"You could have done that before!" Yup. Women often don't fully grasp what they can do with their skills and training. Former reporter, here. I remember interviewing 3 high school seniors at a vo-tech high school who had just won national awards in an architectural design contest. Two were girls. The guy bragged about how he threw his project together the night before the deadline and laughed off his award. He said he planned to be an architect. The girls described their designs in detail and had put several weeks into each of their projects. As girls/women, we know not to take success for granted. Asked what they planned to do after graduation, one said she had a job at McDonald's and was going to save up to go to school to be a beautician. The other said she wanted to go to college to get a teaching certificate. One girl's mother was a hair stylist. The other girl's mother was a teacher. Both professions have value, obviously. But girls still aren't seeing how many exciting and GOOD PAYING opportunities they have today. The world is so much bigger than many of them imagine. I know, I know, this is a stand up routine, and I LOVE this guy. So funny, so talented. But that little exchange with the neuroscientist/gonna-pitch-pharmaceuticals woman in the audience just triggered that memory of the high school kids.
