Probably my last Alice in Chains video for this year. What other topics should I cover?
I think a cool video would be a fact or fiction type video about all of the crazy Ozzy Osbourne stories. Like snorting a line of ants in a parking lot or biting the head off of a bat on stage. There's many more crazy stories about Ozzy's younger years.
The story of Insane Clown Posse covering Let's Go All The Way by Sly Fox and their effort to get it played on TRL.
Sunny day real estate please !
the full story as to how the Strait Up album came to be and how much of it actually existed before the vocalists came in and how much was catered to the individual artists
Mad season !
I’ve been listening to Mad Season a lot lately Wake Up & River of Deceit
So bad ass cranked up
My two favorites from that album. Still have it
Great album!
The mad season album was a supergroup masterpiece, and it deserves to be played, and talked about.
Kudos to good taste.
I think a lot of us are… just walked up to my buddy last week and noticed he was listening to Mad Season by the album cover on his phone.
Not a day goes by that I don't think about Layne,Scott and Chris. I miss their voices,I miss their songs. I miss living in a world that still had them in it.
Don't forget Chester.
Same bro, and Chester❤️
And Kurt.
And Elvis and Graucho and Zeppo and Chico and Deez, Deez Nutz and Ligma, Johnson that is, all amazing oxygen breathers at one time. Time and gravity always win eventually.
@@archstanton4365 😂👍👍good one! You're really clever!!! Cheers!!!!LMAO!!!!! 🤣😂🤣😂
I always figured "Your Decision" was about Layne
I think alot of that album is about losing Layne & AIC.
What a poignant thing for Elton John to do. Layne was such a talented artist. This is one of the best videos you have done, imo. Thank you and great job!
I knew Layne, (and Demri). Learning of his death really hit me. I still have a couple of his autographed self portraits.
Can these self portraits be seen somewhere?
Sorry for your loss! 🙏🏻
Yeah, wait a second. I had to reread that. Layne drew portraits of himself then signed them and gave them to friends and fans? I agree with @reemerger. If you felt uploading a cell phone/camera snap of one and post it to an image host, that would be really cool to see. I'm having a difficult time imagining what that would look like
Treasure those portraits, they are truly special, and you're lucky. ❤
Wow wish I owned one!
Imho, AiC was the best band to come from Seattle.
RIP Layne, such an iconic voice
I just love how after having mocked Layne years earlier, Hetfield gets onstage with AIC and proceeds to absolutely butcher Would, demonstrating just how little vocal talent he has compared to the person he mocked.
Haha, I thought the same thing!
Yeah Layne got em back later though he called them Mascaraca!
James made his apologies. That's why they're all friends with AIC. They've played together since and still to come. He didn't hit the notes, but I appreciate a humble man trying his best. It's an impossible thankless task.
Didn’t the lead singer of Metallica also go in and out of rehab centers numerous amounts of times, with included relapses in alcohol consumption? The guy seemed nothing more than a thrash metal self-righteous and annoying false proclaimed macho-macho fuc*-boy. (YT censorship sucks horribly)
I always felt that "Cold Piece" from Jerry Cantrell's Boggy Depot was about Layne. The sadness in that song and it was recorded a few years before we lost Layne.
Yeah, but Jerry was addicted to alcohol and coke and Sean had to essentially drag him to rehab so some could apply to himself to.
Thank you so much for making this. The world needs as much Layne & AIC content as possible. Layne still gets me through all the good and hard times to this day. He will continue to live on forever. I saw Jerry live in LA at the Greek a few weeks ago and he was everything!! So cool to be in the presence of a legend. Can't wait for Jerry's new album I Want Blood dropping in October. Hopefully we will get another AIC album and tour too in 2025.
The world needs to know and experience AIC and Layne. They'll be better off for it.
Hate to say it but heroine was Laynes full time gig. Alice in Chains was just something on the side.
“Why’d you throw that at ME?!”
👃 🐈⬛ 💩
That was funny, or I thought it was 😂😂 I heard a lot of people in that audience was PISSED at James about that!!
