That was awesome. One thing about makos, they are built for speed and stamina. Great whites are tired after a breach, but a mako can continue on. Makos are also more dangerous when breaching because they can land on a boat, causing damage and possible physical harm to people inside the boat.

Actually saw this happen from a slight distance yesterday in California - saw something leap from the water twice (from maybe 1/2 mile away), then our boat went back to investigate and found a Mako shark circling a half-eaten sea lion

What a beautiful jumping mako, I had mine this last Feb on a pier. A 7 footer jumped out and cleared at least 3 ft above the surface. I cut the leader then released it. It jumped two seconds after I set the hook, 40 yards from the pier.

LOL. “Jumping out of the water as a hunting strategy”. I can’t believe they said this. Ambushing prey from below is the strategy. Them going airborne is the result of that type of feeding behavior.

"Monster" mako. More fearmongering titles from Discovery. It's not a monster; it's a fish. It doesn't even seem to be an exceptionally large specimen. There are dozens of better titles that would be both alluring and accurate. What about "Mako Rising"? Or "Missile Mako," something like that? We've got more than enough lurid fiction about "monster sharks." Discovery ought to distinguish itself from that. "Great White Serial Killer" was another preposterous and demonizing title for a series of your docs.

Anyone else think the breaching shark looked suspiciously like a small GWS? Like _too much_ like a GWS? I know large Makos look _a bit_ like GWSs, but the proportions were almost identical. In the water shots, the shark was definitely a shortfin mako, but above the water ... I'm not so sure. Maybe their "impossible" mission proved just that, and the producers thought, 'let's just use a small Great White. If we use the correct angle, ain't no one going to notice.' If I'm trying to distinguish between the two then I look at the teeth (distinctive differences) and the eyes (again, differences), but this angle doesn't allow this, and we spend most of its air time looking at its belly.
Maybe I'm being a little conspiratorial, but it would not be the first (nor the last) time that TV people have tried to fool us to justify their expenses. Besides, the Discovery channel isn't exactly renowned for accuracy.
