I was there. The tanker escort mission was called Operation Earnest Will. When we would enter or leave the gulf through the Straits of Hormuz, Iran would light us up with their Silkworm missile radars. And steaming around in mined waters is rather nerve-racking. I was on the USS Merrill (DD-976), SAG B, during this engagement. We gave them a 15-minute warning in English, then farsi (we had a CT onboard who spoke farsi), then in English, then in Farsi, then he finished it with, "Have a nice day." Of course we all cheered at that. Afterwards, we gave them a 10-minute warning, a 5-minute warning, then we told them, "We are opening fire, is everyone off the platform?" They said, "We are not leaving." So, we opened fire. We fired 2 rounds before they fired back with a 22mm chain gun. Our Fire Controlman took care of that with one shot, as Nic said. Yes, he was THAT good. We were supposed to fire 5 or 10 rounds, then the Lynde B. McCormick was supposed to do the same. We were supposed to trade off until finished. We wound up doing all the shooting on the Sassan oil platform because Lynde B. McCormick's gun had dropped sync and was "walking" and they couldn't fix it in time. After the engagement we had a joke: How does the Ayatollah inspect his fleet... Glass Bottomed boat. The Soviet Udaloy destroyer was gathering intel. A few minor details wrong, but it doesn't detract from the story and NO ONE gets ALL the details right.. I love Nic's presentation. I've seen most of his videos and they are awesome.

Rony Ray Gun was the President's nickname and pushed the Star Wars (SDI)program. The program failed in its goals but things like laser guided missles, and antimissle systems were developed like those now protecting Israel.

USS Enterprise SHOULD "ring a bell" seeing how it is considered the "unofficial flag ship" of the ENTIRE US Navy, and has been around in one form or another from just after the American Revolution, and became the aircraft carrier during WW2 that won the most awards and is still to this day considered the "most decorated ship in the US Navy history". Taking part in multiple campaigns, multiple conflicts, and is possibly the ONLY "ship name" that will be carried over from one generation of naval ships to another first. Rules always favor the side that brakes the rules. Iran thought the advantage offered by acting first would be enough, it was not. USA comes in with enough firepower to overcome many disadvantages that come with facing an adversary that is willing to engage. As long as America can afford to follow the rules, America welcomes adversaries to take the first shot and justify a proportional response.
Hello my friend..,,please react to more of the Fat Electrician. Great way to hear US history. Gotta love it. The greatest one is Grand Theft U-boat where Americans steal a German submarine during WW2. Greatest video ever.
I loved your description of Iran "Pissing on their shoes" - because yes, from 1979 on, starting with the debacle of the hostage taking at the US Embassy in Tehran, Iran had been doing just that every chance that they got. Constant belligerent posturing and provocations - but never quite enough to provoke an official armed response. All of this happening with the background of the US and USSR navies pushing each other's limits during the "Cold War". So, the US Navy had been waiting for this for the best part of 10 years.
This guy is funny. His videos are a hoot!!!! My first trip to your channel... I am no expert but I agree with you their major gripe with each other is religion most of the time.. I had to Google it, the U.S. defense budget for 2024 is 825 billion. Thanks for the video!! Merci sir, take care!!!
If you can stand it, his video on the cheese bunkers (these are a real thing, and I did know about them decades ago from books; they're not a secret so much as something nobody happens to talk about) is good too and explains what I might assume is a mystery to non-U.S. citizens: why exactly there exists a weird chemical thing we call "American cheese product" and which those Americans who eat cheese have no problems counting as "cheese". It's the result of the government commissioning research on how to mess with the concept of cheese with the goal of extending its shelf life as much as possible without outright poisoning anybody, and the research not being any kind of secret so the companies that did it were free to find some use for their own work. They did.
The interesting thing is that the US took the wrong lesson from this into the 21st century, whereas Iran adapted. Unlike Japan or the Russians during the 20th century; Iran fully grasped now it cannot try to manipulate the rules of war nor compete with the US in open-sea battle. So they went faster smaller vessels that are harder for radars to track or deal with; and they went the Chinese route; land based re-entry weapons that are harder for CIWS to counteract. Thankfully, the US has not yet had cause to test itself against these new doctrines to see if they're effective.
Someone here hasn’t accounted for both the Patriot system & the AEGIS system on most USA military boats. If either of those systems find an enemy boat, write that boat into the casualties list because it’s not remaining on this Earth for very long.
Someone seems to be ignoring that the US and a whole bunch of coalition forces that include France and the UK have been fighting these tactics since last fall, and having to fight them as a reactionary force rather than proactive. The Houthis in Yemen are Iranian backed and advised. So far with minimal assests deployed during a US election season the Houthis are unable to acomplish their stated mission. People seem to forget that when you engage the US Armed forces you are not just fighting a navy ship, a base, or a soldier. A reminder had to be sent of that earlier this year when again Iranian backed forces killed three of our servicemen in Jordan. The military didn't use a carrier group, or launch from an overseas base. It sent a B-1B from Texas around the world in under a day to rain down hell.
This was not the first USS Enterprise, it is one of the oldest names in the US Navy and most reused, with the version from WW2 the most distinguished carrier the US has ever had. At the decommissioning of the nuclear carrier you mentioned it was announced that the next carrier laid down, CV-80, would be named USS Enterprise.
Correct. There is, has always been, and always will be a USS Enterprise. In fact, the first space shittle to ever roll out was Enterprise (and yes, it was introduced to the theme from Star Trek with some cast members present).
The overall operation was called Ernest Will. July 87 it started. Was there with the 7th fleet. The Silkworms were what worried us most. Those and the Exocet.

