    Would be cool to see an environmental impact analysis of van life. Seems bad at first being on the road all the time, but maybe the smaller footprint averages out or overcompensates?

    • @LeahandLevi
      @LeahandLevi  Год назад +24

      Yeah we’ve looked into it a bit actually and it’s kind of hard to say for sure but the costs are different right? Maybe more solar power in a van but gas, less recycling/compost in a van but less stuff overall, it also depends on how much you move and what your home life would look like. Interesting eh?

      @@LeahandLevi This is a very important question. I have analyzed this equation for years with embedded energy, mpg all plugged into spreadsheet and compared to tiny house, average size houses, travel by air etc. Results? I had to face an inconvenient truth for the van if considering putting on any significant miles..or maybe for travel altogether. If one is a local van lifer doing few miles in an old van and staying put for long period then it could be tops and way ahead of the average unsustainable American way of life, but a small net zero house in walking distance to work and store etc comes out FAR ahead. So I resisted the van now for years, BUT I'm an old guy and there is a lot of embedded energy in this ICF tiny house where I live, but comparing the nearly infinite life of a concrete house with very low kwh use and a decade or two for a van on the road the kwh per year difference is incomparably huge. Crunch your own numbers. Hard to make it come out, but then again will it matter?? So, I stay home and watch you guys and smile. Enjoy!

    Hey Levi and Leah! I'm building out a van and I have a separate drinking water faucet and filtration system from Acuva. From what I've seen in most vans, most people either put some type of filter on the faucet (i.e. Brita or equivalent) or have a filter attachment on their hose when filling their water tanks (i.e. Camco or Clear 2o). Hope this helps! Thanks for all of the amazing content!

    I am extremely excited to see the next videos.
    Quick solutions to the issues they had in this one:
    Always ask about if the water is drinkable and safe (not their fault, but now you know).
    Use a hard surface, like a wood board, on top of the bed to convert into a make shift counter top for indoor cooking. Best used with "no flame" cooking method for obvious reasons.
    For drinking water: many different solutions, but I would get a water filter design for chemical removal and attach it to the faucet. Then you can just fill up that main tank and then only drink from that faucet.

    Full-time vanlifer here. I do have a fear of accidentally contaminating my water tanks so I am mindful of where I get my water from. That said, potable water is EVERYWHERE. There should be no reason to have separate drinking water or additional filtration other than taste or preference.
    I installed a drinking water tap in our van cuz we liked the idea of a consistent taste. One of the filters broke when I was trying to change it and haven’t been using filtered water since. Especially cuz the BC water is so delicious. Burkey, Britas, and filters are still great. But this van company is dumb.

    Seen many van builds and have been in several class c rvs. The water should be potable. Chance is they don’t maintain the fresh water tanks and keep them sanitized so they tell renters it isn’t potable. The fact that it comes out of a faucet at a sink means it is supposed to be potable. I wouldn’t rent from them especially since they didn’t inform you that you shouldn’t drink the water when you rented it, that’s shady. Also, I think there were propane bottles in back so you could put the stove inside to cook and use the table for prep space and stove on sink area. Also that’s really small. I know you want minimal, but you should be able to store food in your living space in case weather gets nasty or bugs are bad and also your clothes too. Go to van meet ups and ask about the pros and cons of their build and why they feel that way. We have a 27’ class c rv but the actual living area is 24’ so that is something to consider. We also have a full side slide that makes it spacious but we had a 65 lb and 35 lb dog with us and my partner’s teenage son with us a couple times. When we rent ones before they were larger, but I didn’t feel comfortable to drive it and that also limited where we could park, so we went with something 6 feet shorter and it made such a difference.

I experienced that type of bathroom in 1985 when I lived for a month with Canadian rhythmic gymanst, Lori Fung, in the Serdica hotel in Sophia Bulgaria. I was her piano player and we were there so she could train with a Bulgarian coach. The worst part about the triple-S bathroom was that when you had a shower, everything in the bathroom got completely soaked, including the toilet paper roll. Hey, if you need an inviting place to boondock in NW North Carolina my husband and I would be happy to have you- and if you're in the Prius still, we could arrange a bathroom for you to use and some potable water. ☺️ Just let me know, but happy to oblige. We are just west of Winston Salem- about two hours from Asheville and maybe an hour from the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway.

    I'm surprised there aren't more "I told you so's" in the comments. Weren't you quite critical of van life when you were first converting your Prius? Now you're thinking about purchasing one. There's nothing wrong with changing your mind of course but, I would have liked to see that acknowledged in the video.

    • @LeahandLevi

      I don’t think we ever said that vanlife was stupid or that we would never do it? Also… I’m not sure what we would have acknowledged? Haha that vanlife is more comfortable than living in a Prius?

    • @rachelm5478
      @rachelm5478 Год назад

      @@LeahandLevi Never said that you did say it was stupid. I do recall you listing a few cons, including saying that you chose the Prius because the carbon emissions from van life are quite high. While you might not have said that you'd never do it, if you list several cons about something then perhaps it's implied? Actually yes, acknowledging that you've said there are cons associated with van life in the past but you've decided those trade-offs are worth some extra comfort would be a great thing to say.

    If you were to do it for real, I would not do propane. I would continue the solar battery and have a convection hot plate. Also better options for washing your dishes, as wanting to be environmentally friendly, you should have done blueland , it's soap tablets you add to water. (I saw that plastic bottle of dish soap!) lol Also that van, the tires are horrible, too small and makes the whole thing bouncy. You have the hitch on the Prius so wouldn't a trailer /tent trailer be more efficient.

    Sounds like Cabana is breaking the law. You should chase a full refund. Installing a faucet connected to non-potable water in a rentable RV is asinine. Especially if done by a registered business.
    Texas Administrative Code Title 30 RULE §210.25
    “One of the following requirements must be met by the user or provider, for any area where reclaimed water is stored or where there exist hose bibs or faucets:
    (1) Signs having a minimum size of eight inches by eight inches, as shown in Figure 1, shall be posted at all storage areas and on all hose bibs and faucets reading, in both English and Spanish, "Reclaimed Water, Do Not Drink" or similar warning.
    (2) The area shall be secured to prevent access by the public.”
