My father, Michael Egan, was an assistant coach under Gregg Downer during Kobe's time at Lower Merion. I grew up hearing stories about games like this, amazing to have access to the footage.
They did everything they could to prevent him from taking over the game w/ double and triple teaming him. Despite it, Kobe did what they feared; he took over the game. Even then, you could see his greatness!
I read about this game the week it happened. Cathedral decided to run a Triangle and 2 defense against him. Basically created that Defensive scheme just for him. So he was double teamed AND had a triangle defense behind that. And he STILL put up those numbers. Well done Kobe!
The game before this Kobe was dominate. Lower Merion played Chester in the PIAA Eastern Conference Championship at The Palystra in Philly. I was in attendance....