I've been trying to think of other "proportional" historical events. But the only thing that comes to mind in terms of variable scale, i think, might be the Old Rivalry between England and France before, during, and after the hundred years war. WW1 is probably a close competitor

Curator Terrence Bey: Proportional? My dear girl, when Ramses destroyed Syria, that was proportional, you are a catastrophe! Look at my library! Why do I put up with you?
Can we take a second to fully appreciate the mission name? 'Operation Praying Mantis' is pretty badass -- especially when you think about how fast and deadly a mantis is to its prey.
If you want to watch a good movie that talks about some of this not this particular incident but another incident where we had to deal with Iran because they kidnapped a bunch of American embassy workers in the '70s it's called Argo
Prime example of Proportional is...Japan hit Pearl Harbor. Distroyed lot of our equipment and personal. We hit Hashima and Nagasaki leveling both. Getting not only Japan's undivided attention, but that of the whole world.
that's misleading. the primary reason america developed atomic weapons is because we knew the nazis were also working on them and the idea of the nazis getting them first was reasonably considered unacceptable. the primary reason america used atomic weapons was because of japanese conduct at the battle of okinawa. the japanese military scared the entire civilian population out of their minds and forced them to cooperate in violent resistance to the americans, resulting in the death of half of that civilian population -- 100,000 people, many of them children -- as well as a large number of american casualties. facing the prospect of a repeat performance on the japanese mainland, american military planners figured that using atomic weapons to force a surrender was kinder to everyone.
@@ToonStory-fh4gn given the amount of times the U.S has tried to sleep someone comes over with a stick and pokes us. Why keep doing somthing like that and then expecting not to get leveled in response.

Check out his video about the Barbary pirates, the reason for the creation of the USA navy after defeating the English during the revolution. The young nation defeated a collection of pirates hosted by several countries, something the European countries didn’t.

How about don't bring a knife to a gun fight. As for the Russians saying we're just taking pitchers lol,I would if it talks like a duck floats like a duck,it's probably a stupid Russian duck lol.
Also, there was the 1979 Iran hostage situation when Iranians took the U.S. Embassy and over 100 American embassy workers hostage in Tehran. I was 10 years old and they paraded our people around on television everyday. I never forgot this and most of the U.S. service men involved in Operation Praying Mantis probably didn't either. So the response was "proportional" . 😆Also, when this happened in 1988, I was in U.S. Army basic training getting ready not only for the old Soviet Union but Iran as well.
@@ToonStory-fh4gn I never seen the movie, just my experience and I'm most likely the pilots during this mission was highly aware or the "Iranian Hostage Crisis as well".
@@ToonStory-fh4gn _argo_ mostly ignores the hostage crisis to focus on a handful of americans who avoided capture, but yes, that's the incident in question.
As an American I have to say. The French have a very proportional way of handling a warning when threatened by another country with nukes. Did you know that the French policy is to fire a warning shot with a nuke. I'm impressed. Wish we in USA would adopt that policy.🫡😉
That you know "Ice them!' more than Reagan... yeah. Besides the nomenclature "USS", Enterprise surely rings a bell in Paris over the last 500 years lol. The 🍿 take was funny. So was give it + take it lol.
Proportional for the navy that sunk everything Japan owned that would float in response to Pearl Harbor? The USN carrier launched dive bomber was the Grumman "Dauntless" SBD (aka, Slow But Deadly).

