The Pyramid Long Beach State Arena
Long Beach, CA
No Boxscore
Statline: In about 38 minutes: 36 points, 5 assists, 9-22 FG, 1-2 3PT, 17-21 FT, 7 TO's
Background: This was another one of Kobe Bryant's rookie Summer Pro League Games. Unlike the SPL game against China, this game was played in an NBA-like 48 minute game split into 4 quarters. Once again, most of these games were never broadcasted by the NBA but were filmed by scouts and teams for player evaluating purposes. The game is filmed from a fan's viewpoint, no scoreboards, watermarks, replays, or play by play announcers.
Note: Kobe Bryant, who was not even a legal adult at the time, is wearing number 32 in this video
Note 2: Derek Fisher is also in this video as number 9
Kobe and Fisher kicking ass since their first summer league
makes you relize how special kobe is, look at the hype Wiggins and Jabari are getting and they are no where close to this, not even close. Did anyone in this summer league look as good as this Kobe?
very true. Kind of amazing to see how much more advanced kobe and lebron were as highschool kids. Just another level from the competition.
Stevie Steve Parker can put down 30+ cheeseburgers, thats for sure.
if kobe came out in todays nba as a rookie , he would be the biggest story as the new mj coming out to the draft
Not to discredit Kobe on this one but nobody in VSL this year was putting up shots like this. Who knows how the '14 rookie class is going to turn out to be but from what I saw nobody was shooting over triple teams and doing the things Kobe was trying in this game
kevinseveneleven these new age kids don't have the same killer instinct as the 17 year old Kobe. That's why they don't put up as many shots. Etc.
Kobe game was like Jordan back then....look at the video, his swagger, his look, his fade away, the way he's built, the way kobe walks, plays defense, just like jordan
almost better
This is really amazing. Kobe had all the skills from day 1. The ballhandling, the footwork, the jumpshot ... and then the incredible coordination/quickness and explosiveness. Really very impressive stuff. People cheapen Kobe's success by attributing it to a "killer instinct." He definitely has a killer instinct, but more importantly, he has the shot-creating, one-on-one skillset and athleticism to dominate defenders. WIggins will be an allstar, and others will be good, but few current NBA players -- besides KD, Kyrie, Melo, and KD -- have the complete offensive scoring skillset that Mamba has
Peter B. funny enough even KD, Kyrie, and Melo struggled hard in SL and they were all older than him. They became great, but its just a fun perspective to realize Kobe was 17 years old and already had an all-star level game and skillset just as a rookie.
ExileOfSand Its really pretty ridiculous. Kobe is probably the most skilled offensive player ever
Have to disagree. Kobe had an amazing first step from day one. He literally blew by defenders and dunked on them basically whenever ... just look at his dunk on Dwight Howard and Ben Wallace and against minnesota. He's arguably one of the greatest in game dunkers ever, but it gets overlooked because of his incredible skill. Kobe was much more dynamic than drexler as an athlete. MJ is arguably the GOAT athlete in the nba, but kobe was really just a notch below.
His last five years speaks to how skilled he is, because looke at jordan's 14th and 15th seasons ( i know he was older but ... stilll) with the wizards. The fact that kobe was still a viable MVP candidate from 2010-2013 is pretty incredible.
+kidkoppe So that makes it even more impressive what Kobe has done considering he had less athleticism than his counterparts he is so frequently compared to.
+kidkoppe kobe handle is better than MJ. MJ didnt do crossovers or anything just footwork in the post.
First time I've watched his summer league video. He moves just like a seasoned MJ here. Never seen a teenager with this type of skill set on display. It's just pretty watching him play. He was held back in his rookie season as they limited his minutes. Allen Iverson won Rookie of the Year but you knew Kobe was going to be challenging MJ for the best player in the game.
Kobe. Understood the assignment. Debut game. Honor the past. Staying present. Well done Kobe.
I was there for this! Holy shit, can't believe it's on RUclips. Kobe was unbelievable, even in warm ups you could just tell he was a level above everyone else. By the way, the environment at the Pyramid was awesome, not as corporate as the league in Vegas.
What was the hype like for him as a rookie
@@lee9315 The hype wasn't as great as you would think. High school players weren't still a thing, so there was a lot of wait and see. In LA, though, they seemed pretty pumped about him.
That fisher dunk was pretty sick. Damn.
Rookie Kobe was more fundamentally-sound than modern-day Lebron James.
Let media tell it Kobe anit shit
The D riding is crazy
It’s crazy how “more fundamental sound” Kobe is less efficient in every metric than “modern-day” Lebron
Why is Kobe way less efficient than lebron ? You’re comparing 44% to 51% the edge is insane .
