    Because John Lasseter likes cars, and he had a really enriching experience going on vacation with his family along route 66 and other backroads of America. That's why this movie was made. Because this was something a really good storyteller was passionate about, something he wanted to share with others :)
    In my opinion, the soul of this movie is what makes it stand out.

      This is what Pixar was afraid of before bringing Brad Bird into the studio, that they were going to be too confident that their next films would be hits anyway. That's the problem with this movie, John just liked Cars, his studio made hit after hit and he thought that making a movie about Cars was immediately a good idea. Whatever you think about this movie, there is no denying that it didn't pay off as well as the other films

    The idea for Cars came from John Lasseter himself. He was on a road trip taking all these sites and landscapes and thats when the idea for Cars hit him. The message is to really take a moment to slow down and enjoy the landscapes. I have been on road trips and I can tell you that being in small towns and even ghost towns just really speaks to you in a way.

    It's weird when the reason someone doesn't like a movie seems almost entirely meta. Does he have anything bad to say about the movie itself? Not really.
    Instead, he complains about it on a meta level. It's a story that's been done before. The company that made it already released a CG movie with humans in it, so he doesn't like that they went back to non-living things. Not everyone likes cars (the vehicle, not the movie). Etc.
    It sounds a lot like hype-backlash. He built up some sort of expectation in his mind (human characters) and when Pixar didn't deliver, he just hated the product without giving it a chance.
    I don't see any reason why an animation company should do *only* movies with people in them, just because they have the technology. Sometimes, the world they want to create is just "What if everyone was replaced by cars?" If that's where their imagination took them, then so be it. Why was it made? Because that's what a producer liked.
    Personally, I like Cars (the movie). I know next to nothing about cars (the vehicle) except the very basics from how to drive them. I don't care about racing. Sure, I've seen the "jerkwad hero learning that winning isn't everything" story quite a lot. But the movie was enjoyable despite that.
    It's like how a lot of Americans hate the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode Take Me Out To The Holosuite, while Europeans don't see the fuss. The episode is nothing but baseball movie cliches. It was made because the producer liked baseball. Americans hate it for meta reasons: They've seen baseball cliches done to death. Europeans don't care and see the episode as harmless fluff, a breather in the war story arc.

      1. Why are you reading so far into this when what he does won't affect you in the slightest.
      2. So what if it is an animation company that doesn't mean everyone is gonna wanna see inanimate objects come to like or animals being personalized.
      3. It's great that you found something to like about it but that doesn't mean he has to
      4. Why bring up something that has nothing to do with what we are talking about
      5. Why should he give a damn what you think of his opinion
      And 6. Why do you even care so much about why he dislikes it

      Um dude why do you care so much about why I was asking so many questions? Those are legit good questions. Opinions are opinions not facts. This person was practically going out of their way to say why Doug was wrong for disliking this movie. I don’t understand why people get so upset over things like this as it doesn’t in any way affect them at all. It’s just someone’s personal preference.

    • @grizzly_manbanimation8436
      @grizzly_manbanimation8436 4 года назад +2

      Um I’m sorry WTF was all that. All I was saying is why should someone change their opinion on something just because someone else disagrees with them. I didn’t need a full blown lecture of the art world. All that did was give me a massive headache it confused me so much. Also all this talk of subjective and objective, what the hell does any of that even mean in the art world? Why did my calling this person out on them going into way to much detail on why Doug was wrong for his reasons of disliking this movie warrant an unnecessary full blown lecture on the world or art. I wasn’t even talking about the world of art, I was asking why this person cared so much about Doug hating this movie. I should also be asking you why you seem to care so much about it that you felt you had to lecture me about the world of art. My gosh one thing to remember when doing anything in this world is that try as you might, you can’t please everyone so you shouldn’t try to.