@@kdsmoke stupid
I was getting in my car, at McDonald's when I heard the news. I was raining softly, as was I. 😢 It did indeed rain when he died.
Not to totally crap on what you said, but he had been dead for at least 2 weeks.
@@JohnGuffey-ho3xc Then why did you say it? Have some respect! Fucking people!
I still remember hearing about Laynes death when me, my girlfriend and the kids were driving up to my grandparents an hour north from my place, they announced it on the radio local rock station here in MN. His death really stung!
I remember where I was when it was on the radio announcing his death. I was deep in my own addiction and the news stunned me.
I don’t think anyone predicted anything. Layne was desperately ill by 1993, rehab in 1994-1995 and collapsing backstage in 1996. By 1998-99 he had lost so many teeth he couldn’t sing. His death was inevitable and absolutely tragic. People loved him and did all they could for him.
was going to say, predicting a heroin addicts death is not exactly clairvoyance. I didn’t know his teeth fell out thats terrible. And then our govt invaded Afghanistan so they could control the opium market making drugs like oxycontin possible. war on drugs my ass
Desperately ill in 93? Ok
Great clip, nicely mixed!
@@83reggieTyeah 93 statement isn’t right he was on tour then
@@83reggieTYeah, he was heavily into drugs in 1993 but managed to kick the habit for awhile before picking it up again.
My post war favorite band!
Alice and Chains was the soundtrack to my departure from the military and returning home back in the 90's.
I was at the show in Atlanta in 94 or 95 and remember Metallica making fun of Alice and playing about 15 sec of Man in the Box. They got Suicidal Tendencies and Candlebox to replace them on tour, but I never did get to see AiC live.
I was hopelessly addicted to heroin for years...I have always related to Layne. I wish he was still here because he was a beautiful soul, no matter how dark things got, he was beautiful❤️
Cantrell always likes to be coy as to what he's writing about but I truly believe there are a couple of songs on Boggy Depot and the Degradation Trip albums that are both messages to and about Layne.
And while they never really said, I'm pretty sure 'Black Book of Fear' by Mad Season on the 2013 release is about Staley.
Great video. You say “admitted” a whole lot in places it doesn’t belong. Like, “he admitted he met him on Halloween”. There’s nothing to admit, as that has a connotation of a reticence to say it. “He met him on Halloween.” I dunno, I’m autistic so I had to say it.
To be fair that would hardly make you nostradamus though...I predicted his death, I think everyone did.
I predicted this video was going To end in about 5 minutes after only watching for about 10 minutes.
What James Hetfield says or thinks does not matter 😅
Plz skipp that jazzhole.
Thank you for sharing this story with us! R.I. P. Kurt! R.I.P. Layne! And to all have passed due to addiction! 🙏🏻
Our pleasure!
@@rnrtruestories 👍🏻😊
Nancy is such an amazing person. Ill still send her emails on holidays. Her and so many people are trying to help those in need. Its beautiful.
People think Kurt defined grunge, but it was Layne all along.
Layne’s passing wasn’t covered very much due to Left Eye’s (TLC) death around the same time.
One of your best videos. Thanks for covering this one
Glad you enjoyed it!
After Demri died Layne threw in the towel.
You can hear it on Mad Seasons album
Zak Wylde ‘I never did that drug stuff’ as he drinks alcohol non stop🤦🏻♂️
Awesome content bro. Really good idea here. Well done sir.
Thanks!
Great job on this one… Very interesting topic, with several things I was unaware of!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@rnrtruestories - your channel is a gold mine of rock & roll trivia, it’s so good!
My wife knew him, Demi and Mike along with Andrew Wood. So sad.
Lanigan sure was his "friend"...and by "friend" I mean dealer.
Layne - wish I could’ve met him. He deserved better than to die alone like that.
He wanted that. I guess people don’t realize it. His pain was “self chosen”. He said it himself.
He deserved better? His own bandmates couldn't stand him.
