How do you allocate your requests for a Service Academy Nomination?

One of the most important parts of getting into a service academy is obtaining a Nomination from a US Senator or Member of Congress. If you are interested in more than one academy how do you allocate your requests?
Applying to one of the five (5) Federal Service Academies (West Point, Annapolis, US Air Force Academy, US Coast Guard Academy, or US Merchant Marine Academy) is a daunting endeavor that most people only do once in their life if at all.