      Ok maybe maybe I didn’t make myself clear so my apologies for that. I’m glad you are very passionate about this subject. I’m not discouraging that at all. I’m sorry if it seemed like I was. It just that it sounded like the main commentor (sorry if I spelled that wrong.) was telling Doug his opinion was wrong. To me, telling someone that their opinion is wrong is a big offense because it’s Like telling people they can’t think for themselves. If opinions didn’t exist, then we wouldn’t be individuals. This is a subject I’m very passionate about because individuality is what makes all of us special, it makes us unique. Telling someone their opinion is wrong simply because you say it is sounds like a very controlling statement. You can however tell someone that they got their facts wrong about something and that might change their opinion. If what you were doing is the latter and not the former, then my apologies.

      humans are involved in a lot of pixar movies though. only Cars/Cars 2, Monsters U, and Bug's Life dont have them. and in everything else they play a big part. Humans cause the trash build up in Wall-e, Andy looses Buzz and Woody and they need to escape from Sid, Al kidnaps Woody, human kids provide scream in Monsters Inc, in Toy Story 3 Andy going off to college sets everything into motion, in Inside Out you are litterally inside a human brain, Ratatouille is kinda obvious along with Up and Brave.

    • @CaptTeK2
      @CaptTeK2 8 лет назад +3

      +Brandon Thompson I think the point is more human MAIN characters, not background or secondary. Ratatouille is more about the rat, Wall-e is of course focused on Wall-e, Toy story couldn't give less of a crap about the humans, and Monsters Inc focuses more on the monsters. So out of all the movies you listed, only Inside Out, Up, and Brave focus on humans. And even then, Inside Out focuses on the emotions struggle than the people they inhabit.

    I really liked the animation here, how they made cars emote without making them too humanoid. Especially if they're driving while doing it, it looks just... right for car-people-things. Otherwise it's pretty cliche, but I appreciate the effort put into making car-people emote and behave just like you'd imagine car-people would(though I'm not sure you'd routinely imagine how living car-beings would emote).

    Cars was a decently solid film.
    The story may have been done to death but to be fair it did match the tone they were going for.
    I thought the film looked rather nice and unique with a handful of very postcard-like images.
    Doug neglected to mention the calming and bright soundtrack along with a couple of really nice quiet moments.
    The film has a strange concept and one or two plot holes, but I personally think that the pacing, presentation, and pixar charm pull it through to be placed on top of bug's life and brave, but quite a few marks under up, toy story 2 and the incredibles.
    LOVE your work Doug, but... i gotta disagree with you on this one.
    Plus a film about cars shouldn't be that strange given that we all adore mutant turtles that are ninja's.

      As someone who repeatedly watched that movie as a kid, I now think it's just awful. The story is so recycled, the characters are boring (even Robin Williams's character, sadly), and there was a serious lack of good jokes. There were a few funny lines, like out of Robin Williams, but it's mostly forgettable if you only see it once.

    Something I’ll give credit to is that the ending of the movie doesn’t go full 100% cliche, it’s not like they have Lightning McQueen decide to walk away from his racing career in favor of living a smaller, simpler life in Radiator Springs or anything like that, it’s more like they end on sort of a middle ground, he makes Radiator Springs popular again and still goes there but he doesn’t give up his racing career either, he still continues on with it and even makes Mater and the other characters his pit crew, for all the stories about the big hotshot celebrity getting dragged into the slums this one at least doesn’t follow *ALL* the cliches

    I will agree that this movie isn't the best Pixar movie but I do actually really like this movie. I thought it was funny, had great characters, some wonderful moments where it just slows down and lets you take in the scene. Like with the cruise scene or the drive scene. I don't care if the stories been done over and over and I hate that kind of argument against any movie because to me it's not important if the stories original, it's how they tell the story and the characters they use to tell it. And to me Cars does it very well. I can't think of a single main or secondary character that I didn't like in this film. I've scene this movie a dozen times and I'll continue to see it a dozen times more.