Hello my friend..,,please react to more of the Fat Electrician. Great way to hear US history. Gotta love it. The greatest one is Grand Theft U-boat where Americans steal a German submarine during WW2. Greatest video ever.
Hey, with pleasure that one sounds epic! Thank you 😀
I loved your description of Iran "Pissing on their shoes" - because yes, from 1979 on, starting with the debacle of the hostage taking at the US Embassy in Tehran,
Iran had been doing just that every chance that they got.
Thank you for this comment :) 825 billion, I'll pass this information to our gov to make sure they don't do anything stupid. Cheers!
They did.
Oh my god. Okay, I'm psyching myself up for this.
Let's hope they don't have to do the test IRL, the world's messy enough as it is!
Someone here hasn’t accounted for both the Patriot system & the AEGIS system on most USA military boats.
If either of those systems find an enemy boat, write that boat into the casualties list because it’s not remaining on this Earth for very long.
@@Delpix722 plus didnt the US just test a new missile on iranian rockets in the past few days? I wonder what they're capable of
@@kevinprzy4539 USA has been capable of that since 1990s. Shot down one of our own spy satellites to prove a point.
And last but not least: the Star Trek one!
If I remember correctly a USS Enterprise was also involved in the dismantling of the Barbary pirate states as well.
The overall operation was called Ernest Will. July 87 it started. Was there with the 7th fleet. The Silkworms were what worried us most. Those and the Exocet.
Just about any of his videos is pure gold, but that one remains my favorite 🙂 do react to more of his please
With pleasure 😃
I love this story so much I watch every reaction video I can find.
I recommend The Fat Electrician's USS O'Bannon video, you'll never look at potatoes the same way.
Sorry for the late answer, and thanks, indeed it is on my "to-review" list!
I think this was a great reaction! The Fat Electrician has so many great and informative videos that you will not get bored! Even at times you did not speak, I saw the smiles that proved to me you understand English very well...Congrats on that my friend! Take care and God Bless you and yours!
Thank you pal, I wish you all the best from Lyon, France :)
Well now I want to rewatch matrix xD
😅
I'd definitely recommend checking out more of the Fat Electrician's videos.
Thanks I already have a couple others on the way
If you ever react to any more of his videos, that one wasn't done yet. He always does something in the last few seconds after the credits.
Yes, thank you I realised that afterwards. I will be even more cautious now to keep everything in my forthcoming videos!
I've been trying to think of other "proportional" historical events. But the only thing that comes to mind in terms of variable scale, i think, might be the Old Rivalry between England and France before, during, and after the hundred years war.
WW1 is probably a close competitor
Ah I found it : the 2nd opium war where the French army rampaged the Imperial Qing Palace because they did not want westerners to send drugs in their country
Bit of a correction 21:20 Those were SBD Dauntless Dive Bombers, the F4F Wildcats were our Fighter Air craft
Thank you for taking the time to explain it!
It wasnt until id seen it many times that i realised "anyone else wanna find out what its like to chew 5 gum?"
Was a funny refrence yo the chewing gum ADs eichbit was... But it was also a double cause the gun they shot him with was a 5 inch gun
great video The Fat Electrician is an awesome youtuber hope you check out more of his videos, also keep watching to the very end he usually has some parting words before the video completely ends.
Thanks for the tip, I'll make sure to watch it till the end next time :)
Don't touch the boats!
I swear I won't
Rhis is what happens when you don't surrender at the first sign of violence
haya. it's usually good manners when you react to another youtuber to link the original material in the info section of your video. just a heads up. good luck with yer channel : )
Oh crap, you're right, it was an oversight on my part in this video. Thank you very much for the reminder, it's been corrected 👍
@@ToonStory-fh4gn i kinda thought but din know if was that or you are kinda new to reactions. i know He usually supports folks reacting to his stuff, so I figured i would mention as there is good chance he might poke in and say hello. and if you are like me i'd be mortified i forgot lol. you fixed that within 5 hours of me posting so good on ya. wish more folks were that nice. happy reacting!
There have been several different vessels named Enterprise in the US Navy. The carrier from WW2 and the one in this story are not the same. Just FYI.
Thank you very much for taking the time to explain it to me 🫡
Great stuff...all of Fat Electrician's stuff is really informative and fun...and his accuracy is very very high. The only note I have on this is a tiny correction of something you said. At Midway, the heroic dive bombers were Douglas SBD Dauntlesses...the F4F Wildcats were most of the fighter force. 👍😁
Thank you as always for taking the time to give me these explanations I appreciate it :)
As an American from a military background, I understand that France gave us the Statue of Liberty, and we still fight for it. New sub from NC
And me owe so much to the brave american soldiers during WW1 & WW2. All my friendship from France :)
So, I want to say this before I embarrass myself on the internet, been studying the french language for a couple years and I'm still studying it, and I suck at it, but I still want to say this;
Merci, vos vidéos m'ont aidé à traverser des moments difficiles de ma vie !
Merci du fond du cœur, ça me touche énormément. J'espère que vous allez bien, courage pour les épreuves à surmonter. Votre français est parfait 👍