@@Ma1q444Kobe Bryant is far better than Lechoke James. Y’all always reading a stat sheet. Watch basketball
This Kobe is wayy wayy better than any rookie to date!!
Antonio Alanis anthony davis had a better rookie year.
rawimpact thats not what he means lol he means as far as being ready to play in the NBA on an elite level besides Lebron. If Kobe actually started his rookie season and went to a team like the Hornets who he was originally supposed to be drafted by that dude would have averaged 28 his rookie year and be #1 all time scoring.
rawimpact Im just saying that their will never be another rookie or player as great as Kobe, Kobe is in the same breath as Jordan, Anthony Davis is good but hes not a Kobe nor is he a MJ, feel me?
+rawimpact Well in Kobe's defense, he was benched his entire rookie season because they had a legit SG star at that time and kinda stacked too. Whereas Davis, as a rookie, was already the primary scorer for his team.
yall saying anything
This guy is so special, and to think his career will be over in two years, maybe sooner if he gets re-injured. I know i wont miss a game, super happy i got to watch a large majority of his career, can't say the same for Jordan, but a at least i saw the next best thing...
Sad thing lakers will be trash this year and probably the next. Would love to see kobe try to contend. At least we saw his whole career.
3fanAI I know man, i am sure Laker fans would hate Kobe leaving, but as much of a Laker fan and kobe fan i am, i would not mind seeing Kobe play with a contender to win one last time.
Im a kobe fan. To play all his career on 1 team would be great story. But listen to this what if they traded kobe to the knicks for amare expiring contract to play with phil again along with melo as a player and fisher as a coach. Iman shump, JR smith, jose calderon, tim hardaway jr, cleanthony early ect. They would be immediate contenders in the east. All they would need is a big to be legit championship contenders. What a great story would it be for kobe to play with phil again and for them to bring NY they're first championship in 40 years. And Im not even a knicks fan at all but if that happened i would watch every knick game. To me this sounds better than kobe and the lakers struggling and barely making the playoffs the next 2 years.
He the GOAT, not surprised
Derek Fisher had them young legs attcking the rim at 5:28 daaaamn
Haha true.
5:25 did fisher just do that O.O
my nigga fisher just blew by that nigga like D rose with a poster finish too omg had that white boy witha come over looking around
Couldn't be!!!!!
Yeah Fisher used to be crazy athletic his younger years.
Here after reading 3 Ring Circus
look at those fundamentals..are you kidding me?? My Idol...
RIP kobe. You were always destined for greatness and now you're in heaven balling it up with Gigi. Rest easy my man.
🙏🏼
Anyone notice that monstrous dunk Derrick Fisher threw down about 5:27 into it? D Fish was a beast for his size and relative obscurity coming into the summer league.
It was so nasty 😮
Even back then when he was so raw, his footwork was amazing. I know hindsight is 20/20 but how on earth did 12 other teama not see he was going to be a special talent? Jerry West basically said the same thing based on him seeing Kobe workout twice
Every scout from teams 2-12 should’ve been FIRED. Hell even the Hornets lol I get AI going 1st. But even then.. like c’mon!
Because Lakers get insider help that's why they always seem to draft the best players
Three ring circus brought me hetr
Facts
Same... pretty good read so far.
It feels really weird hearing his name now RIP KING👑 🤴 🐍🐍!!!!!
was that fisher with that jam at around 529!?
Yes it was!
ahahh yeah
Kobe was ending careers, hopes and dreams out there. lol!
IMO, this is the greatest basketball thats ever been played, kobe at age 18 in rookie summer league, this game and SPL vs china, you will see the greatest moves ever made by a basketball player
Going back and watching everybody’s summer league highlights since watching bronny’s
lowkey same🤣
he looked so polished coming out of high school.. his footwork, holy fuck.
He's probably the youngest one out there, but it looks like he's playing with a bunch of kids.
He was the same age as MJ as a senior in HS right here lol
I like the part when you hear the guy say ,"He's actually pretty good"
currently reading Three Ring Circus and had to come see this footage.
never knew kobe wore # 32, good addition thanks for uploading.
Imagine a player playing like this in the summer league now the internet would break and the hype would out of this world.
Thank u for uploading this gem
God damn!!! this is my first time watching a "will be MEGA star hall of famer" in summer league.
What a difference compared to the rest of the kids I've seen the last 10 years. NONE of the "special" kids in the last years were THIS good on day 1, not even close. Damn!
LeBron wasn't the best in his summer league and look at him now.
Crazy how much things have changed in 20 years. This is home video and now these same games are nationally televised
Outstanding upload.
Sweet rare upload man.. props!
Fuck the 36 points, Derek Fisher just sucked the gravity right out of the building! 5:24
Amazing this was 47 years ago today

Look at those arms swinging at 1:50
Mr. Fantastic.
