  • July ??? 1996
    The Pyramid Long Beach State Arena
    Long Beach, CA
    No Boxscore
    Statline: In about 38 minutes: 36 points, 5 assists, 9-22 FG, 1-2 3PT, 17-21 FT, 7 TO's
    Background: This was another one of Kobe Bryant's rookie Summer Pro League Games. Unlike the SPL game against China, this game was played in an NBA-like 48 minute game split into 4 quarters. Once again, most of these games were never broadcasted by the NBA but were filmed by scouts and teams for player evaluating purposes. The game is filmed from a fan's viewpoint, no scoreboards, watermarks, replays, or play by play announcers.
    Note: Kobe Bryant, who was not even a legal adult at the time, is wearing number 32 in this video
    Note 2: Derek Fisher is also in this video as number 9

    makes you relize how special kobe is, look at the hype Wiggins and Jabari are getting and they are no where close to this, not even close. Did anyone in this summer league look as good as this Kobe?

      Not to discredit Kobe on this one but nobody in VSL this year was putting up shots like this. Who knows how the '14 rookie class is going to turn out to be but from what I saw nobody was shooting over triple teams and doing the things Kobe was trying in this game

    • @calvindaniels9061
      @calvindaniels9061 10 лет назад +7

      kevinseveneleven these new age kids don't have the same killer instinct as the 17 year old Kobe. That's why they don't put up as many shots. Etc.

    Kobe game was like Jordan back then....look at the video, his swagger, his look, his fade away, the way he's built, the way kobe walks, plays defense, just like jordan

  • @MEDICI92
    @MEDICI92 9 лет назад +72

    This is really amazing. Kobe had all the skills from day 1. The ballhandling, the footwork, the jumpshot ... and then the incredible coordination/quickness and explosiveness. Really very impressive stuff. People cheapen Kobe's success by attributing it to a "killer instinct." He definitely has a killer instinct, but more importantly, he has the shot-creating, one-on-one skillset and athleticism to dominate defenders. WIggins will be an allstar, and others will be good, but few current NBA players -- besides KD, Kyrie, Melo, and KD -- have the complete offensive scoring skillset that Mamba has

    • @ExileOfSand
      @ExileOfSand 9 лет назад +6

      Peter B. funny enough even KD, Kyrie, and Melo struggled hard in SL and they were all older than him. They became great, but its just a fun perspective to realize Kobe was 17 years old and already had an all-star level game and skillset just as a rookie.

    • @MEDICI92
      @MEDICI92 9 лет назад +15

      ExileOfSand Its really pretty ridiculous. Kobe is probably the most skilled offensive player ever

    • @MEDICI92
      @MEDICI92 9 лет назад +7

      Have to disagree. Kobe had an amazing first step from day one. He literally blew by defenders and dunked on them basically whenever ... just look at his dunk on Dwight Howard and Ben Wallace and against minnesota. He's arguably one of the greatest in game dunkers ever, but it gets overlooked because of his incredible skill. Kobe was much more dynamic than drexler as an athlete. MJ is arguably the GOAT athlete in the nba, but kobe was really just a notch below.
      His last five years speaks to how skilled he is, because looke at jordan's 14th and 15th seasons ( i know he was older but ... stilll) with the wizards. The fact that kobe was still a viable MVP candidate from 2010-2013 is pretty incredible.

    • @c0011j
      @c0011j 9 лет назад +2

      +kidkoppe So that makes it even more impressive what Kobe has done considering he had less athleticism than his counterparts he is so frequently compared to.

    First time I've watched his summer league video. He moves just like a seasoned MJ here. Never seen a teenager with this type of skill set on display. It's just pretty watching him play. He was held back in his rookie season as they limited his minutes. Allen Iverson won Rookie of the Year but you knew Kobe was going to be challenging MJ for the best player in the game.

    • @3fanAI
      @3fanAI 10 лет назад +2

      Im a kobe fan. To play all his career on 1 team would be great story. But listen to this what if they traded kobe to the knicks for amare expiring contract to play with phil again along with melo as a player and fisher as a coach. Iman shump, JR smith, jose calderon, tim hardaway jr, cleanthony early ect. They would be immediate contenders in the east. All they would need is a big to be legit championship contenders. What a great story would it be for kobe to play with phil again and for them to bring NY they're first championship in 40 years. And Im not even a knicks fan at all but if that happened i would watch every knick game. To me this sounds better than kobe and the lakers struggling and barely making the playoffs the next 2 years.

    The entire time in watching this I'm thinking, how the hell did this kid look THIS good and Del Harris refused to give him minutes? Lakers could have started winning earlier if Del let Kobe make his mistakes and grow on the court, rather than sitting on the bench for the first couple of years.

    • @s_ame1135
      @s_ame1135 8 лет назад

      But sitting him a couple of years made him a legend tho. MAYBE benching motivate him more. If he was given the minutes then MAYBE he'll never try to be better anymore. Plus, LAL got prime Eddie Jones, who's a star, at that time.

    • @ronswanson3417
      @ronswanson3417 8 лет назад +1

      I remember Eddie Jones. He was good, but there is still lineups where Kobe could have got more minutes. He was playing 15 a game his rookie year! That's absurd. I gotta gently disagree on it making Kobe a legend. Yes, it motivated Kobe, but a MILLION things have motivated Kobe. Del Harris didn't motivate Kobe to become a legend, Kobe did. You may have watched Kobe Bryant's Muse, but he talks about stuff motivating him back when he was a kid. I don't think this Del Harris scenario changed much for him, Kobe was going to be a legend regardless.

    • @RahulPresentsKobe
      @RahulPresentsKobe 7 лет назад

      Kobe went on to say that during his 62 vs the Mavs, he was sticking it to Del Harris for benching him all those years. So he was definitely pissed as a rookie.

      As a very long time Lakers fan, I've watched Kobe since he came in and he was just going 1 on 4 most of the time and would force shots quite a bit his first few years. Part of that was because they kept keeping him on the bench for so long, it was like letting loose the Tasmanian devil. Had he gotten more playing time he would've settled down thereby play more in control. He was a bit out of control only when first entered the game but he always settled down.
      You have to remember they intentionally held him back 2.5 years by having him come off the bench. Even though the lakers acquired him during a time when most of the league thought it was ridiculous to draft a high school guard, they still shared that view as well. They felt he was too young and wanted bring him along slowly.
      The FACT is that the lakers played BETTER whenever he was on the floor. I have several recorded games on in which opposing team commentators remark about it.
