    A quote from Gira himself:
"If I recall correctly, we played this in one take (split into 2 sections) and the vocals were recorded live in the room w the band (not in a booth - kudos to John Congelton for accomplishing that recording). Then numerous overdubs, of course. The horse, for instance, sadly, was not live in the studio, though that was the original intent, but I was remonstrated and reminded that a horse is a beast and would not necessarily take kindly to being in a room as we performed this music at full volume and would likely go insane and destroy everything in the studio, including us…”

You've reacted to more Swans than anybody on RUclips (at least that I've seen)... You're the man. Truly.
Edit: somehow I heard "She Loves Us" (the next track) before the rest of the album... for me, that was an eureka moment.

You’re absolutely right in your intuition that the band jams a lot. Particularly with this iteration of Swans (reformed after a long hiatus), live shows are more or less jam sessions where jams slowly evolve into composed works, which is what you find on their studio albums. The interesting thing is that they even keep jamming in future performances on top of previously composed songs to make different songs. For instance, this song started out as The Seer (the eponymous track of their 2012 album), morphed into Bring The Sun/Toussaint L’ouverture here, and finalized as the title track of The Glowing Man. And Gira does indeed tend to vocalize along with the movements of the music as he develops lyrics.
Edit: In my view, this song is simply about what it sounds like on the tin. I think the first part is some kind of sun worship (Gira is known for singing about the sun) and the second part is about the Haitian Revolution.
However, what I think is a powerful concept is the juxtaposition of the two things, and I think this is why they are placed together as a single song. In my view, this album deals with themes of cosmic events but then ascribes seemingly equal relevance to things of almost microscopic insignificance in comparison. The blinding power and perfection of the sun and the ugly, petty bloodshed of humanity. This album seeks to find the transcendent in the smallest facets of life. Other tracks choose one or the other (usually contemplating on the mundane in a mindbogglingly awe-filled way, like how simple breath is passionately exalted on Oxygen), but this track, fittingly the centerpiece of the album, presents that marriage in a different way. This is also reflected in the structure of the two halves. Bring The Sun powerfully marches toward its conclusion, never faltering and always increasing in magnitude. Terrifying order. Toussaint L’ouverture is sporadic, a wild collage of samples, violent stabs of instrumentation, and colossal waves of white noise. Unstable chaos.

That's cool that it's more of a jam then just something that's been done over and over again. It gives the same song a new life and a new experience everytime. It's actually genius in a way. The more I dive into the Swans rabbit hole, the more interesting thing I learn about them thanks to people such as yourself. Thank you for the thoughtful and detailed comments to these reaction videos. It doesn't get unnoticed and it's really appreciated. I'll do some more soon 💪

🤩 taking a break from FL... HERE WE GO!
I know nothing about playing... but watching them live shows the endurance some of these songs demand from the player.

Stuck it out to the end! It's a slog of a song, I won't lie -- was a very intimidating and difficult album my first SEVERAL listens. Like others have said, this opened up a world of experimental music to me that I had never considered; Orchestral rock bands like Silver Mt. Zion/Godspeed You! Black Emperor, This Will Destroy You and even artists like Chelsea Wolfe and Lingua Ignota became so much more accessible to me after hearing this. Swans is no longer my favorite artist in this milieu, but they hold a special place in unlocking that door for me.
As for this song, I do hear it as a soundscape of the Haitian independence, as surface-level as that may be. When I close my eyes, you hear the fervor of "Bring the Sun" building -- the heartfire of revolution stirring. Then you hear the pastoral sounds of horses, hammers, wheels on stone, before the cacophonous breakdown into the Toussaint section. A masterclass in blending slow, surgical progressions into ear-beatingly aggressive climaxes. And totally, totally exhausting to listen to, lol, but in the best way possible.
Thanks for your time in listening to this, it's always fun to see someone experience something this odd for the first time.

Thank you so much for sticking around! Yeah this song is exhausting in a way but it's very interesting (if you have the patience). I'm in the same boat as you as Swans is opening up a doorway to other bands that I am not familiar with. I love that though. Thanks for mentioning those other bands! I've been wanting to react to other bands that are less known and are interesting like Swans and you gave me some to start with.
Thanks again for sticking around and I plan on doing more content soon!

@@frankieseymour3324 I can't recommend Lingua Ignota enough - she is a CHALLENGING listen, but it's impossible not to swell with emotion hearing her. She taps so deeply into primal emotions, and brings them out in majestic and often very uncomfortable, jarring ways. She's an artist who has changed how I think about music completely - her latest album, Sinner Get Ready, is stunning.
