    I think my biggest problem with Cars 2 was that it only mentions Paul Newman’s passing with a passing glance like “Oh yeah Doc’s dead. "what are the odds that McQueen ended up in the same town where the Hudson hornet is hiding" an old friend of mine used to combat arguments like that with "well if things like that didnt happen to the main character, the movie wouldnt be about them, would it?"

    • @paperluigi6132
      @paperluigi6132 4 месяца назад +69

      90% of stories are built around fate and coincidences leading the main character to either the setting or meeting a certain character, and in most cases both at once. Some pieces of media even do some “What If” scenarios about what would happen if things had gone differently.

    • @RancorSnp
      @RancorSnp Месяц назад +5

      Precisely. While plot convenience in writing is real, and sometimes can be a detriment to the story. The "what are the odds x happened for the movie to take place" are the most nothing argument people can come up with. The quote your friend used is absolutely perfect, you could also point out that if the odds of this something happening weren't low - there wouldn't be a need to make a movie about it. Not to mention - just because something has low odds, doesn't mean that it can't happen. There isn't an adult person alive on this planet that didn't experience at least one event in their lives that was so unlikely they have never expected it to happen

    • @speedscampi5217

      @@RancorSnp I think there’s a line to it also, for example Star Wars the last Jedi where a ship hits a one in a million chance to blast through the star destroyer saving the alliance. This event breaks Star Wars which is why in the next movie they tried to add the line that it’s “one in a million”. This event along with many others in the trilogy break Star Wars. It’s ok to suspend disbelief as long as what your suspending does not fundamentally alter the universe

      As I think about it, LEGO Movies have a similar plot idea (A nothing nobody got dragged to a very important mission by a professional) but they have a better way of dealing with it, as the Master builder immediately recognized Emmet was nobody, it just so happens he got attached to the rare artifact to save their world, so they don't have a choice but to bring him, as the movie goes on, Emmet actually helped the plot moving and actually help them get closer to save the universe, and in the end when Emmet finally becomes master builder and actually safe the world is so satisfying.

    I don't get how you can ignore the massive plot problems in Cars 3:
    1. Cruz, like McQueen, should be physically inferior to the new-gen racecars, given the fact that she's not a racecar - she's a sportscar.
    2. It makes no sense that you can substitute one athlete for another halfway through a race. This is just not a believable plot point.
    Bonus flaw: Cruz mirrors Anakin in the Phantom Menace: a tagalong that ends up in the climax somehow and doesn't actually deserve to be an 'equal' to the other characters. Out of place, annoying, show-stealing.

    Okay, so I'm just now imagining a version of Cars 2 where it's more along the lines of 1, and focuses mostly on Lightning. It would still have the breakup between Mater and Lightning, and Mater would be missing for most of it.
    But occasionally, Lightning or one of the characters would ask "Huh, I wonder what Mater's up to?" and it cuts to him in some high-action spy thriller stuff, like him defusing a bomb or making a big escape from armed goons.
    The race has no conspiraxy, there's plenty of actually good writing throughout, and at the very end, there's Mater covered in black soot, and has an optional thousand yard stare. Lightning asks "Whoah, you look like a bomb exploded in your face. What happened to you?" And Mater, unusually quiet, just says "You don't want to know."
    Like, seriously, just imagine Larry the Cable Guy saying something like "Why didn't you evacuate the orphanage!?" while Mater is defusing a bomb is making me laugh rn.

    I will always defend Cars 1 and 3; my family has a connection to this franchise, as my Dad collects and manages classic cars, Hudsons being his favorite since he grew up with them. Back when Cars 1 was in theaters, my dad made a whole family event out of seeing it: family came over from across the country, we rode in Hudson Hornets to the theater, and we had a fun time watching the movie, and my dad loved all the actual parallels to racing history and Route 66 in the film. And Cars 3 continues on that ethos. It's about coming to terms with your own mortality and helping the next generation find their way. As for Cars 2... the issues it has and the questions it raises irreparably damaged the franchise, and Planes was just a soulless attempt to cash in on the franchise, but even then, those movies have good things going for them.