      Jonathan Tefft Agreed, I don't like Cars 2 or Brave, (haven't seen TGD) but this one was good and I actually think this is Pixar in their roots (Toy Story and A Bugs life, both and Cars directed by John Lasseter). Simple concepts done great and charming, also Randy Newman.
      I like the characters but I don't love them, I kinda find Mater annoying ala Jar Jar Binks, but it had his moments

    Cars is a film aimed at young boys, which is where it made its biggest impact. I used to work retail, and the cars shoes were amongst the biggest sellers in my department, but they were almost exclusively found in the toddler boys department, which shows you what demographic Pixar was aiming at. Someday soon, my nephew will be obsessed with this film franchise. He LOVES vehicles and having a whole film starring them will be of huge appeal (right now my sister and her husband don't allow him to watch full length films because of his age). He already loves Cars Land in Disneyland.
    I will admit, though, it is harder to make a kids film aimed at boys than it is to make a kids film aimed at girls for some reason. Pixar does it better than Disney, but I think that is because they /usually/ don't necessarily market to a particular gender. They, like Ghibli, make family films. Cars, though, is very definitely aimed at boys.

      I like all these movies myself, even if the story has been done before, I just love how they put those scenarios in this world! The movie is about Dusty having to become a firefighter to keep his town from being removed due to unacceptable fire safety precautions. Even MORE stressful is the fact that Dusty has a condition in his engine that keeps him from going super fast, where he may never race again. (just after becoming a racer too!) The movie struck a cord for me on Dusty's condition, because it feels SO true to how real it is to an athelete. There are times when an athlete has to stop doing the sport they love to play in, mostly because their body can't take anymore strain. Even more heartbreaking when all the training leading to that big game ends in a fracture, or having to bench because of muscle spasms. I still don't get how people hate these movies, but I respect their decisions. But like you, I love all of the Cars & Planes movies!

Because, you know, the character designs for the cars in this movie look a lot like the style used for the character designs from that short. Oh Doug, if only you'd seen the extras on your DVD of this movie if you have it; you would have known the reason why this movie was made. It was made because the director loved the trips he took with his family when he was a kid along the Route 66. This movie is as much about that as every lesson that was put into the movie, like respecting your elders, and not looking down on people just because they talk and look funny.
    One of the reasons I love this movie is because I actually wanted to see this concept in the movie for many years. I'm not a car guy, but every time I see a car I think it has a face because the front of the car looks that way.
    And what is this about Cars doesn't look that great? I think it looks great. The way cars jump sometimes, and just the overall animation is amazing, and colors really pop out as they would on race cars and show cars, and even the rusty cars. And the whole world of Cars looks great too.
    And you're forgetting that animated movies are made for kids, even though Pixar makes them for adults as much as for kids. I can understand why you didn't like the movie though, but all the reasons you don't like it for are the reasons for loving it.

    The thing is that it's a race film, with all that imply : the bad behaviour of a famous racer who is in fact a douche and become a good man that understand that we're all the same ; where we live and what we do don't matter. So it's classic but attractive and, when I was kid, I laughed a lot, I cried and I a really got attached to the characters who were all really simple... and that's you need as a kid : simple stuff which create strong story. And about the adults ? I find that's it's a really acidic critic of the star system, which portrayed every kind of guys who live in this system (the humble champion, the big famous douche...) easily to make kids understand who they are and make adults feeling bad or good about their choice : all that's portraits depicted in the films are realistic and represent kind of people that really exist. So before I lose myself in saying huge shit in English (I'm French..and I LOVE THIS FUCKING MOVIE) let's just say that it's entertaining for kids, and that make adults thinking a second time about their idols

    A movie about sentient cars isnt really a weirder concept than one about sentient bugs or toys, right?
    I don't get that complaint, but everything else I agree.

      Add anything to _what_? A movie has to stand on its own. It added a new story with a new concept. You can't ask for more to be "added".
      That's a pretty weak argument. Just because Critic wants to see more humans in these movies doesn't mean that's the majority's interest.
      Just so it's clear, I still think this movie was pretty boring, but not because of these points.

      By new I obviously meant it was something different from what they did before. I didn't say it was a good story or the ideas were never done before.
      The animation quality is not connected to the concept whatsoever.

