The worst part about being a local is getting requests from friends/family to meet them on the strip when they visit Vegas. Best part about being a local, is showing said friends/family how cool Fremont Street is. When they come back to Vegas, they always stay at a casino on Fremont instead of the strip.

I went to Vegas for the first time in October. I was told to stay downtown and definitely glad I did. It was a blast and had so much fun. We stayed at the Plaza, it wasnt loud since we were on the backside. We went to the strip for 1 night and didnt enjoy it at all. When I go back it will always be Fremont St.

I now walk with a cane. I’m lucky if I get out of bed.😝
When I was 16, I walked all over Vegas and the strip but back then there was nothing for a minor to do except go to coffee shops in the casinos.
On Saturdays I used to walk down to the Showboat and watch televised bowling on ABC live and then I would go to a mini mall, buy used books, go to Baskin Robbins and across from our apartment was a 7-11 & I practically drank an ocean of Slurpees.
During the week I would take my books, walk to the Fremont & have dinner in the coffe shop & do my homework & go home. A family friendvwas the slots manager & he would comp my dinner.
I also used to go to the Brodway shopping center on Maryland Parkway and used to eat at the Bonanza steak house which was where they built the MGM Grand.
When it was too hot my parents were getting the car and they drive me to the casino I would shit like hobby shop or just walk around and watch thing you could walk around the casinos you just couldn’t gamble if you were a minor and I would also go sit by the pool and watch people I loved watching walking through the casinos Never knew what you were going to see if someone will be shooting craps or playing blackjack or yelling and screaming it was exciting and different for a young kid.

I agree with you slot play on the strip is short and depressing. I’ve gone to Vegas to the strip 8 times and haven’t seen one payout to anyone. I’ve gone to Fremont on my last trip and saw 2 payouts and myself had a lot of fun playing because the seem to let you have some fun with your money. I think I won some money but I know I hadn’t lost.

Thanks for the video! We stayed at El Cortez on our last trip and we’ll never stay on the strip again! Highly recommend Le Thai, Pizza Rock, 8 East, and Atomic Liquors. The buffet at Main Street Station was surprisingly great for the price. Loved the Neon Sign Museum. Nacho Daddy was overrated in my opinion. Some of the most fun to be had gambling in all of Las Vegas is Sigma Derby at the D.

The one benefit of walking downtown that he didn't mention is the protection from the hot sunshine during the summer! Fremont offers shade that you just don't get on the strip ⛱ Also, you can find free or validated parking much easier downtown, besides reduced or no resort fees on rooms. Yes, some hotels are not sound proof and the noisy sounds from the shows will turn some folks off trying to sleep. But the hotels do offer ear plugs to help.

As much as I love Fremont, there is one thing you need to keep in mind that CAN be considered a negative. It's loud. There are not many hotel rooms that are quiet if you want to sleep before 3AM. The south tower of the Golden Nugget are good, especially if you are in a south facing room. The El Cortez tower facing north is pretty good. Maybe the new rooms at Circa might be better insulated for sound? No idea.

Getting a quiet room is as easy as making the request when you make the reservation. The best rates are on Priceline which has a Special Requests field where you can request a quiet room, a refrigerator, coffee maker, even extra pillows. Downtown hotels are happy to honor requests.

I stayed on the strip for years and just recently tried staying downtown at Circa. Well, now I’m hooked. Circa is a strip priced hotel, but it’s very nice and feet are not killing you at the end of the day from walking. If your games of choice are the tables, your money will go further downtown with the lower minimums (except for Circa) and you have access to so many different casinos. You can always take the deuce or a cab down to the strip if you want. We just got went in November and it was a blast. Downtown is great!