Can't believe dude was gonna title his song ABOUT Lane Staley 'Kurt'. WTAF?
I never thought the song‘Would’ could sound crappy until I heard James Hetfield butcher it on here. Good God!
"LAYN " By Zakk Wylde, Black Label Society is a hell of a track and I would suggest it to anyone who's never heard it.
RIP LAYNE! Never knew this song was about Layne and the connection with Elton John, that is too powerful.
I forget all about hidden tracks in albums, like Can You Take Me Back on the White Album. Apparently Train in Vain by the Clash used to be an unlisted hidden track as well.
Year of the Spider was a great Cold album. The Day Seattle Died is, yeah, truth
I cried through this. AIC was one of my most favorite bands, and Layne was amazing, he had a unique sound that can only be described as one of the best voices in rnr, ever. Its a shame and a tragedy that he isnt here today.
I hope wherever he is, hes found love, and peace.
everyone predicted his death.
to be fair he ended up lasting longer than i expected.
Lanegans sing backwards and weep is an excellent book.
It’s best listening to Mark read it on audiobook. You can really envision the scene through his voice/words. Those guys were all messed up. Sad, really.
I did like Alice in Chains songs I heard on Muchmusic and radio back in the day but I didn't seriously get more into them until probably after Layne's passing and the reunited band with the new singer
Same, every few years I re listen to their catalog, it’s awesome every time!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Jerry Cantrell is so incredibly talented. AICs last album is my favorite as I find it to be their least pop sounding album. You can tell Layne was in a dark place and fed up with the industry that imo had a lot to do with his death. Too many ppl wanted Layne to get sober bcuz it benefited their bank account rather than actually caring about about the man that made them so much money smh…
You mean the Tripod one, yeah, that was hopeless sounding and cool at the same time.
Yes Jerry rules. I do love Laynes voice but Jerry really was the backbone of the band. Layne had a amazing one of a kind voice but without it Jerry it would be nothing. It’s like Johnny marr and the smiths.
10:07 Les Claypool :D
“Your Decision” is your favorite AIC song of all time? C’moooon..
RIP Layne. There is no Alice In Chains without you.
It's a cope take.
I said one of my not favourite that one goes to rain when I die
@0:00 I was there... I saw this broadcast... I WAS CRUSHED. RIP Layne Staley
When he asked "why did u throw that at me?" the guy shoulda said "cuz you're a giant douchebag!" Ugghhh I've always disliked Metallica
You missed "Bleeding The Orchid" from The Smashing Pumpkins on ZEITGEIST.
Basically my favorite channel. Great video. A retrospective on the Nymphs would be cool
I feel like "31/32" from Degradation Trip could also be on here. "Now you're most likely to end up dead alone in a hotel room."
Oh man....I was only 15 when Dirt was released and loved it so much...CD era and only just building up my own collection instead of listening to my brother's albums so I listened the full album a lot....never failes to capture me...
Should've been called, "Grief gives way to Guilt." All that puking is psychological knowing he's partially to blame for Lanes' sad demise
I always thought Chris Cornell's song Through the Window was about Layne but could never find any information to anywhere to confirm that.
Never forget Andrew Wood, who’s death preceded all these Seattle frontmen
I remember when AIC released their first visualized video of Rainier Fog. When i saw that man, i immediately thought of Layne, the Layne of 1996.
By the way, i remember the first time i heard Last Man In The World, back in 2011. I still had no idea about any theories about Kurt or Layne, but still... the lyrics for me were so powerful. The overall vibe of the song is so special. Like it's sad, but it isn't "obviously sad". In my mind, i made myself the idea of you saying "Farewell" to someone, but not like the obvious sad/painful pattern of melody or lyrics.
Let's imagine when this person you know "has to leave", you are aware of it, and a train arrives to "this station" (This Life), and this person boards this train. And you know that once this person boards this train, you'll never see him/her ever again. So you say "Goodbye, it's was nice to meet you" with a gentle smile on your face, trying to hide the sadness, and keeping the good memories with you. It's a calm, warm, afternoon, being greeted by a gentle breeze. Something like that the song evoked to me in my mind. So when i learned about the background, and how much i also admired Layne, i remember i listened to it again, and all i did was to shed tears in silence.
