This is one scene where I absolutely dislike Dean's character. This is verbal abuse. She answered the phone, because she wanted to take a message, but Rory hung up. Dean was worried that she would catch him cheating and manipulated her by deliberately trying to make her feel worthless for answering his phone with good intentions. Lindsay apologized for doing nothing wrong. Shameful.

The actress that played Lindsay, Arielle Kibbel, is actually pretty good in her scene. For the short amount screen time she’s given, she does a great job delivering her lines and her body language is awesome. The timidness and the desperate optimism she was trying to force out felt really genuine. To me she felt like a real young woman who doesn’t really know what she’s doing, trying her best to salvage a relationship that feels like it’s crumbling.
It’s the writers’ doing.. This is not the Dean they introduced in the first season.. They just had to ruin Dean and Rory for whatever reason they only know..

I think marrying someone while you’re still in love with another person a very cruel thing to do. I used to love Dean and prefer him over Jess. Now I think that out of all of Rory’s boyfriends Jess was the best one.
Lisa H - definitely. Even in the later version of the show, she gets cheated on by Logan. At least Jess didn’t cheat on her, and instead grew up, got a job doing what he enjoys, and never ran back to her after already trying once.
I think this sadly was his fate, I mean dean was a very sweet guy but even from the first season he was very aggressive towards Rory when she didn’t say she loved him back! I’ve also seen in other episodes he got too caught up in pleasing Rory he lost his own opinions and thoughts and then had bursts of anger towards her and his feelings would come out then. He is a people pleaser who gets walked all over and he hated Jess because he was so open with saying and doing what he wanted and people let him get away with it, also didn’t help that Rory had eyes for him. Unfortunately I think deans story was well fitted to him.
Dean lied to Rory. He told her that he and Lindsay both feel their marriage is over but Lindsay is clearly making an effort to make it work by cooking for him. I actually really liked that the writers went this way with Rorys character. She was lovable but obnoxiously perfect. I feel like them writing her as an adulterer REALLY added depth to her story and it was one of the first big moments that defined her character independently of Lorelei or her grandparents.

I think this scene does a REALLY good job at showing how people react when they feel bad about something they did. Almost always people who are feeling the way Dean did (like he was a bad husband, like Lindsay would find out he’d done something wrong, like his marriage was a mistake) try to make the person they’re fighting with feel those same feelings. So all the stuff he said had the intention of making her feel like a bad wife, that she was the one who made a mistake, that their marriage was a bad decision. It’s just really cool to me to see this mirroring technique executed so flawlessly on television like it is in real life. In summary: Dean sucks, but the writers nailed it
So I'm tryna understand why a teenager, barely 16, was mature enough to speak to the mother of his girlfriend about being understanding to ensure a solid relationship turns around and cheats on his wife remorselessly? Such a dramatic change... I sometimes loathe writers who destroy a well established character to make the story more interesting (?) only to end up screwing the arc...
I think the reason why they made Dean so shitty later on is that the audience really loved him but the writers didn't have any stories left to tell about Rory/Dean. So they made him a jerk so people would root for Rory/Logan.

Not to mention the other hostile encounters he had with Jess, like the fight in town square or when he was ordering for the construction workers. Rory straight up told him in high school that she left him for Jess because Jess was the bad boy and that turned her on. Dean was way too nice. Dean got smart and realised the only way to get with her was to become the bad guy (cheat on his wife)

I’ve also seen in other episodes he got too caught up in pleasing Rory he lost his own opinions and thoughts and then had bursts of anger towards her and his feelings would come out then. He is a people pleaser who gets walked all over and he hated Jess because he was so open with saying and doing what he wanted and people let him get away with it, also didn’t help that Rory had eyes for him. Unfortunately I think deans story was well fitted to him.

I actually really liked that the writers went this way with Rorys character. She was lovable but obnoxiously perfect. I feel like them writing her as an adulterer REALLY added depth to her story and it was one of the first big moments that defined her character independently of Lorelei or her grandparents.

I think this scene does a REALLY good job at showing how people react when they feel bad about something they did. Almost always people who are feeling the way Dean did (like he was a bad husband, like Lindsay would find out he’d done something wrong, like his marriage was a mistake) try to make the person they’re fighting with feel those same feelings. So all the stuff he said had the intention of making her feel like a bad wife, that she was the one who made a mistake, that their marriage was a bad decision. It’s just really cool to me to see this mirroring technique executed so flawlessly on television like it is in real life. In summary: Dean sucks, but the writers nailed it
So I'm tryna understand why a teenager, barely 16, was mature enough to speak to the mother of his girlfriend about being understanding to ensure a solid relationship turns around and cheats on his wife remorselessly? Such a dramatic change... I sometimes loathe writers who destroy a well established character to make the story more interesting (?) only to end up screwing the arc...
I think the reason why they made Dean so shitty later on is that the audience really loved him but the writers didn't have any stories left to tell about Rory/Dean. So they made him a jerk so people would root for Rory/Logan.

And Lindsay is clearly trying to make teh marriage work out so for dean to say that they both think the marriage is over to Rory, is just awful. Dean is a crappy guy.

You’ve seen how he acted about the play at Chilton, and when Rory wanted to do more extracurriculars for school, and him throwing the first punch at the keg party even though he was dating Lindsay then and it wasn’t his business at all. Not to mention the other hostile encounters he had with Jess, like the fight in town square or when he was ordering for the construction workers. Or all of the other times he butted into Rory’s life after they broke up? How he threatened to “take” Rory from Jess the same way that he “took” Rory from himself. Him, still married, refusing to leave Rory’s dorm when she asked him to because she wanted to have a private conversation with Jess? Or how he told Lindsay he didn’t have time to go out with her and her friends but was suddenly free to “save” Rory from a bad date AND instead of taking her home right away he stayed and did the same thing he told his wife he had no time to do. I’m sure he went home and lied about that as well. Just because we only see this particular argument once doesn’t mean it’s the only time it’s happened. Rory is a jerk but she didn’t force him to do any of that. He made an effort to pursue her and he made the choice to cheat and to lie to maintain it.

I think it was that Rory had chosen Jess and then gone to a big school, and he felt like he needed to move on from her and also do something with his life - and because what he always wanted was that wife that prepares dinner for her husband and etc., he thought he might skip to the happy ending of his story and move on by marrying Lindsay.
Rory straight up told him in high school that she left him for Jess because Jess was the bad boy and that turned her on. Dean was way too nice. Dean got smart and realised the only way to get with her was to become the bad guy (cheat on his wife)
