    Hmmmm interesting review. I've been looking hard at this one lately because of that great price. I was a fan of the 15 and the 19 oloroso finish - I do like that clean highland profile overall, and bottled at 46, ncf, natural color. I think I'll pull the trigger and expect something pretty good but not to be blown away. Maybe I'll love it even more than you guys.

      My level of enthusiasm is lower than most of the whisky tube on this one so hopefully you’ll be impressed. Dustin and I just recorded a 20 year PX cask strength Glencadam that was a bit more interesting.

      @@sundayeveningscotch4978 no offical bottling. We have 2 more OB single casks at CS to get to. The PX was a pretty light PX cask, must have been very reused, but it added a bit more and the added abv helped. Still not a stunner a bit bit less of a value. I think our port and oloroso single casks reviews on some younger bottling might get interesting. As for the 21, if you can get it at UK prices with fair shipping you can't be upset with this one if you know what you're getting. It just might not wow you or make you think "oh yeah this IS 21 years old". But I've seen it about 140-150 to your door, hard to be upset.

      I might have killed my arran 21 lol. That's a much MUCH better whisky. I did do them side by side. The higher quality sherry casks in the Arran really come alive vs this glencadem. You almost instantly realize just how much better Arran is when you go side by side. Everything from the malt quality to the casks are vastly superior.

    There's something slightly comical about a channel called Top Shelf Whisky and the host says "I don't have a subtle palette, I need something to wow me". Stick to Ardbeg 10 and the entry level sherry bombs then. If you are going to appreciate true top shelf whisky then elegance and subtly of flavour and some of the biggest factors. Rosebank- doesn't wow you, its the elegance and nuisance of the whisky. How many well aged ex-bourbon whiskies are there that don't have massive flavour hooks? Marking something down because it doesn't wow you with big obvious flavours is defining some whiskies by the rules of a game they aren't trying to play. Whisky should be judged by the execution of what they are setting out to achieve.

    • @topshelfdustin3060
      @topshelfdustin3060 2 года назад

      First off, thank you for watch and thank you even more for the feedback. I think some context might be in order on this one though I see you've been following the channel for some time. I'll start with Top Shelf is simply a reference to our reviewing expensive, older, and higher end bottles. We're by no means claiming we're the best reviewers out there!
      You made me go back and re-watch. Mike's score is a bit low so agree with you there. But I have to say, there isn't much nuance in this whisky. There isn't much elegance either. It's simple, straight forward, and dull. it drinks younger than the age statement. It doesn't have distinct transitions, the approach and the finish are very much about the same. While I certainly love my whisky at CS, I don't think CS would fix any of these issues here. It's just not special imo.
      Also, wow factor in CS entry level sherry bombs? Those are generally terrible whiskies, look at that KK8 (either of them). I can't believe people like those. Now nothing wrong with ardbeg 10, but to be fair I'm not sure Ardbeg has had a wow whisky since dark cove. way too many overly young and frankly poorly executed bottles.
      Anyway cheers Stephen and hopefully you watch more of our videos and give us more good or bad feedback. We can't get better without hearing both! I think the take away I got here is I need to be more critical and not let my desire to think a poor whisky is good cloud my review. I clearly talked this one up when I shouldn't have.

    • @Stephend005
      @Stephend005 2 года назад

      @@topshelfdustin3060 Thanks for your reply. First off, I think you may have misinterpreted my comment about wow factor in sherry bombs. I don't rate them, nor whiskies that have peat and nothing else BUT if a comment is made in the video stating "I don't have subtlety in my palette, I need big flavours to wow me" then perhaps it's best sticking to simpler whiskies with those big hooks rather than marking down subtle whiskies for being exactly that. It wasn't me saying I like sherry bombs.
      We all have different palettes and perhaps you got a duff bottle which happens. I agree with the other reviewers that it's a great whisky, but I don't mind if we disagree or there's some bad bottles out there.
      It's just a bit of a trigger point when people can't appreciate delicate of subtle whiskies, declare it doesn't have big flavours and then mark it down as a result. I saw this once on scotch 4 dummies with a different whisky too where a comment was made that ex-bourbon matured scotch was too simple- nonsense. I feel that's missing the point of a big portion of great whiskies out there and you guys generally review the good stuff that requires a closer examination than that. However, if that whisky just didn't work for you then fair enough.
      Anyway, cheers for all the content and apologies if I was a bit rough with the initial comment :)

    • @topshelfdustin3060
      @topshelfdustin3060 2 года назад

      @@Stephend005 cheers man. Yeah "wow' doesn't imo mean BIG. Now, we like CS which is imo different from just big flavors, take that KK8 sherry bomb, I down right can't drink it. It's not a wow whisky!
      Anyway, I do think ultimately we both don't care for this distillery's malt and combining that with extremely inactive casks really made this a disappointing experience. I should have watched ralfy's review where he basically told me I'd hate it and then gave it a 90 :)

    • @Stephend005
      @Stephend005 2 года назад

      @@topshelfdustin3060 I'm not sure which Ralfy review you were watching (perhaps the older one from 3 years ago rather than the much more recent one?) but ralfy didn't say a bad word about it. Quite the opposite in fact:
      “a blossoming single walk that generously rewards patience fantastically with intensity of flavour”
      “complex, light, hugely expressive single malt, which is very good quality indeed”
      “light, floral, fragrant, fruity, sweet, sour, salty, bitter, nice expressive sensation range”
      “a dram i have been thoroughly enjoying exploring”
      “delivers a resounding, excellent single malt, 90 out of 100, not a problem”
