“Moonlight” is a coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Barry Jenkins, based on Tarell Alvin McCraney's unpublished semi-autobiographical play “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue”. It was released on October 21, 2016, by A24, and stars Trevante Rhodes, André Holland, Janelle Monáe, Ashton Sanders, Jharrel Jerome, Alex Hibbert, Naomie Harris, Mahershala Ali and more. The film grossed over $65 million worldwide against a production budget of only $1.5 million and received much critical acclaim. In 2017 at the 89th Academy Awards the film won for Best Picture, along with Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali, marking the first Muslim to win an acting Oscar, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney. It had a total of eight nominations, including Best Film editing for Joi McMillon and Nat Sanders making McMillon the first black woman to be nominated for an editing Oscar. “Moonlight” has been cited as one of the best films of the 21st century with praise towards its editing, cinematography, score, Barry Jenkins' direction and screenplay, the performances of Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali and the film’s handling of blackness, sexuality and masculinity.

Super proud of a fellow FSU alumnus for directing this film. I remember they showed this film continually at the school's theater. It has a ton of depth, glad you guys like it.
The tag line of in moonlight black boys look blue fit so well… the duality of Black becoming the Mirror of his only male role model Blue.

Love this movie because it showed a different depiction of gay people. Sexually is a spectrum and gay isn’t always overly flamboyant nor is it hyper masculine. I know more Kevins in my real life than how black and gay is normally shown. The parental relationship was pitch perfect coming from a product of a mother with addiction. I appreciate that they showed his mother’s humanity even through addiction. All 3 versions of little felt like the same person all credit to the actors.
