No worries Chief, happy you managed to get here, there's no rush for any of my suggestions but I felt sure you would appreciate this masterpiece and you reacted much like I thought you would, it was great watching you get into it. Jari the lead vocalist is all the more amazing when you consider he lost half a lung to tuberculosis when in the military. You were correct about Kai, he was given the music and penned the drumming himself, he's an amazing drummer and is now with Nightwish(went there for a vacation as the joke goes lol). Jukka on bass is standing in for Marko of Nightwish on their present tour also. "Time" is as much a masterpiece as this, I'm sure you will enjoy. Keep up the good work bro, terrific to see your channel grow🤘

Kai -The Human Metronom - (and since 2013 drummer of Nightwish) is really a beast.
All of them are technically on the highest possible level!
When I see Kai at the end wiping off the sweat I always have a strange thought: I can her someone saying from the off: Oohh, sh... the camera wasn't running. Let's just do it again. Kai? Everything ok with with you?" ;-)
The section about which you asked if it was all palm muted - it is a mix of palm muted alternate picking (up down) interspersed with a couple of open notes, legato hammer ons (not picked, the left hand strikes the strings) and mini sweeps (where the pick plays adjacent strings in the same direction.)
It's all pretty bloody hard to do when you bung it all together.
I've played for over 40 years and am fairly competent. I took one look at the tab for this song and thought "nope". Polyrhythms, syncopation, compound time and some savage stretches... it would take a year of daily practice to get even close to this insanity.
Teemu Mäntysaari (the guy playing that bit) and Asim Searah (took over Jari's guitar playing and not in the video...actually I think Teemu is playing Jari's parts and Asim Teemu's but I am not sure) are giving Skype lessons and might teach a trick or two how to accomplish this feat ^^

Actually Asim took jari's part except for solo and teemu playing his own part plus jari's solo in their live shows so teemu actually didn't have to change his playing much

We have Bach, Mozart, Chaikovsky, Wagner and other genius musicians in classical music.
We have Wintersun in metal at that level, in my humble opinion. They have technicality most can't reach. They have musicality most can't reach, i dare to say, even greatest of metal rarely may surpass. Attention to details, orchestration, melodies and interchanges, vocals, harmonies. Emotions they have and they bring...And it's metal af! What could be more metal than vikings on their drakkar on their next raid?
For me, it's nothing less, but a mastercraft. It's been in my playlist as soon as i discovered this song, and it will stay there for years. Modern classic status worthy.

Oh Chief...I laughed so much watching your reaction🤣🤣🤣 I always want to go into a Viking battle or so haha. Jari, the singer, composes all their music. This song had 1600+ tracks that had to be mixed!😂 And Kai happily banging away on his kit! 🤣 He is soo good! When he left for NW his successor had to simplify the drumming a bit 😂. Interesting that Saul requested this before "Time." I guess if you want to follow album order then go with "Land of Snow and Sorrow" next and "Time" after that (all from the Sonic Pump session). The whole album is a monster, so why not?

I just love this band ...Jari's vocals are superb, Kai is also the drummer for Nightwish now. The band is just brilliant.
Every time I here this track ...and all the others I am transported with them. I become a "Son of Winter and Stars".
You are right about the song Time it is another brilliant song and title track of the album Time 1. Another track to check out is Land of Snow and Sorrow....yet again it gives me the chills.

I know everyone's already pointed out that Kai is in Nightwish now, but there are a couple other projects he's supplied percussion for that you might be interested in - both of which also include Tuomas from Nightwish - Auri, and Darkwoods My Betrothed.
Auri is a very folky, atmospheric music group composed of Tuomas, Troy (yeah, from NW), and Johanna Kurkela (Tuomas's wife). They've just put out their second album, and Kai laid the drum tracks for them. This is the first single, Pearl Diving: ruclips.net/video/jiD_YdKCYTk/видео.html
Then going in a complete 180, Darkwoods My Betrothed is a Finnish death metal group (that I admittedly don't know much about) who just named Tuomas as a full member of the band (he was their session keyboardist going back something like 25 years, this coming album is their first in decades) and Kai laid the drum tracks for them as well. Jari Mäenpää was the frontman of Ensiferum before he formed Wintersun, so there's songs there with same thermes, same kind of musical storytelling and epic atmosphere. Songs like Lai Lai Hei, Little Dreamer, Token Of Time, Guardians Of Fate and Battle Song, After Mäenpää's departure, Ensiferum has gone on making similar songs (E.g. In My Sword I Trust, Victory Song, From Afar and Rum, Women, Victory).

I believe Kai is playing a standard 4/4 beat throughout most of the song but the chorus is in 3. Jari loves 3/4 and 6/8.
What makes Jari's main line singing with all those huge soaring notes and holds, is that he's singing with only 1.5 lungs. He had to have part of a lung removed after he contracted tuberculosis while doing his mandatory Finnish military service, and he still sings like an absolute monster. Imagine what he'd be like with 2 full lungs :O

Funny, I was just wondering what you feel about the Finnish names. Well, the creator of the band, Jari Mäenpää.... "Mäen" is the genitive form of word "mäki" - a hill. "pää" usually means just "head", but also the end point of something, in this case I'd believe it's the top of the hill. Someone else may have another point of view, but the words in the Finnish language often can be interpreted differently depending on the context.

If you get a chance at some point listen to the entire album in one go as each track leads into the next one and will take you on one huge journey. There are 5 tracks (not counting the 'hidden' track lasting a total of 40 minutes but 2 are interludes / openings to other tracks so only 3 have vocals ranging from 8 min 21 sec to 13 min 31 sec.

I'm nowhere near a drumming expert. But the reason you were thrown off by the beat was because the guitars play in a 3/4 timing, while Kai plays a 4/4 timing. Every 3 measures they end in synch again.
Perhaps someone else can explain this better than I just did... but the effect remains the same.
