Girls High School Sports in Crisis!... Iowa HS Girls Basketball the Canary in the Coal Mine?

I had the opportunity to observe a girls high school basketball tournament this past week. I was shocked to see the disparity in the skill sets of players all at the varsity level.
I later read a article discussing why high schools in Iowa were disbanding their girls varsity basketball programs. Something seems broken. Is this jus anecdotal, am I overreacting? If not, what can be done?