      A movie about a world filled with sentient cars. In Toy Story and a Bug's Life, the world is filled with humans, though the bugs and toys are the center of attention. Cars is just... weird.

    This movie is a love letter for NASCAR fans. A lot of references to cars, drivers, and historical moments in its history with moments all throughout that really pay homage. If you're not into NASCAR or racing in general, this probably won't be your movie. It's not an all-rounder like a lot of Pixar's most highly-recieved films.
    I'm a racing fan, so you know where I put this. I know Pixar's done a lot better, but this is still my 3rd favorite movie ever made simply because how enjoyable it is, how likeable the characters are for me, and how it truly respecrs me as a racing fan. This is the movie I've watched the most and it's aged very well with time even as I've grown up.

    This is actually my favorite of all time. But I do see where Doug is coming from. After movies like Finding Nemo and The Incredibles, I'm guessing a lot of people were expecting something a lot more than just talking cars.

    I think you may have been a little hard on this one. You went into it, saying you don't like cars and know nothing about them. Bad precedence. You didn't crack one smile? Really? It's not that bad of a movie. And I honestly don't think you have to have a passion for cars to enjoy this movie. Yes the concept is simple and been done 100 times, but they it's always a good lesson for kids and there are always kids in that age group that need a movie like this. I can understand where you're coming from but I think because you had a certain mindset going in, you may have nit picked a tad.
    Still enjoy your videos regardless, I don't mind disagreeing once in a while lol

    he basically don’t like cars cuz he thinks its weird that it’s about cars
    but endgame is about a fat god, talking racoon, a green human, a blue robot, 2 irom man, and a guy with a bow and arrow traveling back in fucking time to find 6 colorful stones to defeat a big purple alien who literally snapped away half of the universe and everybody loves that..... okay

    I'm not a fan of this movie, but I find the complaint that the characters aren't "human" to be misguided. You can tell a completely "human" story without using humans. You can also tell really cliche stories using humans, cars or whatever. That said, the conceit of the movie sat well with me. When I was a kid I had a lot more toy cars than action figures, so during a lot of my play, I made stories based on the cars as heroes and villains. I can only imagine that one of the creators of Cars did something similar as a kid.

    John Lasseter made the movie in honor of his father, a man who loved cars, who passed away a few years before. That why they made this movie.

    Why is Doug asking "why" was this movie made? Is he just being deliberately dense, or just too naive? Didn't the words *CORPORATE SELL OUT* ever cross his mind?

    • @luxtenax9175
      @luxtenax9175 8 лет назад +2

      How much one needs to "fixate" on that question before the (all too obvious) answer comes to mind? Half a second?
      Matter of fact, that must be the length of time it too to "develop" this movie's "concept": "Kids like cars. Cars sell toys. *Greenlight immediately*."

    • @luxtenax9175
      @luxtenax9175 8 лет назад

      Fernie Canto Well, to be fair, even the early pixar movies were also made to sell toys, is just that they cared about the story and characters first, that's why the merchandise that came out of those movies always gets a pass.
      This one wasn't so subtle about it.

  • @HugoSoup57

    I have to disagree with Doug here. Cars 1 might not be a great movie, it’s definitely one of Pixar’s weaker films. However, I don’t believe it’s nearly as bad as he think it is. The story is a bit generic and predictable, but it’s fairly well-executed and the movie at least understood the story it wanted to tell. Cars 2, on the other hand, was an absolute trainwreck of a sequel that actually deserves the hate and backlash that it gets. The plot was totally uninspired, poorly written, filled with plot holes, lacked the heart and soul of Pixar’s other movies, a racing subplot that ended up being pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things and was only in the film to pad out the runtime, and worst of all, Mater, an painfully unfunny and annoying comic relief character was the main protagonist of this movie. The only positive quality of the second film was the animation, which was good. That just goes to show how terrible of a movie Cars 2 was when the only good thing is the quality of the animation.