Mark was such a great artist, and quite an interesting human being. I feel like the world is a colder place without them around anymore...
You forgot "Layne to Rest" by Katastrophy Wife which is Kate Bjellands from Babes in Toyland other band. It even refers to the story of her jumping on the hood of their tour bus, (she says car in the song though). That story is included in DeSola's book Alice in Chains : the Untold Story.
"There He Goes" by Pearl Jam is also rumored to be about Layne.
I have a playlist that is just tributes from other musicians about him. I'm glad you included "Bargain Basement Howard Hughes", it really tells of Jerry's regrets of how he treated Layne, by never taking it seriously and the anger he showed especially during the last recordings together of "Died" and "Born Again".
Great video ♥️♥️♥️
Before watching this i can think of two... maybe 3..
Eddie vedder with his song i think it might be titled the same date of laynes death
Metallica (didnt go to album)
And aic.. id say your decision is about layne
Yup got those in the video
@rnrtruestories i was just typing off the type of my head before i watched the video and yep u got every one which i figured you would.
I love your stuff bro ive been a sub for god... at least 2 to 3 years now.
Thank you for replying!
@rnrtruestories You were asking about video ideas in another post, mine would be
60s or 70s stuff like beatles or beach boys.
The beach boys and charles manson connection.
80s.. Im sure a b52s video would do great too.
Thanks for all you do we love your vids ❤️
I say this as a huge ALICE fan since 91. Predicting Layne's death after the unplugged show was like predicting the queen of England's death when she was 96. It was inevitable. Everyone knew what he was going through, knew he was not going to stop and therefore knew his life was going to be short. The unplugged show was like watching a man sing at his own funeral. It was heartbreaking and it kind of amazed me he lived 6 more years after that. I listen to the new ALICE records, especially black gives way to blue and dinosaurs and just imagine how good those songs would sound with Layne. William is great, that's not what I am saying. It's like wanting to hear Andy Wood's version of dollar short.
I've always interpreted the entire double album of Degradation Trip as Jerry's apology to Layne and attempt to reconcile with his death, their conflict, and their brotherhood. As someone who's lost quite a few dear friends, it hits me pretty hard.
Could argue that Check my brain is partly about Layne. It’s about overcoming grief, loss, acceptance of demons/a past and learning to live with it/them. “Tears that fill my bong, years expended gone” I’m almost certain that has more to do with Layne than anything else. BGWTB is a theme album, it’s about living with pain/grief/loss and crawling through the dark that comes with it and coming out the other side a different person.
Edit: there’s also tones of anger and resentment which are stages of grief
The title song from Jerry Cantrell's "Degradation Trip" is amazing and may not be about Layne, but it definitely seems to be. Check that one out.
Shout to you for getting people on the piano mix of black gives way to blue. That and the version of I stay away with the orchestra is seriously some beautiful ass music lol
There's a lot to enjoy about life, as much as i like layne
The reality is he chose to be weak and do dugs that made him weaker and more depressed
He shouldnt bitch about anything while he was using depressents and other substances that ruined his mind and health
He chose that when he could have chose a healthier and happier path for himself
Not everyone has the clarity and strength though
Laynes decline was just natural selection of life
On AiC final recording ever with Layne (Get Born Again ) he had no teeth. The lyrics were changed so that minimal lisping would be heard but you can still hear his teeth less vocals in the recording. BTW, the recording session took hours to get him in the vocal booth because of how much he was nodding off. Very sad.
