'As a generation, we don't acknowledge color, but we know that the race problem is still there.' Part 4 of the USA TODAY Network's 'Changing Face of America' series looks at Millennials' attitudes toward race and diversity: usat.ly/1sh158f
Interesting points.... Yet some one said "racism" exists on both sides. Which sides? Does it refer to white & black therefore leaving out everyone else?? ... Before the revolution in the 13 english colonies the rest of this country was moderately populated by native Americans or Amerindians... Then the Spaniards and Portuguese came soon after with Roman Catholics (no such thing as Italy back then) and a varied group of Mediterranean Europeans to discover and explore the new lands, some conquered etc.... In the end once the Anglo Protestant English colonies revolted in an uprising that led to a Declaration of Independence, in 1776, North America was already as diverse as it could possibly be. Most don't want to know yet there were Muslims of middle eastern descent present during the revolution on the Colonial side, Jewish migrants, French (Latins), Spanish, Blacks from the Caribbean and central Western Africa, Orientals in low numbers yet they were already in the continent.... Soon after the young nation grew, fought wars against the Native Americans and expanded westward where the French "sold" Louisiana to the new country, eventually Florida the once Spanish Empire jewel of the east coast was ceded and sold to the US government in 1819.... Kept expanding west, "Indians" (Native Americans) kept being slaughtered during the westward move of expansion, most died of diseases brought by the Europeans and Africans of all sorts and colors.... The annexation of the Republic of Texas gave way to a war against a brand new nation called Mexico that had just changed its name from New Spain due to their struggle to appease the "Indians" Native Americans in their side ... the Mestizo culture flourished there while on this side there was a strong racial divide. The civil war broke and the emancipation proclamation was set to free all slaves in the ex Confederate States, while the Union states and western territories had no slavery.... Moving forward the transcontinental railroad expansion towards the Spanish California's now just acquired, brought many migrants from China, the south sea areas and some Russians, the latter mainly for the gold rush in California and Nevada, later on in Alaska. By the turn of the century and at the dawn of the 1900's hundreds of thousands of new Italians, Sicilians, Portuguese, other Spaniards, people's from the Balkans, Jewish and such came every year following the steps of the Irish, Slavs and other Germanic ethnics that had come soon after the civil war to make a new home. WWI then soon after it stalled due to the Great Depression, yet soon after it resumed, this time we had acquired Hawaii, the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands... Of which after WWII we lost the Philippines, Cuba long before that, yet gained many islands in the Pacific... Becoming more diverse and multicultural, from the Eskimos, Native Amerindians and Aleutian peoples within Alaska, from the Pacific Islanders, Asians and Hawaiians from the great Pacific territories through the Spanish of the Old California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico territories with its Mestizo and multi Amerindian cultures (still strong to this day). Through the plains where many German, Irish, Poles and Slavic peoples migrated to farm and live, past the Texas basin and lands where el Vaquero led to the Cowboy, Mexican & Anglo culture mixed with a Native American and Mestizo twist through the southern states where Black Americans have a lot of history, both good and bad, to the land of sunshine Florida where the oldest city in the US Saint Agustine has been lived in since the Spanish first settled it in the 1500's them being the first whites the Natives set eyes on in that area... Through the mid Atlantic states where Quakers and other Anglo descendants have deep roots at times beyond the revolutionary days, some to the time of the pilgrims in the far north east... Dutch and English settlers etc.... All of us make The United States of America. Not just any one group in particular, not all whites are the same (ethnicities etc) not all blacks either (a great number are descendants of migration post slavery days, while some from the Union States where slavery was illegal. Asians and Pacific Islanders have been here a long long time, Hawaiians, and the Native Americans of which suffered the most, nearly were wiped out, vastly by famine and diseases brought from the other continents, yet many also were murdered and slaughtered by the "newcomers", be it in the name of religion or whatever. Hispanics well it's an ethnicity therefore can be of any of the races, white, black, oriental, native, pacific etc, and are ever more present all over. The melting pot, true diversity, we have come a long ways, true, we still have divisionism, some have racial issues regardless of color, others is religion Islam vs Christianity, Judaism vs Christianity or Islam (Muslim), within Christianity so many diverse groups, and a small number of Buddhists, Hindus and others..... Yet we are still better off than many other nations of the world. Realizing that the American culture (many different meaning to all of us) is ever changing since 1776, in many ways should only make us stronger, yet we must focus on educating ourselves better, to understand one another instead of the other way. Yet there will always be those who desire to do harm regardless ...
Diversity of race, culture, ethnicity, gender and etc. is great and all but one thing I didn't really hear was diversity of thought and opinions. having a different point of view is similar but doesn't always mean their thought or opinion on something is different. I have many close friends who don't always have the same opinion about a topic as me and sometimes being challenged on your thoughts can help you create a stronger argument or even persuade you to change your mind.
Diversity means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. Why would I want everyone to be the same? How dull.

Can't change when people aren't open to see people of color as equal. I been over 100 years where the change
The racism exists on both sides, *****
Katia Garcia I hope so for the sake of Mankind. We haven't evolved much from the cave man.
Katia Garcia too bad it won't be in our lifetime. I deal with neantherthals everyday.

I grew up with diversity so I prefer it but people who didn't shouldnt be forced, it should just happen naturally
Define "forced diversity" in a social context for me.