    32:45 - 33:28 The lemons’ plan B always made sense to me because it’s a backup. In their mind the chances of their main plan failing would be second to none. McQueen said, on live television, that he would use Allinol during the London race because he believed it was safe after Filmore checked it. The lemons had no reason to believe he would not use Allinol, nor that their plan would fail. When it does, Professor Z freaks out and tells Grem to transition to their backup plan. If you watch the scene at the pits closely, Mater is parked right next to a tank of Allinol. When McQueen shows up right in front of him, Professor Z tries to activate the bomb while all three are in close proximity to each other. When Mater suddenly runs off, Zundapp is caught off guard again. But while McQueen is chasing him and gaining, he realizes he can still make the plan work and tries again when McQueen is inches behind Mater. But it turns out they were now out of range. Making Mater blow up out on the track wasn’t the original plan B. He was supposed to explode in the pits while McQueen and the fuel were in close proximity. The explosion would have likely destroyed most of the evidence of the bomb, and most people would have concluded that it was the fuel that caused it based on the previous accidents. It wasn’t the most foolproof plan but the lemons didn’t think it had to have been. If their A plan worked out the bomb would have just added to the perceived danger of Allinol, along with the removal of a potential threat (Mater).

    • @TheDr502
      @TheDr502 9 месяцев назад +21

      Just to add onto this sage point about Cars' character designs, I love how they placed the cars' eyes in their windshields. I recall reading some complaints about Pixar placing the cars' eyes in their windshields, claiming that their eyes should've been in their headlights. Placing their eyes in their headlights would've made the characters' eyes too small, like they're squinting. They therefore would've looked lifeless, creepy, and expressionless, possibly even snake-like or reptilian.
      By placing the eyes in the windshields, the cars' eyes are more anthropomorphic. Their eyes are much bigger and sillier. Thus, Pixar was able to make the vehicles look friendlier, funnier, cutesier, more cuddly, more expressive, and most importantly, more sympathetic. Clearly, it worked, given that Disney/Pixar have earned $20 billion+ from Cars movies and ancillary markets. Cars isn't quite 20 years old yet, but it's made close to what Star Wars has earned, despite Star Wars being a good 20+ years older. The series has earned about as much as other popular franchises such as Mario or DBZ.
      Whether you're watching animated content from Japan, Canada, the US, or France, cartoon characters tend to have large eyes because large eyes make them funnier and more expressive. Big windshield eyes worked great in other animated car shorts like One Cab's Family and Susie the Blue Coupe. It's a common design philosophy that, for good reason, has endured since the days of Felix the Cat and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

      There's also no reason for lightning to have trouble with repaving the road, he would simply get out of his race car, get into a better suited vehicle, and pave the road.

    I like the ending we got for 3. mcqueens point was that he didn't want to be TOLD he was done, the most satisfying and less cliche way to wrap that idea up is for him to CHOOSE to step away from being a racer. having him win against all odds in this case would be something done purely for the excitement of it rather than the thing that just makes sense. it works as a "starting from the bottom" underdog story, not quite as much for an "I've been AT the top until now" one unless you simply want to see the main character win.

As you said, the point of it was the cycle Doc went into and then McQueen did, but learning from what Doc passed trough, as he left his friends and all the world of racing for years until he met McQueen, then he could avoid all of that, choose when to quit and also giving a young racer the opportunity he once had and did not realize what big of a deal it was, simply perfect

