fun. And yes, they blew up an actual building. They sought out a building that was scheduled for a controlled demolition and found an administrative building in Florida, so they shot the opening scene around its demolition.
This film unintentionally kicked off a controversy about armor-piercing bullets. Most people don't know that armor-piercing bullets don't exist, but people lost their minds anyway over the possibility that armor-piercing bullets could be on the streets.

This is my favorite of all four films because of the chemistry between Riggs and Lorna, added to the already awesome stuff going on between him and Murtaugh, it's so great to have Riggs finally have somebody in his life he doesn't have to worry about losing. It's a way in which eventually he can kind of have his own life and not have to just live in someone else's, because he'll have a stable relationship at home with someone who understands him cuz she knows the same job.
I also just love how fun it is, the second and first one were really harsh and dark, and this one feels more topical now after a lot of the stuff that's gone down since then. A little bit ahead of its time there. The fourth one is kind of over-the-top but still fun, btw.

The incomplete highway, is Interstate 105, in Los Angeles: it runs from Bellflower/Southgate, to the southern boundary of L.A. International Airport (it basically parallells & runs into the west end of Imperial Highway).
It's the same freeway that's used in "Speed", "Falling Down", "Live Free Or Die hard", and also, the opening chase in "Hancock", in various states. In the latter two films, it had already been completed, though in "Live Free Or Die Hard", other freeway overpasses & ramps were cg'd in, to make it look different, but some of the warehouses at LAX give it away.
There ARE specially designed bullets that can penetrate bullet-proof vests, and there are armor-piercing bullets, though the smaller caliber rounds are not armor-piercing, and the larger ones are rifle rounds - the caliber usually determining the thickness of armor that can be penetrated.
Also, while we're all well aware that these films are purely entertainment, cops can't beat-up suspects: if it's proven that they did, then the suspect walks free, and the case is thrown out.
That said, I still love these films!

My sister worked in the Orlando City Hall when this film was made. She still works in the City Hall, but in the new building. Days before the scene was shot and the old City Hall was blown up Mel Gibson and Danny Glover were given a walk-through the building. They came right through the office that my sister was still working in. She said that Mel Gibson kept himself far away from the people that worked in the building and didn't talk to anyone. However Danny Glover was very friendly and came over and talked to everyone. Says a lot.

Dum dum bullets is an old term for expanding bullets, such as hollow-point and soft-point. Basically, bullets that are designed to deform and expand upon impact to depart as much energy into the target as possible, rather than try to penetrate. The name comes from the Dum Dum Arsenal in India.

Bit late here but awesome to see you guys again and carrying on with an excellent film set, one of my favorites in fact! I always had a special spot for 3, even though I think the prior two are better.
Of course as many have said and I agree, there isn't a bad film in the lot at all. Really hope you wrap it up (and soon lol) by seeing 4. Its got plenty of fun and and really comes full circle especially about them being family.
Interesting (and neat) you're watching the extended version here for 3. All the films I think but definitely the first two have them as well. For all the films it's only some extra little scenes, just a few minutes maybe. And the films are quite good without. BUT they definitely add extra bits to the characters and their relationships and interactions and also include some nice extras and callbacks - The bit with showing Riggs' beachhouse being built has the same construction contractor dude (McGee) from 2 in it, the one that was working on Murtaugh's garage.
