Mavericks @ Lakers, December 20, 2005 | Just one of many awe-inspiring spectacles of Kobe's career. Personally, I think this performance is just as good, if not BETTER than what he would showcase about a month later against the Toronto Raptors. At the peak of his scoring powers and following a tough loss to the Rockets where the Lakers put just 74 points on the board, the stage was set for KB to deliver a once-in-a-lifetime performance. The visitors were the #1 seed Dallas Mavericks who entered the game with an 18-6 record. These Mavs would go on to sustain the best record in the league that year while advancing all the way to the Finals, so this didn't take place against just any team. After a 32 point first half by Kobe, one would think he could top 60 by the end of the game, but even that may have seemed like a stretch. What happened in the third quarter was far beyond what anyone could have expected. It turned out that Kobe hitting 60 was not only far from a stretch, but he wouldn't even need four quarters to accomplish it. The team that toted the league's best record and 11th best defense looked on helplessly as the locomotive going full speed at their neck erupted for 30 points in the 3rd quarter alone. As if scoring 62 points through three quarters wasn't mind-boggling enough, add to the fact that one player outscored an ENTIRE TEAM by himself through 3/4 of the game and you have a scenario that would have been ludicrous to even suggest beforehand. At the pace Kobe was scoring, he could have topped 82 points at the end of regulation....

+Micah Sharon There is more talent in the NBA, versus with Jordan. There's Durant, Curry, Harden, LeBron, and so many more. You have to be better to be the best, in comparison to when Jordan played.

Not in my opinion, the speed of the game has grown a ton. Back in Jordan's era it was a bunch of old white guys in daisy dukes who were slow and could barely dribble the ball in between there legs. Nowadays everyones fast and can play well, and I lived in LA so I watched every lakers game and Kobe was almost amazing every single game

In order for kobe to win mvp it had to be clear cut obvious like in 2008, anything close he would have lost 100 percent of the time. Even in 2008 they were tryna find reasons to give it to chris paul.

Kobe gets close lined while going to the basket and points a finger at the person who did it.
Dirk gets hit by an inadvertent elbow and shits a brick, picks up a technical, and his coach proceeds to get himself tossed out of the game.
Kobe was poised and in control, the Mavericks as a team were not. That is why Kobe got 25 free throws.

Kobes basketball iQ is amazing. I still can't get over how he jumped straight into the chest of the defender to get his lay up and to force contact. It also takes the defender essentially out of the play because he is using his body to push him back and open the floor for an easy lay up and from the defenders position an offensive foul can't be called. I know it seems like a small play but it was all I could think about the whole video. He did this all in a split second reaction. Just wow.

@@chess9799 there’s more to basketball than scoring, and even at that, Jordan was the more dominant offensive player. Kobe was prone to have historic games as these, but for every game like this, he would have 4-5 games of putting up 18-20 points on 5/20 shooting. Kobe never led the league in steals (Jordan did three times). And Jordan was a better shot blocker. Jordan in his prime (1987-93) was much quicker and a much better athlete than Kobe ever was.

In some ways, this game is more impressive than the 81 he would score against the Raptors about a month later. This Mavericks team would go on to advance to the Finals, losing to the Miami heat. ALSO, when he leaves this game, he has more points than the same 3rd period mark where he would eventually score 81. MEANING, he could have potentially scored more than 81 against a final's caliber team. He had only scored 53 by the end of the 3rd quarter in the game where he would go on to score 81. where, obviously, he had 62 at the end of this game against the Mavericks where he left the game in the 3rd quarter. He scored 28 in the 4th quarter against Toronto. The only reason Wilt still holds the record is because Kobe set out the 4th quarter in the game against Dallas.

Funny, how the national media try to minimize this mans complete dominance. Kobe was in a league of his own, that’s why he did things no other player could do in the history of the game. People bring up Wilts 100 point game to try to discredit Kobe’s 81 point historic game. I remember a time if a player scored 50 points the national media would hold that in reverence. Kobe destroys those games and he’s discredited. Kobe should have at least 5 league MVP awards. If you’re the best in the game then you’re the MVP period! I don’t want to hear about team accomplishments, that was designed to give other players like, Nash, Duncan, Lebron, and Dirk Kobe’s MVPs. Kobe led the worst team in NBA history to the playoffs. Name another team who talent like Smush Parker, Kwame Brown and. His Mims in the the starting line up in the playoffs.

Lakers 5 game winning streak at the end of the reg season put them in 7th place. But damn! Kobe made the Lakeshow watchable from 05-07. And still making the West playoffs. 81, 62, 65, 60, 60 with the opposing teams throwing double, triple, quadruple to Kobe he still find ways to score. Just like the Raptors game where He let Kobe play even if the game was over a long time ago. He did it for Kobe. True, let's be clear about something here : Kobe saved the day for the Lakers. He took over this game and he was spectacular. But the game was over in the middle of the 4th quarter and Kobe had already scored about 60 points if I remember correctly. That means he scored about 20 points in the last 6 minutes. And you might argue that the Raptors could have miraculously come back in the game at that point (I don't think so but let's assume it) but when Kobe reached 70 with 4 minutes lefts and +15 for the Lakers, the game was over. He had a new career high and the game was over. But Phil wanted to give him a chance to go as far as he wanted because he understood Kobe. In the garbage time, the last 5 minutes, the game was basically Kobe playing 1 against 5 and the only interest of the game was to see how many points he would have scored. Everybody knew it, including Kobe. That's why some old school coaches didn't like it. Pat Riley didn't like it if you remember...

As physically gifted as he is I honestly believe he maxed his physical gifts to their fullest potential on the basketball court. He plays the game like no one has ever seen before. if anyone had Lebron James physical gifts they still wouldn't play the game of basketball as well as Lebron James plays it. In other words Lebron uses his body better to play basketball better than anyone could if they had his body.

Yea, not only did kobe score over 60 but he scored more than the whole mavs team. Lebron only wish he could do that.

He is so aesthetically pleasing. He moves like a dancer, so smooth on the floor. Every steps seems so elegant and every move seems so perfectly choreographed.

He averaged 45% of his shots. That's efficient for a shooting guard.
