Shaye is an amazingly talented musician, surrounded by a perfect blend of talent. She is a great leader who humbly guides this magnificent group.Lotsa love from Australia.
4 years ago when my wife of 53 years died of breast cancer I was living alone and came across tuba skinny on utube. What a joy came into my life followed by many happy hours watching and listening to their music. Thank you Shay and the band....you have filled a void in my life. David McCabe Dublin ireland T
Trads been around for years Acker Bilks Paramount Jazz Band were top of the tree at it in 1958-59 give him Humph Littleton etc a listen from them times and you'll hear they were keeping the flag flying for New Orleans
Since the 70s, I listened to Preservation Hall for authentic NOLA Jazz. When Tuba Skinny came about, I was blown away; so gifted, professional, so joyfully inspiring. Tuba Skinny is already historically important for what they're doing to continue this music tradition and ensure that it's alive and well for future generations.
I love what Tuba Skinny does. They treat traditional New Orleans style jazz without parody but with the respect it deserves. I think Shaye, in addition to being a very talented musician, must also be a fine human being.
Always enjoy listening to her and Tuba Skinny. Great arrangements and exceptional talent ! I just wish that the times I visited NOLA, I would have bumped into them !
One of the most delightful treasures I've enjoyed via this internet, an absolute joy to listen to and also admire ! Kudos to her virtuosity and historical musicology ! Thank you also Pops ! :)
Lol. Enjoyed that very much, Pops. I'm sure it must have been fun making it. Thanks. Have never met nor seen Shaye in person but I get the impression that not only is she a fine musician, but also seems to have a pleasant personality. Thanks again for the video. It was fun and interesting.
I am a fan of Shaye's enjoying every aspect of her life, music, band, and individuality as only Shaye can be. She is a one of a kind "GREAT". Listening in Mechanicsville, VA
Great interview and Pops Coffee has made a very good description of Shaye's role in Tuba Skinny. She is an excellent band leader as well as a very talented musician.
Thank You Shaye for the great great music 🎵 that you and the Tuba Skinny have put together! Forever endeded to the bands aceivments and your accomplishments and guidance! With so much Love A Fan!! Happy Thanksgiving to all of the Tuba Skinny Folks! Respect!
So wonderful to have an in depth portrait of Shaye. Every word of praise is true. It must be said that everything has already been spoken at various times by various people at the wonder that is Shaye Cohn. It is however a joy to me to have all her many talents so sensibly discussed at one time.
She's an american treasure. Great bandleader. She still plays piano and violin....she plays violin on Erika's country projects as well. She's a real wealth of Americana and musicology. I think she's a brilliant Coronetist. She plays great music and is connected to a band like a conductor would be.
Excellent narrative, thank you. I’ve read your book too, which I thought was fascinating, very informative and enjoyable. I only stumbled across Tuba Skinny earlier this year. Such an awesome and outstanding group of musicians. Shaye is such a star; a force to be reckoned with. Just wish I’d found them during lockdown; it would have made life so much more fun!
Thanks, Karen. I'm glad you've discovered them. I did so when a friend recommended one of their videos to me about nine years ago. It had the same effect on me that you are feeling.
Thanks to Shaye the whole band and each in the them are able to improvise to gether or as a soloist. Also the bas horn has now joined the improvisers. Bravo Bravo.
I loved this concept. Two Pops for the price of one! I certainly agree with everything you said about Shaye . Her skills as both musician and composer are incredible. A true master of her arts...........................
Specially gratifying to have your support, brenda mello. I'm intending a similar but separate video dealing with Shaye's skills as a composer - probably for December 2.
a gifted, musician who skillfully leads others similarly gifted tho uniquely individual resulting in a musical whole that is greater than the sum of the parts. I LOVE TUBA SKINNY.✡
Thank you very much for this fantastic video with its explanations about Shaye, her family and Tuba Skinny 👍 Now I have a little idea about the person "Pops" behind hundreds of excellent comments 😍
Pops Wow! This was great insight, on this fascinating lady, it’s amazing how talented Shaye Cohen really is, from classical 🎹🎹 to 🎻 and the 🎺….(coronet) Music runs in the family, and I’ve noted a comment about Al Cohen, her Grandad who was a great 🎷player! Pops, the bit about remembering hundreds of tunes, and getting the arrangements spot on, is something you take for granted. As I’ve no knowledge of either playing instruments or reading music, your rundown of what their doing is although baffling 🤔too me, I enjoy the way you break things up, personally I enjoy listening away, and if you get a 🐝( buzz) out of whose performing, no matter the genre of music, that’s half the battle! Pops, Thank you for posting this on, and it must have been a 🐝( buzz ) for you, getting interviewed, by your twin brother😂 PS I’ll be looking out for Shaye, giving out her orders, in her own 🍬 way! Cheers Pops👍 That song was Brilliant one!
Thanks for your terrific response, Stan. There will be a similar video about Shaye as a composer in a fortnight's time. I hope you will watch that, too.
Thank you for an enjoyable and informative video. I especially like the fact you don’t have some irritating background music taking away from the dialogue/monologue
My instinctual impressions (as a musician myself) is that Shaye is somewhat shy and introverted; the perfect genius musician that tunes out all the background noise of the audience and is so obsessed with her perfoming that no matter what is going on around her it is all about the enjoyment of doing the best she can. In my opinion the other band members are also great musicians but one cannot help but focus on Shaye as the primary master of the scenario. The band does not seek fame and fortune or paint their hair all sorts of colors with wild outits to mask the fact that those other performers are lacking in musicianship and need to compensate. She doesn't have to show off with super high pitched notes or double/triple tounging (Flight of the Bumblebee by Harry James for example). They are unpretentious and such everyday normal folks that if you pass them on the streets you will miss the fact that you are in the presence of greatness.
Thanks. You are so right in all details. On my visits to New Orleans several years ago, incidentally, it really did pain me that so many people in the streets passed by them, unaware, as you say, that they were 'in the presence of greatness'.
Bravo!

Hi Pops, do you know of any transcriptions of Shaye Cohn's playing from any of their albums? I haven't found any yet. So I'm learning by ear which I know is beneficial in the long run but I want to speed things up as it's a time consuming process. I'm a returning player and there's lots of Miles & Chet transcriptions available (which is great) but not so many from the New Orleans Trad genre that I've seen.
Alas, no, Chris. Like you, I try things by ear and set them down on manuscript paper - an extremely slow process - but I am not very good at it. A few years ago, there was someone in Slovenia who attempted a couple of tunes but I have heard nothing of him since. Peter Petrovič was his name.
Shaye is an amazingly talented musician, surrounded by a perfect blend of talent. She is a great leader who humbly guides this magnificent group.Lotsa love from Australia.
Shaye is the absolute best! And she makes Tuba Skinny the absolute best. We are so lucky to have her and them.

I hope Tuba Skinny will continue on and on. They have a wonderful formula, which is well described here. They are the best thing going nowadays.
I found Tuba Skinny quite by accident. Now I watch them every chance I get.
Shay Cohn is a rare gem in jazz music. I hope to see them raise a statue of her in NOLA.
And of course Cheers to the whole band!

Shaye Cohn is absolutely truly remarkable and brilliant in her multi- talents and her directing. I love her concise yet subtle gestures.
