  • Average electricity bills have been high lately, thanks to fuel issues that drove up supply costs. Some utilities - including National Grid, in Massachusetts - are proposing electric supply rate cuts come summer. But supply is not the only thing you pay for. Sometimes delivery costs are the biggest part of the electric bill. So where does that money go? And how can you save on electricity without getting scammed or sacrificing reliable service?
Kana Ruhalter explains where you have options, as well as some major pitfalls that could result in even more money out of your pocket. It turns out just looking for the cheapest electric supplier is not always your best bet, unless you know what else to look out for.
You can compare electric supply rates between alternative suppliers in Massachusetts at energyswitchma.gov - but be sure to watch the video to know what to avoid.

This video is the result of several questions posed to us about electricity rates and regulations in Massachusetts. The questions were submitted for a collaboration between GBH News, NEPM in Western Mass and CAI on the Cape, in which we're asking whether Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey's priorities align with the issues that are top of mind for you. Go to our website and tell us what you think her focus should be: www.wgbh.org/news/healey-agenda

It’s absolutely ridiculous. National grid is charging nearly double (.17 kWh) my supplier cost for electricity (.10). Reform is needed.

Good information. I would add that the state has a net zero emissions law. Therefore they allowed utilities to upgrade system with delivery fee. This doubled your rates. Massachusetts also eliminated many fossil fuel power plants and nuclear. Unfortunately the solar and wind systems are not up to the task. So double whammy lack of supply and new state laws makes Massachusetts double the cost. In short, it's government decision

Very professionally made video quality! I live about 100 feet over the MA border in CT. I signed up for a 36 month supplier, but CT prohibits cancellation fees. Seems like a good deal. When I read about people in other states paying about $0.10 per kWh do you think they’re including or ignoring delivery charges? Do some utilities charge little to no delivery charges? Thanks much.

The high cost of electricity in Massachusetts has a lot to do with the cost of natural gas, since we still rely on it for a good fraction of our generation capacity. We're really failing at harnessing the abundant natural resource that is off shore wind. Clear the regulatory hurdles and provide financing with reasonable rates to developers! Instead we're letting projects fall apart.

Video completely ignores the “why” and so pointless. Electricity situation in Massachusetts is a catastrophic failure and great example of failed far left policies. Close all power plants and charge normal people 5x the cost of other States. Brilliant idea!