But I think the problem is (and I could be wrong here) that we never actually got to see him cross that finish line himself for the gold. I mean I know technically he also won in the 3rd race for example but it was on technicality not because he crossed the line himself. I mean they show races in between were he wins races like in the 2nd movie and the beginning of the 3rd but never when it was the “big one” for the story. It just kinda felt under whelming to me, like when a team wins a championship on a technical error from a referee making a bad call or something of that sort. I mean sure he was getting old but first movie showed that you could still be competitive despite not being as young as everyone else in characters like the the King and Chick they were obviously from much older generation then McQueen but that didn’t stop them from being competitive. I think, Cars 2 could be reworked pretty nicely, so Mator wouldn't end up annoying. They could have showed him from a different side, like Dori, just like you said. Also no this darn mistake with a spy, because he and Mator don't look remotely the same, they're even different car models! The spy is a small compact car and Mator is a darn tow truck. It would be better this way:
    Main villians - guys hired by McQueen's rival (Chick, for example), to take McQueen out of the Grandprix race. You know, racing is competitive sport, and where is competition, there's always people who are ready to play unfairly (for example, boosting themselves with different substances or removing strongest opponents by setting up injuries). These guys meet McQueen and Mator at the hotel they were booked in, and introduce themselves as hotel staff. Once they settle in, Mator goes off to chat with other hotel guests and explore the hotel itself, when he gets into the "staff only room" (curiosity, the sign doesn't stop him, something like: "just for a sec, they won't see me.") And he accidentally overhears the conversation of the hired guys, when they talk about purposely injuring McQueen right before the race. And this can show Mator from a different side - as a not very smart, but genuinely caring friend, who just leaves everything to protect McQueen from the danger, while not stressing out his friend as well (because he's already stressed out with nearing race and some other conflicts). It has place for cute and serious moments, and can show a comic-relief character from a more serious side.

Happiness and Cyanide even took a swing at it. Cars decided to make the characters cars because it makes the movie stand out. Not only does it make the movie recognizable and stand out, but it humanizes something that isn’t even alive. That takes a lot of creativity and imagination to flesh out nonliving machines and create a very simple and human film. We understand the plot and it is realistic enough to buy it. The characters are likable, realistic, and designed well enough for marketability and popularity. No really mentions these aspects of movies and the creative intent behind them. Sometimes we need to take a step back and put ourselves on how someone could tackle something so nonsensical like talking cars and make it into a movie.

Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Joey Logano, even Dale Earnhardt, sr., they all have/had tendencies to take out other drivers. And up until last year, none of them were penalised. I rewatched it again recently and I realized the empty feeling was just the bittersweet feeling the movie is intending to make you feel. It isn't just a cinematically awesome story of McQueen defying time and beating storm, its kinda just real. Eventually there is going to be someone better than you at what you love, and its best to live life on your terms. A huge theme was McQueen not wanting to go out like Doc, where he lost the chance to end his career on his terms due to tragedy/ being forced to retire to preserve his brand like Sterling wanted. McQueen still got what he wanted in the end, he went out on his own terms and gave Cruz a chance to live her dream. As the viewer, of course you just want to see McQueen comeback and dust Storm, but I think the movie ended up having a better message by McQueen realizing his time was coming and ended his career in a way Doc did not get the chance to. To answer 18:37 *"Why did Sally not go to Los Angeles at the end?."* It was probably for the best she didn't so as to not be a visual distraction for Lightning during the race. Knowing how close they'd become by the end of the film, him daydreaming of her basically proved that. Plus there still needed to be somebody to stay and manage the town to take care of things.

    I watched Cars 3 for the first time, literally last night, and I gotta say, out of the 3 endings you talked about, They definitely chose the best ending. It was a perfect wrap-up of the character of Lightning, He went from a one man team, I can do anything myself, to a student, to a champion, and then moved on to be a teacher.. And I LOVED That for him.. Did not like him taking on Docs colours and name though.. it was a little too "Hey look, he's acting like what his mentor was for him".. but I guess its a kids movie after all

    Hairpin = A hairpin turn (also hairpin bend, hairpin corner, or just hairpin), is a very tight corner. It makes a vehicle turn almost 180° to continue on the road. It gets its name from the way it looks like a hairpin or bobby pin. Hairpin turns may be called switchbacks in American English.

    19:18 This is very easily explained by the mere fact that this is a NASCAR movie. This is a movie about stock car racing car. Thats why the name of the championship throphy is named the Piston Cup, because it's a tribute to the NASCAR's Cup Series and the infamous Winston Cup. The reason Chick Hicks never get's disqualified for "wrecking" the other cars is because in the stock car racing bumping, charging and flat out wrecking the other drivers is a very prominent technique because of the nature of the sport and the restrictor plates limiting the cars top speed leveling the playing field and making it more aking to racing at 200 miles per hour in the middle of a NYC traffic.
    "If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'" - Junior Johnson, "Rule number one of stock car racing learn how to wreck someone without wrecking yourself" - Landon Cassil after surviving an attempted wreck by Danica Patrick who wrecked herself in the process. These are the two quotes that best describe this sport.
    Matter of fact, the whole character of Hicks is an homage to the legendary stock car racer Dale Earnhardt a driver infamous for dishing out self-righteous acts of revenge (wrecking other drivers or intentionaly loosing just to piss somebody off) on the track. His nickname was afterall "The intimidator" Drivers would get sweaty hands when seeing Dale in their rear view mirror. The mustache of Hicks is a direct reference to Dale and his mustache