I remember when Layne died. I didn't feel the shock that you normally feel when someone you care about passes away. Due to the inevitability of it all, I had years to process that before he even passed. It just left me feeling completely defeated. My friends and I went to the park that night, popped a roll and smoked a joint, and just listened to AIC until the sun came up. It wasn't the greatest tribute to a guy that died of an overdose, but what else could we do? The entire situation sucked. This guy inspired an entire generation, and he died alone and no one even noticed for two weeks. That's the part that bothers me more than anything. Even 20+ years later, that's the part that I still haven't been able to process. Regardless of his choices or the mistakes he made, no one deserves that.
Layne to Rest by Katastrophy Wife (Kat Bjelland of Babes in Toyland other band) is so sad. It didn't predict Layne's death, but it was written as a tribute and song of mourning. Kat and Layne were really close at one point and I'm sure being someone who has had such similar experiences with addiction made his death really hit her hard.
I like how Jerry said "they are still with us".
It couldn't be more true
I'm never gonna not comment on a Layne video even when I'm late as Hell!. I love and miss you, Man. xoxoxo
Thank you for posting this video. There were a lot of questions I have that you answer to.
I'm a simple man, I read Layne Staley, I click
Never knew the guy, but he had such an impact on me that I named my son after him.
I'll forever miss Layne 💔
“Layne’s Addiction”… sorry, I had to do that.
"Icarus flew too close to the sun, but at least he flew." - Laura F.
Locked On, also from Degradation Trip is probably also worth mentioning
So is Bargain Basement Howard Hughes
"Icarus flew too close to the sun, but at least he flew."
That’s why James hettfield will never understand what real rock vocals and culture is. If he knew, he wouldn’t have said he don’t know why Layne went down the road he went down. Layne’s music and vocals were pain and he needed pain. Listen to Mad seasons river of deceit.
Lol, James Hetfield doesn't know real rock vocals and culture? James Hetfield of Metallica lol
You also seem to think Hetfield didn't have his own addictions, pain, and problems. When he talked shit about them he was probably drunk...
"DRUG AND ALCOHOL" IS A LIE!!!!
"why did you throw that at me?" D:
The post Layne Alice song When the Sun Rose Again off Bkack Gives Way to Blue ALWAYS hits me as a dedication. Hits me harder that way, more so than the album's title track.
Alice deep dive. Best band ever
Just when I get off the ledge and start feeling ok this shit appears. I miss Layne. Best vocalist ever in my opinion. Try to do less depressing please. I'm running out of comidians
Get a grip. Are you that sad that you can’t deal with life because a famous person died?
James Hetfield 🤦♂️
Wake up….. Mad Season..
Layne by Spectre tapes
The most beautiful song written about Layne is Last one in the World. What an amazing tribute to the man.
Keep it down. There’s far too many doucebags jumping on the Lanegan bandwagon after he died. Don’t mention Shawn Smith either, 2 of music’s best kept “secrets”.🫢
@@JohnGuffey-ho3xc I don't mind, Lanegan's catalogue is so beautiful and mending it deserves to be heard by any soul and it isn't mine to keep. Maybe some asshole will shed his douchiness and evolve thanks to his music.
Jerry is cool but the band just wasn’t the same without Layne. Just like blind melon, it was just a shell of a band after his death.
It definitely sounds like Layne had a rough way to go in the end. I don't think there's anything worse than the addiction he was going through.
Read mark lanegans book...it goes quite in depth with laynes progress through addiction...heartbreaking
I am Sorry. But people knew what he was doing. And if they were his friends they would kicked the door down to help their friend???? RIP LANYE
they did. multiple times. including his mother. security was hired to keep him away from smack on tour. you can't help someone unwilling to accept it. anyway, do some research before accusing people who lost a loved one. ' I'm sorry' lol
Unfortunately you can't force anyone to stop.
Time to take a break from all of the AIC videos....
It's a BIG world out there with plenty of other good and talented bands!
I still have people asking me 'anymore Alice in chains videos?' This is probably my last one for this year.
Jesus… same topic again… 🥱
Beautiful thing about RUclips is having the ability to not watch something if you think the subject is boring
For me… the 90’s were AIC for me. There were so many powerful, talented bands… but AIC and Layne, specifically, really did change my musical landscape.
