I've actually read a book that kind of started like this. The first book in Larry Correia's Monster Hunter International starts with the main character getting attacked by his boss who was a werewolf, the main character fights back, shoots him a few times, beat him with a fire extinguisher before shoving him out a window and then dropping a desk on him.

The terminal velocity of an old man flying sideways (assuming he is only flying sideways and nothing can make him move up or down) is 0, terminal velocity is the point where gravity and air resistance are balanced. the sideways force imparted by gravity is 0, and thus it would only be balanced if air resistance is also 0. Air resistance being 0 is only possible if he is in space, or he is not moving.

Incorrect; it's the point where acceleration in the direction of travel (normally gravity when the direction is toward the ground) matches the sum of all resistive forces (mostly drag, as you pointed out). Because he is distinctly not moving toward the ground the relevant force would be thrust instead of gravity. Moreover, even if he is traveling sideways, the force of gravity is not 0, it's still 9.8 m/s^2 regardless, as it always is at all times anywhere on/near the surface of the earth. Therefore, "the terminal velocity of an old man flying sideways" is just about the same as if he were falling straight down, approximately 55 m/s. Not that terminal velocity is any kind of limit on his possible speed since he's clearly traveling much faster than that immediately after most of these launches.