RIP TO THE LEGEND
Looking like young Kobe out there!
Damn he would score on 5 people in the summer league? This kid will be great in the NBA.
If this young kid keeps working on his game he has great potential
D. Fish slam.. damnn.
What was the time on that?
nick arndt 5:25
ElChino988 thanks mayne.
He was leagues above those guys ...
Imagine this kobe look better than lebron ever did offensive package and defensive stability yet new niggaz dont like the fact that real reps say Kobe is 2 goat
The entire time in watching this I'm thinking, how the hell did this kid look THIS good and Del Harris refused to give him minutes? Lakers could have started winning earlier if Del let Kobe make his mistakes and grow on the court, rather than sitting on the bench for the first couple of years.
But sitting him a couple of years made him a legend tho. MAYBE benching motivate him more. If he was given the minutes then MAYBE he'll never try to be better anymore. Plus, LAL got prime Eddie Jones, who's a star, at that time.
I remember Eddie Jones. He was good, but there is still lineups where Kobe could have got more minutes. He was playing 15 a game his rookie year! That's absurd. I gotta gently disagree on it making Kobe a legend. Yes, it motivated Kobe, but a MILLION things have motivated Kobe. Del Harris didn't motivate Kobe to become a legend, Kobe did. You may have watched Kobe Bryant's Muse, but he talks about stuff motivating him back when he was a kid. I don't think this Del Harris scenario changed much for him, Kobe was going to be a legend regardless.
Kobe went on to say that during his 62 vs the Mavs, he was sticking it to Del Harris for benching him all those years. So he was definitely pissed as a rookie.
KOBE the GOAT!
the world acknowledges kobe as the basketball prodigy
GREATEST PLAYER ALIVE
Young goat gone but not forgotten. What a beast. RIP KOBE AND GIGI
Kobe > Lebron hands down. Imagine these two together on the same team with Shaq. Yikes.
5:29 Derrick fisher with the throw down
Kobe is above their level. You can literally see it.
Kobe will always be the greatest to ever do it
RIP Kobe 🙏🏿☝🏿
The fact that he was just 17 years old
Man...Kobe is working the croud!
From the start u could tell he was gna be great in the future.
nice video mate, pretty rare
Kobe crazy skilled at 18. And fish with the powerful throw down! 96 was a great year! 👍🏾🎯🤝 🏀
Crazy thing is this is summer league 96 , summer league usually takes place in July , Kobe didnt turn 18 till August , he was 17 out there looking like a 5 yr pro
If someone like him came out on any of the first round drafts they would for sure get a starting gig on ANY TEAM in the league.
So sad, Kobe's rookie season went to waste riding the pine.
As a very long time Lakers fan, I've watched Kobe since he came in and he was just going 1 on 4 most of the time and would force shots quite a bit his first few years. Especially his rookie year. I think you might be forgetting that Eddie Jones was starting ahead of him and at the time, Eddie Jones was pretty good.
+neaAkuma Eddie jones was a monster back then
Part of that was because they kept keeping him on the bench for so long, it was like letting loose the Tasmanian devil. Had he gotten more playing time he would've settled down thereby play more in control. He was a bit out of control only when first entered the game but he always settled down.
You have to remember they intentionally held him back 2.5 years by having him come off the bench. Even though the lakers acquired him during a time when most of the league thought it was ridiculous to draft a high school guard, they still shared that view as well. They felt he was too young and wanted bring him along slowly.
The FACT is that the lakers played BETTER whenever he was on the floor. I have several recorded games on in which opposing team commentators remark about it.
Dale Harris was an idiot... It (i.e. Kobe not seeing playing time) was an issue all season long, and even in his second and third seasons. It's the main reason Dale was fired. Kobe wanted him gone.
amazing share
This fucking is the superstar
kobe went postal as a rookie, he was rocking the mj baldy.
Kobe is in top 5 greatest clutch players ever.
A MAGICIAN
so cool seeing kobe and fish playing in the summer league together, knowing they’d win 5 nba championships together
i wish kobe was this aggressive nowadays
Ayo btw we gotta show d fish some love for that poster 😂💀
from the get this man was great unbelievable
a great kid.. will be a future superstar someday
the play starting at 5:09 oh my!!
KOooobeeee BRYANT
It’s crazy how Kobe was the #1 ranked HS player in America and his high school career and rise through the nba ranks is barely even talked about smh. It’s almost like a huge part of his journey is lost in history. Same goes with MJ.
5:15 owned :D this stuff is great, young Kobe at the beginning of a career :]
And I wish Fisher could dunk like he did in this video. Just be glad that both are much better now than they were then.
What a journey! Miss you my hero!