I've been to Vegas twice. 2019 and last year. 1st year I stayed at Four Queens and last year stayed at Circa. My room at Four Queens was on the 14th floor but it was on the side where the stage was located. I didn't care since I'm a night person anyway. My room at Circa was on the side opposite of Fremont but you could still hear the bands playing. One quick tip though is that if you want to save some money hit the liquor store on Fremont then grab a coffee cup on your way to the room. Dark coffee cups work well in hiding alcoholic beverages (just saying 🥃).

Ther is the Mob Museum, The Jerky Store, and tucked slightly off Fremont St, is a great toy store. Also within walking distance of the Container Park. Even if you are staying on the Strip, get a bus pass and take the bus down (The Deuce), head to the upper level for a better view. Bonus they sell booze at streetside bars!

One of my grandest memories in life was the time I drove a Mustang convertible (with the top lowered, of course) down Fremont Street at night. (Fremont was one-way, traveling from southeast to northwest, ending at Main Street.) You could actually feel the heat coming off the signs in front of the casinos from all the incandescent lights. It was an otherworldly experience. This was in 1992; I believe Fremont Street was closed off in 1994. Las Vegas may have gotten glitzier, but not really better.

    1. You don't spend half your day walking. 2. Food prices are more reasonable 3. Better gaming conditions 4. Live music 5. Hotel check in never takes more than 15 minutes. Honestly unless it's a first trip, you're looking for lots of over the top luxury, you play live poker, or you're looking for a nightclub scene you should really give downtown a shot. There are some really nice rooms available at the Golden Nugget in the Rush Tower and at Circa. If you're a really light sleeper stay a half block away at Downtown Grand, California, or Main Street Station. I've spend a couple hundred days in downtown hotels. On an extended trip it's easy to jump between comp offers, just walk a couple minutes to the next hotel.

Hotel are a bit dated as expected and noise can be loud and an issue at night depending on which side of the hotel you're at but a great experience for being near all the action and fun!

The one time I stayed downtown I booked a couple nights at four Queens and during the first night I ended up canceling the rest of my trip and rebooked at sunset station because it was seriously way too loud.
There are a lot of fun places down there I'm not going to lie and if I ever did stay downtown again I would probably stay at the Golden Nugget

downtown was my first experience for vegas. that was back in 2012. i bussed down to the strip and walked from one end to the other and back to downtown which was not a good idea LOL! i spent about 100 something on bottle water and when i got back to the nugget i dropped 20 in a slots to and won 100 so I was happy.... i dont know whats changed but i wouldn't mind going back and staying somewhere along the strip the next time i visit.

Great video. Was wondering about this area. Can see why the locals like it better. Not as many tourists! Simpler. Also cheaper. The Mob Museum looks interesting. I personally love more character in a place. The Strip can be good to just see at times out of curiosity. But to stay it would be better in this area. So that way you can see both worlds. Fremont and The Strip.

The downside about staying in downtown Fremont Street is the parking. If you’re staying at the Golden Nugget for example you have to get there early to find parking. Everyone that works at the Casino‘s downtown have to park at other garages at other hotels they cannot park at the one they work at🤪 so you are in competition with everyone else for parking. Plus the locals and you have a huge issue and a busy night especially Friday and Saturday.

I have always loved Fremont street, even before the canopy and first stayed when there was the Holiday Inn around the corner. I don't think you were born yet. My, now, husband even lived on Fremont in the 70's. Just past the casinos. I have played lots of Four Queen and Binion Blackjack with locals. It is a different world now. Still try and go down every trip, visited both Donut Bar and Oscars last month (yup, you looked good in that Oscars video!) Watching the light show from that center banquette was something I will always remember. That said, It has gotten too loud, crowded and crazy filled during semi post Covid and is insane. Hate all the folks trying to not 'sell' pictures. I am frightened walking around. So I think I will keep making strip reservations for the foreseeable future.

Good informative video Jacob. For last 10 years or so I've tried to get reservations at 4 queens, Have also stayed at the plaza and el Cortez. Haven't seen Circa yet, because of covid issues (not myself, thank goodness). But restrictions, travel issues, etc.