    I think cars 2 would have benefited severely from being a spinoff movie, with a lack of mater, but just a spy movie in the cars universe. As explained in this video, it doesn't really work as a sequel because it doesn't explore any relative themes to the first movie, but as a spinoff, it would have been given some freedom to be different, with different expectations.

      @@1685ViolinIt's mostly that it doesn't fit thematically, and undermining the intelligence of spies. Very minor issues that could be easily fixed by switching the A and B plot and changing Mater's motives for the spy stuff. There is also the universe breaking stuff but that is only if you focus too much on smaller details, not a problem for most studios but this is Pixar, known for attention to detail.
      All of this was explained in the video btw.

    When this movie came out when I was 13 it was pure nostalgia!! I couldn’t get a ticket for two weeks two see it.. when I finally saw it I balled like a baby.. I grew up racing figure 8’s out at an asphalt track called Colorado national speedway in Eerie, CO.. won the local circuit championship twice before I had a bad wreck and dislocated my elbow and broke 7 ribs.. I was out for months.. My car was a Dodge Neon chassis with a 5.2 liter ford made v8 powering the car itself with multiple different specs I would rather not speak of.. I loved racing, one of the best times of my life!! That’s why cars is such an important movie to me.. the scene where radiator springs gets passed up by the major interstate gets me in my feelings every time I see it ❤❤😢😢 there’s multiple small towns along I 25 in Colorado that just get passed upon and looked at as “meth towns” because Colorado has such a bad problem with crystal meth addiction, but in actual reality you can find some of the sweetest and most heartfelt people in these little towns!! It’s sad that people don’t give them a chance

    Something that irks me is that Pixar had created a wonderful series of short sequel stories in the form of three Cars videogames, where we play as Mcqueen and watch him grow up to the peak of his career.
    The first one, simply titled "Cars", takes place directly after the first movie, Mcqueen enters the next season of Piston cup races, and we watch him practice for each of the five major races. Chick watches him from the sidelines, and even hires the Tuners to sabotage Mac and steal his stuff, but Mcqueen pulls through and wins his first piston cup.
    Game 2: Maternational Championship. Mcqueen's exploits have been gathering the attention of some international racers. While a new racing facility and speedway are being built in Radiator springs, a Ferrari named Giovanni, a fan of Lightning and whom Luigi and Guido gush over, comes to race on the speedway once its construction is finished.
    Race-o-rama, the third game, shows Lightning has taken up the role as a part-time racing coach at the Doc Hudson racing Academy. However, Chick and his own students attempt to sabotage the Race-o-rama tournament and the Academy. Interestingly enough, here we see lightning get modified into a sports car, an off-roader, a muscle car, even a shape that rivals Jackson Storm, who doesn't even exist in this series. Chick even gets that latter upgrade.
    (Comments can help me validate the plots of these three games, just in case)
    These games are enjoyed by many fans, myself included, and yet Pixar threw them all into the "not cannon" bin in favor of a spy thriller. Think of that!

    Fun fact:
    In the German Dub Lightning McQueen is dubbed by Daniel Brühl and The King is dubbed by Niki Lauda, an Austrian F1 legend.
    Daniel plays Niki in the 2013 film 'Rush', which recounts Niki's rivalry with James Hunt and includes a scene recreating Niki's 1976 German grand prix accident, a horrific fireball crash.
    So overall, that end scene is literally the guy who later played Niki voicing a character who pushes a character voiced by Niki across the line.
    Also Mika Häkkinen makes a cameo instead of Mario Andretti and Michael Schumacher, of course, revises his role as he also does for the Italian dub, which makes sense since Michael won so much with Ferrari in f1.
    Ps. I literally grew up with the uk dub and my German compression is crap, but I understood enough to sit through however long the first cars film is while understanding only odd words or phrases.