FYI. Those planes at Midway were Douglas, Dauntless/SBD (Scout Bomber, Douglas).
Thanks for the clarification 👍
Curator Terrence Bey: Proportional? My dear girl, when Ramses destroyed Syria, that was proportional, you are a catastrophe! Look at my library! Why do I put up with you?
Can we take a second to fully appreciate the mission name?
'Operation Praying Mantis' is pretty badass -- especially when you think about how fast and deadly a mantis is to its prey.
Damned you're 1000% right!
USS Enterprise was also in the movie Top Gun (1986) if I’m not mistaken.
Fun Fact During ww2 The Vichy Battleship Jean Bart got into a gunbattle with the U.S Battleship U.s.s Massachusetts During the Invasion of Morroco
Thank you, I did not know about this battle!
If you want to watch a good movie that talks about some of this not this particular incident but another incident where we had to deal with Iran because they kidnapped a bunch of American embassy workers in the '70s it's called Argo
Argo is awesome, thanks! I might rewatch it some day
Its 100% victories.... Ok as a American I have to introduce you to a concept called Seal Clubbing.
Another version: if you can’t take it, don’t dish it out!
hahaha nice one!
Would love your reaction to TFE's video of Virginia Hall aka the Limping Lady that he did.
With pleasure!
@@ToonStory-fh4gn Thanks! Looking forward to it! ❤️🤍💙🇺🇸
Prime example of Proportional is...Japan hit Pearl Harbor. Distroyed lot of our equipment and personal. We hit Hashima and Nagasaki leveling both. Getting not only Japan's undivided attention, but that of the whole world.
Oh yes, right on the spot. And then staring at the rest of the country and asking "got the message?" 😅 thank you
that's misleading. the primary reason america developed atomic weapons is because we knew the nazis were also working on them and the idea of the nazis getting them first was reasonably considered unacceptable. the primary reason america used atomic weapons was because of japanese conduct at the battle of okinawa. the japanese military scared the entire civilian population out of their minds and forced them to cooperate in violent resistance to the americans, resulting in the death of half of that civilian population -- 100,000 people, many of them children -- as well as a large number of american casualties. facing the prospect of a repeat performance on the japanese mainland, american military planners figured that using atomic weapons to force a surrender was kinder to everyone.
Honestly, America's reaction to *anyone* messing with our boats *ever* probably counts.
@@ToonStory-fh4gn given the amount of times the U.S has tried to sleep someone comes over with a stick and pokes us. Why keep doing somthing like that and then expecting not to get leveled in response.
@@keithpierce5686Exactly! How has the world not learned to leave us alone. We are a reactive force. Leave us alone, and everyone gets to live.
Outside of America, historically you have people like joan of Arc and napoleon who had to consistently teach people lessons when no one wanted them top. The black prince if he didn't die was probably going to end the 100 years war
I was waiting for "I fart in your general direction"
😆
Yeah Iran played an explosive game of FAFO and they still got off so easy hahahaha
It could have been a lot worse indeed, as Nick said the Navy remained "proportionnal" 😂
@@ToonStory-fh4gn Hey as long as it fits in "proportions" we're good! Gotta love their thought processes hahaha!
@@UndeadJohnGaming haha nobody said what the "proportions" should be so we're good to go here

One of the fat electrician videos i highly recommend is the one on the Berlin Airlift
Thanks for the recommendation!
Check out his video about the Barbary pirates, the reason for the creation of the USA navy after defeating the English during the revolution. The young nation defeated a collection of pirates hosted by several countries, something the European countries didn’t.

The story of the Samuel B Roberts is an excellent story all by itself. (Both the one in this story, and the first USS Samuel B Roberts)
Thank you I will try to find videos about him!
@@ToonStory-fh4gn While the man Samuel B Roberts won the Medal of Honor, the first ship that was named after him has a powerful story, as does the 3rd vessel named for him - the one in this story.
Proportional = Gulf of Tonkin incident = Vietnam War.

Wow fantastic video my friend that's a funny man.
I hear you about swearing,I'm pretty sure the Scottish people invented swearing or just added it to our language.
How about don't bring a knife to a gun fight.
As for the Russians saying we're just taking pitchers lol,I would if it talks like a duck floats like a duck,it's probably a stupid Russian duck lol.
The thing is, every word spoken with a Scottish accent sounds like swearing! Thank you my friend :)
Thanks,a lot of people think the Scott's are mentally ill,no more than anybody else I say lol.
This isn't the subject of the film "Argo" by any chance? Don't hesitate to tell me if I'm wrong, thanks!
@@ToonStory-fh4gn I never seen the movie, just my experience and I'm most likely the pilots during this mission was highly aware or the "Iranian Hostage Crisis as well".
@@ToonStory-fh4gn
_argo_ mostly ignores the hostage crisis to focus on a handful of americans who avoided capture, but yes, that's the incident in question.
VERY simply, Sunni is book oriented, Shia is person oriented.
As an American I have to say. The French have a very proportional way of handling a warning when threatened by another country with nukes. Did you know that the French policy is to fire a warning shot with a nuke. I'm impressed. Wish we in USA would adopt that policy.🫡😉
Hahaha thank you for this mate, I salute you from France!
